"Fluent" as, can reasonably speak and write the language with native speakers

I've been considering learning a second language for a few years now, but never made the plunge. Back in k-12 I took German and Hebrew but have very little memory of either one, besides knowing how to read them and pronounce things.

Last week I started Mandarin Chinese on duo lingo on a whim, but it's honestly really exciting to be learning things again and I'm considering buying a book to help me learn to write basic words. I'm wondering if anyone else has done something similar? What has b8's experiences with learning new languages been?

Why would you combine 2 and 3 in one option? What a shameful poll.

Just English.

I went about halfway into learning French in high school and a little after before falling off. I started learning Japanese at the start of the year but idled on it through the summer before picking it back up. The time I spend on it is very irregular, which I know isn't a great practice.

Just English. I studied German (high school) and Japanese a substantial amount, but not enough.

My native language is English. I've tried my hand at other languages, but I've never used them enough to achieve fluency.
