https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/3-poll-of-the-day/79133963

thread asks for people's reactions to cars when crossing the street.

several people reply that the question doesn't apply to them because apparently they haven't been a pedestrian or been anywhere that required the use of a crosswalk to get anywhere in their adult lives

live very rural, adjacent to a small town? have to drive everywhere, but shopping strips are all self-contained.

this is pretty close to my existence. though there is a small bit of "downtown" that has stores that require walking from a centralized lot. but i can definitely see people who only ever go to the big box stores.

but never in 10+ years? it's one thing if your area only has big box stores so you only go from parking lot to parking lot for your everyday life stuff, but to literally have never been in an area where people walk streets and use crosswalks in 10 years?

I don't buy that at all. you've literally never been anywhere and needed/wanted to go across the street on foot? never parked across the street from your destination? never parked a block or two away from your destination (someone's house, a shop, restaurant, school, work, church, court, post office, sports arena, concert, plaza, park, etc etc etc) and needed to cross a street or two?

have you never travelled in your life?

are these people doing something you've never done in your life?

is this whole experience alien to you?

you've never once gone from one side of a street like this to another like this:
or this
or this

I just live in a rural town where you just drive to a place, park in their parking lot, then leave. Nothing in my life has ever been so crowded here that I have had to park somewhere and THEN walk. You just basically park your ass right outside the door and walk in. And I sure as shit don't see anyone else walking along these roads either so I am pretty sure they are never going to give a fuck about a crosswalk.

Yeah, I've lived in the middle of nowhere my entire life. Pretty sure the only time I've ever used a crosswalk is on field trips to the city when I was a kid and a few years ago when I couldn't get ahold of my ride and had to walk to a phone.

Most of the places I go don't even have sidewalks because the main road in my town is basically the highway.

Anyway, I don't think I've used a crosswalk in 15 years and it still feels foreign to me. I live in a rural area about 5 miles from a small town. There are crosswalks but no one really uses them and they just jaywalk. Nobody really cares.

I'm also pretty sure those crosswalk buttons don't do jack shit. Like the close door button on an elevator.

Those areas exist in Houston but to stores I don't go to usually small businesses. When I have to go to several stores I just go to the mall or as other people have said I drive to the other store. That pic you showed is really uncommon to find stores like that here at least with stores you would visit being next or close to each other.

This looks like a small town or how time square is set up. We don't have that in Houston unless you live in downtown or close to a college/university.

Where are you from TC?

When I was working in Nashville, sometimes I would work at a State of Tennessee building. There were a bunch of restaurants around there, only about a 10 minute walk away, but absolutely 0 sidewalk like they expect everyone to drive. I would walk anyways most times, because fuck getting an uber for what's a 2 minute ride.

That's a large city, so I absolutely believe there are people who have never had to be pedestrians before, especially living out in the boonies.

Yeah, but nashville and houston are just as bad or maybe worse than most small cities in this regard. Small town infrastructure is usually older, it was built when density was assumed and probably had sidewalks that have since disintegrated. Nashville and houston are creatures of pure car oriented development, the urban highways there are insane

Right, but my point is that people out in the boonies (like Nashville and Houston were before the population boom) might have never even seen a sidewalk before.
