I'm enjoying it, but man these levels are long. I'm only three levels in, but the first took about an hour, the second took about 90 minutes, and the third took two whole hours. Even accounting for deaths these are taking a really long time. In the 2016 game the first few levels were about 20-30 minutes and the really long ones were about an hour.

Is this just me? Do they get shorter? Because if they don't that's something else for a FPS campaign, and it might drag.

I feel the combat so far has lived up to 2016 but the pacing is putting it a bit below for me so far. Still can't wait to play some more though!

I actually enjoyed the longer levels since they were a lot better designed than Doom '16, much more detailed and varied with gorgeous backdrops.

Thats kind of my thoughts on it. The grappling fit in perfectly so the combat didn't miss a beat, but by the end I was just waiting for it to be over. I think if they had trimmed a few hours off of it I would have enjoyed it more.

(Still a great game)

The levels don't really get shorter. Hell, towards the end you "finish" Nekravol and then you go to...Nekravol part 2. It's frustrating when the levels just keep going and throwing harder encounters at you but it's definitely satisfying to finally beat them.

Eternal is so much better than DOOM. The change in how the ammo system works really encourages you to go all out and not hold back making combat way more fun and not feel like just another FPS on the market. Exposing enemy weaknesses, better boss battles and the levels being more aesthetically pleasing is just a bonus to how much that change makes the sequel far superior.

I'm not even that good at FPSes but playing DOOM Eternal on its normal difficulty made me feel like an FPS God and not because it was not challenging but because it was so well designed.

I also just started up Doom Eternal. I don't really mind the levels being longer? At least according to How Long to Beat, it looks only a teeny bit longer than Doom 2016, and overall length is more important to me. After AC: Odyssey, the brevity of Doom Eternal (and Jedi Fallen Order before that) is a relief.

Doom 2016 felt more pure if that makes sense but I think eternal is the better game. If you replay the levels they feel much shorter now that youre familiar with them.

I know I say this every time the game comes up, but I just need someone to explain to me why the change grenade type button exists and isnt just a shoot ice grenade button since there are only two grenade types

We get used to associating a button to a specific action, in this case "throw grenade". It's easier for us to differentiate between "switch grenade" and "throw grenade" than between two "throw grenade" buttons.

Two throw grenade buttons would've been much better yeah. Definitely a failure in game design.

One of the bigger mistakes of Doom Eternal was the story. It gets way more focus than Doom 2016's story, but it's much worse. Takes itself way too seriously, as opposed to 2016's story, which was hilarious.

I will say the storytelling in Eternal so far feels like somebody at Id lost an argument after 2016. Doom 2016 felt like the perfect balance of the amount of story and the juxtaposition of serious lore and absurdity, sort of a great compromise between two styles, while Eternal heavily slants it in the serious direction.

The title card for Doom 2016 was an absolutely glorious moment when you knew the story was in good hands. This doesnt really have that.

Okay, I finished the sixth level. I think Im getting more into it. The levels are still really long (though nothing approaching Exultia!) but Im getting into the flow of both the combat and the exploration so Im either moving quicker of not feeling the length. Also that guy you fight was not as bad as the complaints Id heard.

I also just beat level 6 - the boss was rough but I managed to beat him due to my two extra lives.

I couldn't beat the first slayer gate challenge and am dreading going back through an entire level just to try again (I beat those that followed on my first try thanks to extra lives and the chain gun shield)

I kind of hate the way extra lives work in games like this. I couldn't imagine a worse feeling than if I failed that boss fight, only to have to start again with a single life. It's weird that I'd feel better without the temporary benefits, but it adds an extra stressor to each fight knowing my next attempt would be even harder.

A lot of complaints about that guy seem to come from people who, in increasing order of inability to game: 1) Never weapon swap 2) Stand still to try to bait out the attack (instead of backpedaling and waiting for the dude to run at you) 3) want to use their favorite weapon, which turns out to be something like the plasma rifle or chain gun.

Also if you're not on nightmare on the first run, I highly recommend at least looking at the game on nightmare after, even if it's just a master level or one of the earlier levels with all of your current unlocks. I also personally like rebinding the weapon swap keys so that everything after 5 is something much closer to WASD (Q is super shotgun, E is Ballista and X is chain gun atm for example, with melee swapped to F because of 2016 muscle memory).
