I remember my first time through Totorak I watched the cutscene and by the time it was over the other three had killed the boss and left.

The queue ended up taking about 14 minutes, and I love how you can go and do whatever you want still while queuing.

Yeah people will often leave immediately at the end if they don't need anything that the boss dropped. I'll usually stick around for comms.

I ended up with new ear cuffs and something else new that I forget already. Also got a staff that Ill likely never use. Should I hold on to it for if I level up another class later on?

You can hold onto stuff now if you want, but you'll eventually run out of armory chest space. Dungeon-quality gear is easy to get, so don't feel bad about getting rid of stuff that you might eventually use.

(One exception is that you might want to hold onto gear that you think looks particularly cool; you can put this in a glamour dresser if you just want it for the appearance).

FF14's fanbase is shockingly positive for an MMO so don't be afraid to say you're new or ask for advice if necessary. Generally you'll be able to learn dungeon bosses on-the-fly without too much trouble though, at least once you start recognizing the general patterns and icons bosses use.

probably half due to someone accidentally pulling the boss

when you step into the arena, everyone nearby gets sucked in and you get aggro'd by the boss, unlike most other boss fights

Ended up doing the quest for the Tam-Tara Deepcroft shortly after. One of the DPSs had to leave because I gotta eat, like a couple minutes into the dungeon. Thankfully it wasnt the tank or healer, and we did fine with just 3. I even got a commendation lol. Tank was super chill, especially because I didnt realize the stupid imp was behind me, so the mind flayer boss dude was invulnerable for longer than he shouldve been. But the dude just calmly said to focus the imp, I found him, the rest was easy.

Tried to add the dude as a friend later, but it said his name didnt exist. Was he from another data centre?

Did Copperbell Mines, was pretty seamless. Now a level 27 archer, member of the scions, and doing quests out in the desert. Just learned about materia also

Don't worry about materia for now. That's more for endgame stuff.

While true that you dont need it, if you happen to get some materia (such as whatever you get from extraction from spiritbonded items) Id definitely use it since you can now remove it from equipment for free (except for level 80 stuff where theres a chance of failure)

Did the level 25 archer quest, that took an interesting turn. Though I had guessed that Silvaire was the sentry he had himself talked about earlier. Brought the cat girl back to the guild, and now can't do the next one until level 30.

So how does getting Materia work? Do you just use a particular piece of equipment a lot until a piece pops out?

I need to make a materia-enhanced lance for the next carpenter quest, and as far as I can tell the game has done a shit job of explaining anything materia-related.

The easiest way to get materia is from the market board, assuming you're not on the free trial. It's very cheap.

pretty much, just keep fighting. every now and then glance at your equipment slot overview here:

if any are white, they have 100% spiritbond. right click the gear and select convert; used to be this would destroy the gear, but now it just sets it at 1% spiritbond again

buy a cheapass one off the marketboard, everything that isn't level 70+ or crafting should be EXTREMELY cheap

Sadly, I am on the trial so the market board isn't an option. I wish XIV would go to a more normal subscription-optional model where I can pay for some features (like market board access and the expansions) without having to subscribe, but they've gone for this weird setup where it's completely free or continual-payments-or-nothing, and I refuse to do the latter, so...

so after fumbling through captchas trying to guess my password until it locked me out for a bit, going through the reasonable permutations for my security answers and trying them on every question, and trying to channel the me of 7 years ago to see if there was a meme/style at the time answer, i made one last guess at the password using the most basic one used for everything back then and of course that was it because :/

so now the question is can i do the heavensward stuff without renewing subscription or is that like only in a special free trial thing thats separate

So I just did my first primal fight last night, and that was a pretty fun experience. Hellfire was definitely as cool of an attack as it should be, for how iconic it is. Definitely a fun fight.

Chose the Twin Adders as my GC for the time being, and I also got randomly invited to an FC. So that was cool

Won't read the spoiler, but I assume it's referring to another primal fight down the road.

I also assume most of the regular FF summons are in this game? Bahamut was already referenced (the calamity), Ifrit, Ramuh has been talked about as the primal of the sylphs, Titan the primal of the kobolds, and Leviathan the primal of the sahagin. Garuda has been mentioned, but most Garuda's I remember are regular bird like enemies (or a boss in FF12). I assume Shiva will be later, as well as maybe some others like Alexander.

Took out Pawah for the archer quest, and now it looks like I'm gonna become a bard? Should I basically switch to that right away when it's offered?

Ended up dying once (first time ever) in Toto-Rak because I got caught when the web re-materialized, and 3 of those ochu-like things murdered me. Also, long cutscene before the boss fight, so when it finished, the boss had 1/3 of its health left lol.

Still, having a great time, and getting through a bunch of quests. Added fisher, carpenter, and alchemist to my jobs, but still mostly focusing on my bard currently, so as to keep advancing!

As someone with every job/class at max level and every quest in the game completed, enjoy this journey. I wish I could do it again. It's been great reading though, don't stop!

Yeah I've basically turned this into a playthrough topic I guess haha. Especially with so many people having done all current content, and me still on the base game, with 3 expansions to go afterwards!

I've just hit the part where I have to do a multi-player raid to proceed with the story. And I remain very non-enthusiastic about actually doing multiplayer.

I've heard it's possible to go into a raid on your own, and thanks to the current XP boosts I'm about 10 levels above the quest's level, but is soloing it (Satasha, or something like that) actually doable?

Not likely.

You don't even have to interact with people if you don't want to. You can treat them like npcs.

Yeah, you'll just have to get used to doing it. Interaction can be basically nonexistent.

Yeah, you just open the duty finder and queue for it, it'll automatically match you with 3 other players, you don't even need to say hi to them, and the dungeon is easy enough that nothing can go wrong. Just make sure to keep an eye on chat in case the other players tell you something important. (i.e. "hey, don't attack this boss while it's tail is up" or etc)
