91 years old. She had such an amazing life. 6 kids, 14 grandkids, 13 great grandkids (number 14 on the way). Built an entire legacy by investing all of my grandpas money in properties in her home country and running everything herself. An amazing achievement for a woman in the Middle East of that time, especially with no formal education of her own. She was that grandma who insisted on cooking nonstop and cleaning for you even though she had a hip replacement and refused to ever sit down no matter how much you told her to stop. She paid tuition for 3 of my cousins when their parents had financial issues. We all saw her as the head of our family and jokingly called her the don. She cared about every single of one us.

My mom suffered from severe mental health issues after her and my dad divorced. It resulted in her being verbally and physically abusive with my sister and I (mostly with me). My grandma came to stay with us for a few years and she literally would protect us from my mom and get her to cut that shit out. She stood up for us every time she could and was more motherly towards us than our mom.

Her health was really strong for her age until she started suffering from dementia these last few months. She wasnt herself anymore and its been a long struggle. I miss her terribly but Im glad shes no longer suffering. RIP grandma.

Sorry, man.

Good that you got to share time with her. I didn't get to know my own grandparents that well.

I'm sorry man. Her story is very inspiring. I do think an important key to a long life is to stay busy and have hobbies. She reminds me of my mom.

I hopes she rests easy. She lived one heck of a life.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. It's a terrible time. I just lost both of my grandparents to dementia over the last 6 weeks. My mother isn't doing well losing both her parents back to back. I hope you fair well losing such an important person in your life.

I'm sending out as much love and powerful energy as I can your way. Family is everything.

I'm very sorry for your loss. My grandma passed away earlier this week. She was 89, and we don't know how she died, but we think it might have been an aneurysm, because she was fine at 10am Sunday morning, but was dead by noon.

I told my drinkin buddies tonight that my wife's grandfather had his health drastically decline in the last 3 days, he's also 91. We don't expect him to live though the weekend, one of the best men I have met. I feel for your loss, and anticipate our own in the coming days. The man has preached for 71 years, and did continue to do so in video chat last Sunday. He consistently kicked my ass in chess, after 100+ games I never beat him.

I am so sorry. I was absolutely devastated when my grandma died, she was the only person in my life ever that showed me truly unconditional love. I was shook extremely hard by it. Sorry you're going through it. I wish I could say it gets better, but it's more like you just sort of learn to live with the fact that everything is worse now. Forever.

91 is a good life. Im likely to lose both my parents before they turn 70 (dad dead already), and I never met my moms parents; they died before I was born. Dads parents I met maybe 5 times. I envy people who were close with their grandparents tbh. Sorry for your loss.

Your grandmother sounded incredible. May she rest in peace. If you have kids, I'm sure they would love to vicariously meet her through stories you tell of her.

My grandfathers both died before I was born, one grandmother died when I was 10 and didn't have many interactions with, and my other grandmother had dementia as long as I've know. So I never got the chance to really appreciate having a grandparent, nor did I hear much about them so I am always all ears and ready to listen regarding the relationships and stories (no matter how trivial) of grandparents from my friends.

Thank you everyone. I really appreciate all these posts. And to those who have lost their grandparents too, my heart goes out to you.

I was over at her apartment yesterday with my mom. It needs to be cleared by the end of the month. My husband was a gem who went and bought a bunch of moving boxes, bubble wrap, sharpies etc and helped set them all up for my mom to put my grandmas things away. I got a few things of my grandmas as keepsakes and got to go through all the photo albums she had. So many pictures of all of us that she cherished. Her funeral is next Saturday and shell be buried next to my uncle who passed away last May.

I'm very sorry for your loss.
She sounds like she was awesome.
I'm going through similar with my grandma, who also has dementia and Alzheimer's. She's ok some days, for now.
She has been similarly prominent in the family.
Again, condolences.
