"Friend that is also a good trainer", "clearly wants to suck my nuts", "dork", but Blue was the only one who made me want to beat him. The rest just felt like unfortunate victims in the path of my glory.

hes not, but on a second playthrough of b2 I realized how... non-essential he was. The game even makes fun of him for that in a meta way. Every time team plasma is involved or even when interacting with a gym leader, he starts yelling and proclaiming his intentions of revenge or victory or whatever, and he gets entirely ignored. Hes a character who believes hes the protagonist when really hes just a side character. I also hate that is team is a repeat of Cheren/Bianca, especially when the Unova dex was basically doubled from bw1. Its a shame because I was hyped for him when he was revealed, he has a great cocky+competent rival design but hes very forgettable, and his battle theme is great as well. Its disappointing

Ok list if you move Hau to the the bottom. Though Hugh also belongs close to the top, Barry is slightly too high, Gladion should be higher.

Hugh is so forgettable that this is the first time I'm even hearing about him. I skipped gens 4-6 except for SS, but Pokemon is saturated enough into my circles that I still learn of side characters from those gens. I know the friends, the gym leaders, the weirdo side characters. Hugh? Never seen, never heard.

Are people forgetting Silver, or did everyone just name him ??? and forgot what a piece of shit that dude was? Dude was a pile of shit criminal for 90 % of the GSC story and it took Lance absolutely humiliating him before he started to smarten up.

Silver was good for actual interactions, though often it felt like he was doing his own thing. Also, I remember that he felt significantly easier than Blue. A lot better in the remake, at least.

Barry is a healthy mix of friendly+competitive+competent. Hes got a unique quality of basically being ADHD, hes got a solid team and he gets good development after getting clapped at Lake Acuity.

I wish Hugh was a better rival because I love his design and battle music, and his (postgame) team. But hes irrelevant to the plot. I think that was the point though, to have a rival who thinks hes the main character in his own head. If you havent played BW2 in a while, I reccomend you replay and look at Hugh through the lens of being a comic relief character. It fits surprisingly well.

I like Gladion and think hes everyone below him are the weaker rivals, hes definitely on the good side. I just think everyone above is a bit better.

Hau is great, characters like Gladion and Faba will act all tryhard edgy and badass, and then Hau just comes along and points out how ridiculous they are in the best way possible, and just totally embarrasses them. Ive only played the og S/M and but I hear hes more serious in USUM. Hes basically the Team Skull of rivals, in that hes supposed to point out the absurdity of them. Team Skull itself is the ridiculous team but Hau does it by pointing out the edginess in Gladion, and by being all like huh? I lost. What? You thought Id be mad? Weird expectations bro. Love life

this. Him being overly edgy but also having a terrible team is not a great mix. Also, unlike Blue who brushed off losses, Silver would be like Hmph, I cant believe I lost to a weakling like you!!! I need to get stronger so I can CRUSH you next time!!!! Hes like an annoying fly that just buzzes in at weird times.

that being said I really like Silver, I love his development. One of the best parts of HGSS is post game you talk to Elm and he mentions the Totodile thief and come back to the lab to return the Pokmon, but was told he could keep it, and left with a smile on his face. That and teaming up with him in the Dragons Den postgame. Hes great but a lot of people overhype him because of that character development. Characters can be perfectly good without undergoing huge character changes

You know, my favorite part about Gladion is how often everyone just nonsells his ridiculous poses. Like, you can feel his embarrassment. He's a lot better un USUM, though.

S/M Hau is the one I hate most in the whole series. Not taking yourself seriously at all is just as bad as being too edgy. He doesn't seem to try until it's far too late.

May is way too low.

She deserves much more credit, bumped her above Serena.

Shes basically your senior as a trainer and is excited to show you the ropes, gives you helpful hints, etc. She kind of needs to come to terms that you quickly outpace and eclipse her and just leave her in the dust. Apparently playing as a female, Brendan demonstrates this a lot more prominently by basically not taking you super seriously because youre a girl, and are a novice. He eventually acknowledges your strength and apologizes, and didnt mean to be rude. Theyve got a decent endgame team too. But you really need to dig into the subtext to come up with all that, so that takes away some points. Still, May was my first rival and that battle under Cycling Road is one of the harder fights in Emerald

theres a fan game I saw about that. Not a R**hack but an actual fan game, I dont know the name but it involves a Pokmon tournament. Also, when in bw1 on the route when you and Cheren meet Alder, and Cheren was frustrated over lacking strength, I thought that was the direction they would be taking
