Geno has been in 1 game (well 2, but that was a cameo) and is owned by a company that has shown it doesnt like handing its IPs over to Smash (See Hero and Cloud.)

He actually had a Mii Costume in Smash 4.

It's currently one of four Smash 4 DLC Mii Costumes that have not yet returned in Ultimate (along with Lloyd Irving, the Monster Hunter armor, and the Rathalos armor).

I don't consider it a meme. I think it's a real possibility and a good pick. There a lot of moveset potential.

SMRPG was my first RPG. I have a lot of fond memories of it.

...but Geno has no business being in Smash. You can make the comparative argument with several others who are in the game, but a Mii costume and a Spirit is the most that a single-game character deserves.

• Geno only featured in one game in a major capacity: as a sidekick of Mario's in a nearly-25-year-old game.
• He had a cameo appearance a few years later in Mario & Luigi: Super Star Saga, but the remake of that game removed said cameo.
• Square-Enix has no love for the character or any of the SMRPG cast, bypassing a perfect opportunity to reuse them in the Mario sports and party games that they made.
• Nintendo, being the ones who are actually choosing the DLC Fighters, has no real reason to ask for him. You could say the same about Banjo, since his series have been dead for over a decade, but the Banjo-Kazooie games are fondly-remember classics and some of the top-regarded N64 games; Banjo also headlined those games. Including him also strengthened the relationship between Microsoft and Nintendo, whereas Geno arguably would not do much of the same with Square, especially with two of their biggest names (Cloud and the DQ Hero(es)) already being in, and still other much more popular Square icons to add (such as Sora or someone from the Bravely series).
• Sakurai has mentioned that he's wanted to add Geno since Brawl, but considering the above, he might feel that the Mii Costume is the best he could do again. He did say before that the Mii Gunner was a perfect fit for Geno, after all.

If it happens, I'll accept him and try him out, but I don't see it happening.

Geno does have a leg up due to Sakurai being aware of him, wanting to include him previously, and putting in the Mii costume as a compromise. In terms of gaming scope, hes a nobody, but hes fairly notable in terms of Smash. That the Mii costume hasnt returned could either signal his possible arrival or just a more detailed Mii costume like the last few.

The wrench here is that, as I mentioned, it's Nintendo choosing the DLC, not Sakurai. Neither Nintendo or Square-Enix has shown any interest in Geno, and if it were not for Sakurai, Geno probably wouldn't have any references at all in Smash.

I dont understand the people who use the obscure arguments when theres a handful of obscure and/or retro fighters in Smash.

Paper Mario will probably be added instead. Ryu Hayubasa and Jonesy are other likely candidates.

Geno might get added as a Mii costume. Hopefully it's detailed like the Bomberman costume.

You better keep hoping that Sakurai sticks with the series for as long as he can.

Sakurai seems to be the only person who even acknowledges Geno these days, and while he's given a lot of freedom with Smash (given that he's the original creator), even he is losing control over the series ever since Iwata's passing. Any new director will basically be 100% on Nintendo's leash.
