This topic is inspiring me to maybe go back and beat the final boss. I got stuck on him for a few hours and decided I'd had enough. I can't imagine jumping back in after 6 months and being okay though.

It usually takes me a year to beat these games. I get to the last boss in a week, KNOW its the last boss, and never touch it again because I know there's really nothing to accomplish after. I dont generally play NG+ so I hit the point where I can finish it if I want, but all that ill get is a 10 second cutscene so I just... lose interest. I eventually pick it back up and finish in 30 minutes

Basically if I knew I had 10 hours of DLC after the last boss I would finish it tonight, but the closer I get to the finish line the less I'm interested. I dunno

Continuing on, I kill two treasure carp, a bunch of dogs, a bunch of monks, some geckos, some monkeys, and a couple mini wolverines. I leave the big wolverine dude alone for a little bit because I want to explore. Kill some of the little assassin dudes and more monks. Then I find dudes with fucking centipedes wrapped around them. And inside them? Is that what people are infected with? What in the fuck.

I find some goblet thing, and Im transported to a snowy giant temple area. Oh what the hell, this is a boss? Ohhhhh THIS is the puzzle boss. Gotta find and kill 4 monkeys, while ghost monkeys attack me here and there.

I saw green smoke early, but then lose sight of him. I manage to find an alcove inside where the purple monkey is and take him out. Pure blind luck of exploring. After about 10-15 minutes I find the red one and am able to sneak up on him.

All throughout this, I keep hearing monkey noises no matter where I am. And it finally clicks. One of the monkeys is unseen on the screen, and the monk dude doesnt even talk about him. I equip the spin slash combat art, use it, and dead monkey behind me. Fucker.

Took a little bit longer to then find the green monkey and dispose of him, but thats done. I meet the divine child and get the mortal blade! Awesome.

I go back to the Wolverine dude, who is Long Arm Centipede Sen-un. I take out all the mini ones first, run away to break his aggro, then go back for the stealth kill. I somehow miss a deathblow twice and end up dying. Annoying. I kill him on my second try in like, 6 seconds. All about deflecting his crazy combo, and jumping his sweep.

I go back and give the crazy woman some rice. She mentions that kite. I try to fly it again with no luck. I figured Id try the puppeteer thing on the assassin dude to see if that would work, and he went and did it for me! That was cool.

I use it to fling myself across the area, and find an idol. Then drop and find the sunken valley entrance (I think thats what it was called). Theres a pole that looks out into nothingness, and nothing else. Hmm.

Thats where Ill leave it for the time being!

Yeah Folding Screen Monkeys is the 'puzzle' one. You're SUPPOSED to use things in the environment to kind of set traps for each of them, but honestly I just sprint full speed around the map until I trigger one and then chase it down >_>

Went back to the sunken valley, grappled around some cliffs while gunners I couldnt see took shots at me. Then found a boss at the big cliff I got to.

Holy fuck Snake Eyes Girafuji (sp?) is hard. I dont know if theres a secret or someway to do a death blow, but I had to take both of her health bars in a straight up fight. Her grab tracks you, so that was hard to avoid, and her swings into gun combos were tricky too. Got her after 7 attempts, but man, definitely not easy.

My bad, it was Snake Eyes Shirafuji. I was exhausted last night, so I went to bed after playing, but got a bunch more done.

Made my way through the gun fort, taking out as many snipers as I could. Definitely a bit difficult to navigate, but figured it out eventually and found an idol inside. Went down the stairs and there's another wolverine boss. I'm sorry, his name is Long Arm Centipede Giraffe?! Like............what? Anyway, even though I couldn't get a stealth kill on this one, the story was the same as the last long arm centipede dude, deflect everything, deathblow, repeat, and down he goes.

I run across a bridge and HOLY FUCK GIANT SNAKE!!! It takes out the bridge, though I somehow avoid getting hit by it, and I land in the water. I then avoid getting eaten by the asshole, as I make it into a cave. This cave leads to more open areas, and monkeys everywhere that want me dead. Some of them have swords, because of course they do. This culminates in me looking over a ledge and seeing a group of like, 20 of them. I jump down to deathblow one, then just start swinging everywhere and throwing shurikens. Down they all go.

After more exploring, I find another idol looking over a valley, and a gigantic beast looking thing. Guardian Ape eh? Pissed off that I slaughtered all the other monkeys I bet. I've heard stories about this dude, and I spend a lot of this battle running for my life and getting in hits when able. Dude literally farts in my face, and LITERALLY THROWS HIS OWN SHIT AT ME!! I laughed the first time, since I dodged it, but I saw how much damage it did the second time when it hit me. Suddenly not as funny. Anyway, I manage to cut his head off and down he goes. First try, and only one life bar? Huh, interesting. I drink my last healing gourd, and get a read of my surroundings. Then the ground shakes a bit, so I turn around........................umm excuse me, WHAT IN THE FUCK IS HAPPENING?! The Ape literally is holding its own head in one hand, and the sword in the other. His terror scream takes my first life, and he kills me later as learning his erratic moveset is difficult.

I kill him on my next try, as I basically run around the arena and bait his belly-slide sword swipe move. Down he goes, and ewwwwwwww what the fuck is that centipede inside him?! Another of the infested I guess. After he's REALLY gone, I go back and heal, and that was it for yesterday.

Guardian Ape is great. First time I got through the first form I dropped my controller and cheered, not knowing he was coming back up. To be fair it took me a few more tries because I generally go there immediately after Genichiro so I don't have as many levels as I would if I do the temple first.

Also, he has an attack in the second form where he does two swipes and then does a crashing overhead strike. If you parry it he falls on the floor and you have a good 3 seconds to hit away. It's the strategy I do because it's super easy to bait if you stay on him.

Even better
If you use a certain weapon on him when he falls over, you can pull out the centipede to do extra damage.

Congrats btw, Guardian Ape was a bit tougher for me.

I chalk it up more to running around and getting in little hits when I could. Used mortal draw by accident twice, which took a bunch of spirit emblems, but did good damage. Thanks for the kind words though!! :)

Went back to that higher idol in the sunken valley passage, as I remember the advice to go there after opening the gun Fort. Uhhh, now instead of nothing, when I go to that ledge, the giant serpent is below me. Is a jumping deathblow possible? Lets try it!

I drop from the heavens and murder the snake. Got a couple items down there also, and the giant serpents heart. Huh, interesting. Well, its dead now. Gonna quickly slip over to Hirata estate to sell some treasure carp scales

I used the firecracker in my first attempt, and it definitely worked. Good call!

So I got the second last item from the carp dude (floating passage), just need the last item, so I need 7 carp scales. Got one currently. Dude also wants to be a carp. Thats..........odd.

Went back to see what the guardian ape was actually guarding, and there is the white lotus flower. I show it to Kuro, he says he also found out we need his blood but he cannot bleed. Though the mortal blade could do it. For now, need to find the other stuff.

So uhh, now Im actually not sure where to go.

EDIT: never mind, the lady mentioned (and pointed) at the poison swamp. Its a From game, of COURSE theres a poison swamp area

I recommend holding onto your treasure scales for now, don't spend them all right away

As for where to go, you have a couple ways to get there, but you should go back to the idol before guardian ape. You can make your way down the cliffside into a poison swamp, that will lead to your next destination.

edit: lol nvm but don't worry this poison swamp isn't so bad

Poison swamp not so bad you say?! Maybe the poison itself isnt, but man the other stuff is!!

I start exploring and find a white monkey with two swords. Who proceeds to absolutely shitkick me. I try again, same result. I eventually run away, and am able to deathblow him, but man was that bad. I find the memorial mob but dont have enough for the green gourd. Find a second fucking white monkey, who proceeds to cave my face in. I do the same thing and eventually stealth kill him.

Mob dude mentions a giant snake. I say ha, I killed that fucker! So uhhh, theres a fucking second one. Thankfully the woman above mentioned it eating a monkey, and I find one cowering. Sorry buddy. I puppeteer him, and get in the house temple thing. Second snake heart get.

Im able to grapple outta there (took me a few minutes to find it, so I sliced at the snakes side a few times lol). I think the next place I got to was a giant open poison swamp area with some gunners. Oh fuck me, one is a snake eyes.

So while I was running for my life and killing a couple other gunners, I notice Snake Eyes has lost about a quarter of her health. I grapple up top and see her..........in the swamp. I watch for a few seconds and she gets poisoned. Lol wow. I assume this was the spoiler tag a while back? Yes, I let her poison herself to death, sneaking in the two deathblows. No, Im not proud of it. But with all the shit that Ive been through with From games, Im taking it!!

I find an idol, but also see a cave back down below. I find a dude whos dying. What did it? Big...........ape......... oh fuck me, please no.

I enter the giant cavern and there is the fucking headless guardian ape. I kill him exactly like last time, just baiting the diving attack. Take off a health bar. AND HE GATES IN A FUCKING COMPANION?! Fucking Jesus. I lose a life because I get ganked. But eventually I realize that brown ape is very vulnerable after the swipe he does, and he staggers easy. So I bring him down while avoiding the headless one, and then the headless one by the same way as the past. Also, the mortal blade death after the shinobi execution was so fucking satisfying!

Rest at the idol right there and thats it for now

Also I will say that you are getting dangerously close to the point of no return for endings. You still have a few more bosses to go, but you're about to run into the 'decision' I mentioned earlier. It's super obvious what the right thing is to do, but just a reminder that once you do it's probably time to look up an ending guide if you care enough.

You don't have to look up anything right now - you can still get access to the 3 better endings and more of the game if you make the right decision soon. If you choose the bad ending you do get a unique boss fight or two but you do get locked out of the endgame and forced into NG+.

Ehh I still don't think he needs a guide. After the "decision" you need to basically go on a little dialogue quest with Emma and Kuro. It does get a little tricky figuring out where to find her at points I guess so I'm not saying a spoiler-free guide wouldn't help, but I feel like it's possible to figure it out without one.

All you're really looking to do is get a certain item that allows you to fight an optional boss, and you have to make sure you get that before a near-endgame boss

You can eavesdrop on Kuro when he's standing in the middle of the incense room by hiding behind one of the walls

In a few ways yes.
You may have noticed some time passed since you beat Genichiro
As soon as you beat the next boss, that will happen again and some areas will be populated by new enemies and new minibosses
Some of which will disappear again once you defeat the second-to-last story boss and even more time passes.
Once you do that parts of the Ashina Outskirts will become inaccessible (its not really a spoiler, but just in case)

I don't recall any time passing after Genichiro, but you def wanna make sure you explore everywhere and beat every mini-boss in Ashina Castle before defeating the next main boss.

The two locations we spoiler tagged are the only areas that change throughout the game, everywhere else stays more or less the same

So I go back to the divine child to see if shed tell me something new since I had both snakes hearts. Nope. She gave me more rice though.

I try to warp back to the idol where the headless ape was, but the game wont let me. Uhhh why not game. I warp to the poison pool, walk there, and for fuck sakes a Shichimen warrior (or whatever this one was called), has taken up residence there.

Cant deathblow it, so here we go. I use some divine confetti and go ham, but his terror death ray takes off one of my life bars, as I got hit twice in a row. Got it back when I hit a deathblow. Got killed again, resurrected, and beat him with a sliver of health left. Only 1 gourd, 2 pacifying agents, and 2 divine confetti left (had more in storage, but I meant for this battle).

So its dead now, hopefully nothing else makes its home here! First try was nice, but that was terrifying. Tells me I should be able to kill the other one, which I think was in the abandoned dungeon. Will leave that for later though, onto new areas!

Interesting. Still have the other one to fight at some point!

I venture farther in, getting into the hidden forest. A lotta ghosts and ghost dogs at the bottom, and a Headless, who murdered me very quickly. Went a different route eventually, found the temple that a dude was talking about, and something playing a flute or something inside. Couldnt get in, and couldnt get to the second floor, so kept wandering.

Found a different area with some monkeys, and Tukijiro the Glutton. Got a stealth deathblow on him, and basically did the same thing I did against the drunkard way back. Hack at him when he drinks or spits on his blade. He got one kill on me, but I resurrected and took him down shortly after.

I kept moving on, eventually finding myself back at the temple. A lotta messages about a super hard boss, and the idol is way back. What the fuck, thats like a squid thing down there. Kill it once with a stealth deathblow then.............murder it right away. I take a parting shot as I always do when a bosss second life bar shows up, and when I saw how much damage it did, I was reminded of Pinwheel in dark souls 1. So I just mashed attack, and down Mist Noble went.

All the most and fog is gone, no more ghosts, though that headless is still there. Will go back later. Kept moving on, and eventually got to Mibu village. Oh fuck me, that purple ninja fucker is back. Dude murdered me twice before I finally just got patient and eventually took him down.

Holy fuck there are a lot of little people here. I kill them, they get back up, sometimes 3 times. And theyre EVERYWHERE!! I literally run around trying to grab as many items as I can. I end up finding a gourd seed lol. I kill some fish in the water too, and eventually make it to the next idol, and thats it for tonight.

This is a very terrifying place!

I think Sekiro only gets better as it goes on. Most From games (maybe all except sekiro?) peak in the first half and I tend to not enjoy the back half as much as the first. Sekiro is the outlier where it builds and gets better as it goes. I think it's due to having a combat system that really rewards getting better, and you're getting new prosthetics and new ways to play, versus the souls series where there's a strong chance unless I'm going sorcery or faith that I'm playing the same way early as I am late. Sure I might get new spells, but they're generally just upgraded versions of things I've been using for hours.

ORin of the Water. Yeah, definitely tricky fight, was difficult to get my timing down. Definitely did mortal blade twice at the beginning to take off some of her health.

Got her on try #5. Focused on jumping her sweep straight up and doing posture damage, along with deflecting, but damn she does a lotta posture damage herself. She only did the sweep once in phase 2.

I explore farther up, kill everyone in front of the weird temple thing, find a dude inside that likes to slurp liquid. Uhhh okay.

Get the prayer bead up top. Then continue on. Aaaaaaand another boss fight?! Corrupted Monk, though she only has one health bar at least. Guess what, doesnt matter, she has a lot of health and wild swings. Eventually figured out how to relatively reliably bait the thrust, but took me 5 tries to kill her.

Got the stone, and learned how to dive underwater! Found a prayer bead down there too. Now trying to warp back to Kuros room aaaaaaand I cant? Uhhh why?

Uhhhh so Ashina Castle is under attack from assassins and purple ninjas and holy fuck is navigating hard. Im trying to activate all the idols again, and thats a struggle.

I get behind one door and hear roaring. The roaring sounds like an ogre. Fuck me, its another ogre. I eventually get into the antechamber, run away from two Ashina elites and a purple ninja (who then turn on each other), and drop to the lower beam. Oh hey, theres the ogre. Im able to deathblow him from above, and I take him out my first try. Got hit by the diving grab once, but using that pillar in the middle was helpful.

More exploring, activate the old grave idol, and kill a tiny red hat assassin, who says it shouldve been impossible. Uhhh nope. They suck to fight though.

I get to the Ashina dojo idol, and of course theres something right in the adjoining room. Longshadow Vilehand, so I assume theres poison involved. Uhhhhh why is there also a purple ninja?! Oh fuck, Im dead.

Yep, thats where Im going to call it for the night lol

After 7 playthroughs O'rin is the only mini-boss that I still don't have the timing completely down. Like Seven Spears kept wrecking me in my first run but now I can confidently beat him without taking a hit whereas O'rin always gets me several times before I beat her. I'd say her and that Ninja in the well are the hardest mini-bosses but the latter for bad design and terrible camera than actual difficulty.
