The common mistake here is thinking its severed because of their political ideology. My parents and both their spouses voted trump as did some friends. I dont like it but thats what it is.

the people I cut off arent just trump supporters. They are absolute morons who advertised that stupidity in the way they articulate why they support trump. Also in the way they antagonize shit like a 12 year old when they say shit like MAGA 2020 like its some bad ass comeback/rebuttal/rallying cry.

I dropped stupid ass Biden supporters too, theres just been far fewer than the dumb ass Trump ones.

Political ideology is just an extension of a person's values. I don't want anything to do with someone who comes to the conclusion that we should build our society around conservative ideals. Not enough to call them a friend anyway

If someone at this point still supports Trump, i'd rather befriend a rock. If you want to be Republican, fine. It's your right as a free American to pick a side, regardless if I completely disagree with the stance of that party almost entirely. Well that's the problem, if you're privileged enough to be able to support the current incarnation of the GOP then that means politics has such little impact on you that it might as well be a preference on jean fit. I really, really struggle to communicate to people who support Trump that there are actual policy consequences to this, that it isn't just a culture-war anime tournament arc where an election happens and then a 4-year off-season where you gloat about the victory to people who prefer mimosas over natty lites.

I think this is disconnect that we're seeing when topics like this happen, where some people (pretty much always conservatives) seem dumbfounded at taking politics seriously enough to end a friendship over it. "It's just my team, bro! It ain't that serious!" while people die from lack of health care or can't visit family members due to bullshit travel bans (ahem).

I don't talk politics with my friends. After this election, I will be glad we can move on to other things.

So, and this a pretty obvious observation to make, this isn't the case anymore, at least for some groups of people.

A frustration I have is that governance has long-since shifted from public service, but as a means to maintain control for the party. This has trickled down from the assholes doing the governing (a very generous description at times) to folks at large. You see this in the "conservative/liberal/feminist/etc. tears" gimmick.

So governance has become all about "winning." When it very clearly shouldn't be. And people who adhere to this sort of thinking, regardless of affiliation, are those who I would make an effort to cut from my life.

Because that mindset tells me you (the general you, not you specifically) have no actual ethos, no actual moral compass. And I find that absolutely repugnant.
