Wasn't the whole point of Inauguration being months later so that the snows could melt and everyone could travel to D.C. AND so that recounts and duels and, like, pamphlet-printing could challenge any dubious victor?

That's a good question. In TN January is normally when we start getting snow.

Along historic Rt. 1, February is actually snowiest month for many states. By January, most places had dug out from the November and December snow, and were letting the sun melt shallower ice and snow. Shovels, gravel, rocksalt and chains on wheels all predate automotive travel.

'Jingle Bells' was released in November and is about having snow deep enough to drive a sleigh through to reach a harvest meal, so November/December were definitely snowy months.
