"It was all so wonderful that I do not know how to describe this first glimpse of things never heard of, seen or dreamed of before," wrote conquistador Bernal Daz del Castillo.

Five-hundred years ago, two men met and changed much of the world forever.
About 500 Spanish conquistadors ragged from skirmishes, a massacre of an Indigenous village and a hike between massive volcanoes couldn't believe what they saw: an elegant island city in a land that Europeans didn't know existed until a few years before.

This miraculous city was buried and is still buried by an advanced civilizantion.

i can think of 2 pragmatic reasons for burying the city and a third reason based on what we know of Cortes.

reason 3. The accomplishments of the savages disturbed Cortes.

reason 1. Destroying the city destroyed the economy

reason 2. The city filled the subordinates with wondering and wondering leads to thinking and rethinking

* * *

The reason though, I believe, is that Mexica city offered new knowledge and new possibilites. I really think that there should be international support to reconstruct the city. I think that it could be as important as a quantum computer.

Thinking a lot about this. I believe that the death penalty is human sacrifice and that we of European cultural heritage have not stopped human sacrifice.
