Well, Jimmy Carter may have been a lousy president, but apparently he's still out there helping people so... I guess he's a candidate? Kinda depends on what you mean. Some presidents continued to do a lot for the country after they left office, some continued to help to benefit their party, others basically just lined their pockets, and others kinda exited political life entirely to do other things.

EDIT: Oh, is this just a matter of best previous president rather than stuff they did after being president? In that case... undecided.

Can you solely blame the president for all the other factors that led to the Civil War? And I'd say the destruction of slavery was a pretty big step towards the nation achieving the ideals it set for itself. So the destruction was necessary. Unless you're arguing that slavery was a good thing, which I wouldn't put past you!

You're right, liberals wouldn't do that.

Also, I never said it was happening, it's a discussion point I've seen on social media, so it's on someone's mind. Either way, you can't argue that the country is not divided right now.

He in some ways made my life harder as a kid, although I prob only survived early on because of school lunches, so I guess I need to blame him for that as well. It was MUCH harder to get a job when I was 11-14 or so because of child labor laws though. I had to work at christmas tree lots, and under the table jobs only.

That being said, many of his changes were amazing, and he build up the infrastructure more than any other president. Maybe he wasn't perfect, but we need more progressive presidents like that in my opinion. If he had been able to continue, everyone would have the right to a job right now, which I think would be great (no welfare etc, just everyone has work they can do, and should do).

I don't even think that is needed anymore because you can automate most menial labor jobs at this point, but for the past 40 years or so, I would have much prefered everyone having a job (and even being required to answer phones etc if your disabled), than welfare/disability etc. Work is an important part of a healthy life I believe.

Anyway FDR at least did something and tried to make America better (for everyone not just the rich). Nobody is perfect but I sure would like more presidents like him, especially now.

There is no civil war coming. Some more terrorist attacks? Guaranteed, they're doing that even while Trump is still in office him losing will just fire them up even more. I don't think a few militias will be able to rise it to a level of a civil war though.

Trumpsters are just giving themselves too much credit thinking they can be freedom fighters when if they take up arms they'll just be terrorists.

Trump could never hope to do as much damage as FDR. The only way you'd reach FDR's level of disaster is if you appointed somebody like AOC.

IronBornCorps posted...
How many people think Civil War 2: Electric Bugaloo is looming?

Which is basically asking: "How many people are idiots?" Because, unlike the "Civil" War (which wasn't really a Civil War so much as it was a war of secession, same as the American Revolution), we don't have the same kind of clear division if the nation were to split.

JigsawTDC posted...

Considering he was at least partly responsible for many of those factors, you kinda can. Had it looked like a more moderate candidate was to be elected, it might have been avoided. You know what would have made Lincoln a great president? If he had brokered a reconciliation that didn't cost anybody their lives!

JigsawTDC posted...
Unless you're arguing that slavery was a good thing, which I wouldn't put past you!

And apparently I can't put anything past you, considering you think the ONLY way to end slavery is with war despite the fact that EVERY other major colonizing, slave-owning power at the time managed to end slavery without going to war with itself. It's a false dilemma. If not for Lincoln, slavery might have lasted slightly longer but it was literally always going to go away because it was going away on a worldwide level

CarefreeDude posted...

Considering that far-leftists defend criticisms of horrible presidents with "BUT TRUMP!!!" whataboutisms, it's inevitable. It's also hilarious because their whataboutisms cite things that those other presidents did to a far worse degree.

Pretty much all of the US presidents have been somewhere between mixed to atrocious on racial issues/events... I guess it's either Teddy or FDR. A lot of the people that diss FDR seem unaware of the fact that most of his economic policies were implemented either to prevent revolution from taking full root in the USA after the Depression or to advance the USA's position against foreign entities, with the Axis Powers being the most obvious example. For all the bitching about said policies, they are probably what kept the USA from having to fight a full-on revolt of the economically devastated working class, and pushed back the rising support for fascism in the USA.

I'd have to go with Jimmy Carter. Way back in the 1970s, Carter attempted to warn the country that the Elites were trying to takeover and that they were looking for cheap labor which was found once Nixon convinced China to meet and right around the mid 1970s, is when the Corporate Coup D'Etat began in which major US manufacturing companies began to ship American jobs offshore looking for cheap labors sans any benefits or rules and regulations and they found it in China.

Carter also tried to warn American hourly paid workers that the country was becoming one of consumption. From the 1940s until the 1970s, American hourly paid workers prospered because unlike today, workers shared in the profits that they had helped make and as a result of that, people were buying homes, multiple vehicles, etc and just spending money foolishly and by the time the 1980s rolled around, all that working class people had gained from the end of WW2 had been lost.

Gone were the decent wages, benefits, company retirement plans, labor unions, Government rules and regulations etc which had all been watered down and that's where we're at today.

And those jobs that were lost during the Corporate Coup D'Etat are never coming back and the jobs that replaced them were low paying menial service oriented jobs like UPS, Amazon, hotels, fast food etc.

Im giving it to Washington. As far as I know, he's the only president to never want the job and he only did it because the country needed him. He refused more power when it was offered to him and he was of course instrumental in the creation of the country. In retrospect, he like many others, had faults of the time but he was unanimously elected and had the love of the people. From what I understand he was also very conscientious of objections to his rule and made efforts to bridge division among congress, his staff, etc. He also was very committed to being neutral as a country which I think is a good think (mostly).
