It's definitely more functional in colder climates. Without something warm on getting out of bed in the middle of the night to use the bathroom when it's cold is torture.

Aye, even in a house without a furnace in the winter where I've needed to get up in the middle of the night to add logs to the fire, I never had to sleep in that crap. Big ole blankets do a fine job on their own

Weather's one factor. The other is that it can be annoying for some people have sheets/blankets that aren't comfortable on their skin. Some people also like heavier clothes for neurodivergent reasons; one of the reasons I have trouble sleeping in seasons other than winter is because I like to be buried under a fuck-ton of blankets.

Bundling up saves you money, too, if you can't afford to turn the heat up.

I always used to associate thermal underwear with hunting, because the only people I knew who wore it were people who were planning to go sit quietly in a tree stand for hours and hours in the middle of November, so they needed the added warmth.

Union suits made sense in a time before indoor plumbing. Imagine dropping a deuce in a rickety wooden shed at 10pm on a cold and breezy night after walking thru a foot of freshly fallen snow to get there in a time before indoor plumbing.
