Even if the flu vaccine isn't completely effective, odds are it will reduce the severity of the disease. And since the vaccine is free under almost all insurance plans, from some employers, and many local health departments, there is absolutely no reason not to get it, even if it only offers partial protection.

But being healthier will help a person survive it with or without a vaccine. Maybe, just maybe, we should focus on that instead

Why not both? It takes maybe an hour to get a flu shot. That leaves 8759 other hours each year (8783 this year) to focus on being healthy. More if you walk to get the shot so you're killing two birds with one stone. The two are nowhere close to being mutually exclusive.

I haven't regularly gotten a flu shot for a number of years. I get sick incredibly rarely - I think the last time I had the flu was something like 14 years ago. I also live alone so I'm not really worried about tracking it to anyone in my family and I'm smart enough to stay home if I have symptoms.

Plus I work from home now cause covid anyway so I likely won't get one unless I really feel compelled to. Historically I've only ever really gotten it if they brought them to my office.

Hehe, I know. There was a rumor years ago that the flu shot could actually make you allergic to eggs though. I think they did ask if you were allergic to eggs before giving you the flu shot and that is probably where the rumor started.

I WAS allergic to eggs (Still can make me sick, but not nearly as bad) but never had a problem with getting the flu shot.

If might just have to do what was in the flu shot. Like I wouldnt be asked about my allergies before because they thought that shellfish allergies had something to do with iodine, though I heard that its been proven false now or something. But they had to ask...

The way flu shots are made means they often contain traces of egg proteins, so there have been concerns in the past about people with egg allergies reacting adversely to them. In practice, however, severe allergic reactions to the vaccine have been very rare, even among egg-allergic people, so it's no longer felt to be a serious risk factor.

I can't get any medical care really, and basically go out for groceries and that's it.

I care about other people in general, but considering the amount of drunk drivers yelling at us/people throwing fire crackers at us/trying to run us over/ general harassment the very rare walk/kids throwing rocks at us because their parents are shit... Well don't wish death on people but I do hate most of my community a lot tbh. In regards to the end question.

I've genuinely had a child climb a drain pipe after threatening to kill me with a knife to get into where I was babysitting. I wish I was joking.

I'm surprised half our town isn't screwed tbh the way people act around here.

The reason you get vaccination boosts is because antibodies don't last forever and need some antigen re-exposure for your body to not yeet it into killing itself. Same with allergies

On the other spectrum you can also trigger de-sensitization by constantly being exposed to the allergen in your blood stream making your body eventually recognize it as "self" ...eventually. If it doesn't kill you. ~Allergy shots yay

Yeah, eggs used to make me sick, even if I didn't know eggs were in something, which happened alot, I guess over time my body just figured I was an total moron because I kept eating stuff that made me really sick, and evolved to deal with it.

I still can get sick if I eat alot of eggs, but I can eat a whole boiled egg just fine now and not get sick afterwards. Pretty much needs to be cooked though, raw egg, or undercooked egg is still really bad.

I hated mushrooms as well (didn't have an allergic reaction) but now I love them. I may no longer have as bad of a reaction to coconuts as I used to, but I still totally and completely avoid them. Unlike eggs that is pretty easy to do, so I don't think I have developed a tolerance at all.

Did you get it right after getting the shot?

I believe the shots basically give you a very weak strain of the flu, that your body is supposed to fight off, and therefore, have the anti-bodies to fight off the full strain in the future. The thing is there are multiple strains so the shot may not actually do anything for you, and even if it does, it may only reduce how severe the flu is (If I remember right).

In theory though, perhaps if you have not been exposed to the flu at all, or your immune system is compromised, you could get it even from the shot (no clue, but if you got it right after that would make that more likely).

I used to get the shot every year (I was a teacher) but since I'm avoiding all contact with people due to the virus, it makes absolutely no sense to go somewhere and expose myself potentially to the much more deadly virus, in order to get a flu shot that will only protect me from........getting a flu that is less communicable than the virus is.

That said, some symptoms that we associate with the flu are actually our immune system's response to it, rather than anything caused directly by the virus itself. The vaccine can trigger an immune response (albeit a much weaker one than a full infection would give), leading to symptoms like a mild fever or fatigue.

The nasal spray contains a live, weakened (attenuated) virus that cannot survive or replicate at internal body temperatures. This is a strain of flu that does not normally cause disease in humans (though there may be risk for those with immune deficiency). They take this non-pathogenic virus, and add in the surface antigens of the strains thought to be widely circulating. This allows you to mount an immune defense against the "bad" flu, without ever having to be infected by it.
