Yeah... seasons 1 and 4 are the best and really 1-5 are the only ones I'd consider worth watching. I'd talk about why I don't care for the last three seasons, but that'd go into spoilers.

Anyway 2-01 was very not good. Glad the abusive husband is dead, that subplot sucked. Dexter being a shitty killer all of a sudden sucked. Cant say I care about the replacement LT. Debra is good. Alot of nothing in like 60 minutes.

Although most people recommend watching seasons 1-4, and I dont disagree with that, I think its perfectly valid to just watch season 1 and call it good!

I checked the episode descriptions. They don't even remotely start the meat of the plot for S2 in the first episode it looks like.

Season 2 is my favorite season for sure. If you're not far in it give it more time.

2 > 1 > 4 > 3 >> the rest (one of the seasons after 4 is okay I think it was 6 or 7 but not worth the others) imo

However, if the creators had known how long the show would last, i think they would have saved the plotline for a later season

It absolutely felt like a series finale, and i think the show was weaker afterwards

Bartz's rankings look about right to me, although i gave up during season 5.

8 has a few scenes with Aimee Garcia that are nice and that is enough to put it over 6 for me which has no redeeming qualities whatsoever

All 4 first seasons are great. I have no idea why people don't like 3, but whatever
4 is the peak so people hating on 5 is understandable, and it's really not a great season, but it's not "bad" - it's just mediocre. Totally passable, totally watchable
7 is kind of a mess because it split to 4 different storylines, and I feel like it hurt it a bit. If they focued on the main storyline (Isaak) it could have been so much better
But instead it has to share screen time with Hanna, Debra accepting Dexter for what he is, and Laguerta investigation
8 is very bad but at least it has some... ok episodes, but every episode in season 6 was painful to watch so...both of them suck badly

tldr
4 first season are fantastic
5 and 7 are ok
6 and 8 are dogshit

iirc 3 is less interesting because dexter felt too invincible- there was no urgency. additionally, certain characters were gone, there weren't sufficient replacements, and logic went out the window a little bit. i think season 4 with the original cast still around would've been extremely good television instead of just rather good television

however, it's been a long time since i've seen it. i wasn't the hugest fan of the show in the first place, and always felt like it was just barely good enough to not quit (until it wasn't)

3 has some problems in that the primary antagonist is boring and one-dimensional and by the end is basically a cartoon villain. It all becomes too unbelievable in a show that already requires a decent amount of suspension of disbelief, while also being pretty predictable (Miguel murdering the defense lawyer was obvious episodes in advance)

I don't think it's bad but a pretty clear cut below the other early seasons.

2 definitely improves as it goes.

8 gets a boost because it was comically awful by the end and great to make fun of (the one scene with the treadmill... my god), 6 is just boring. 7 was a nice rebound until it wasn't. Honestly the show was a mess even at the best of times, outside the A-plots there was always a bunch of annoying nonsense going on. 4 has the singular best main plotline imo but there's a bunch of garbage subplots around it too.
