The free games don't matter when they force exclusivity deals.

Steam right now, but I am migrating what games I can to gog because of the offline installers.

Haven't used epic, they don't have any games I want. To be fair I haven't checked their store in a while.

User reviews. Searchable tags. Great sales. Community hubs. Mod support.

A ****ing shopping cart, because Epic is apparently too poor to hire whatever internet sorcerer it takes to make one.

Steam has a ton of problems and needs a competitor. Epic is not that competitor. It offers nothing because they have the money to take games hostage, so they don't have to try and be better than Steam.

Let's be real. The reason user reviews don't exist is because Steambabies would tank it regardless of the quality of the store itself. They may arrive at some point, but it would be shooting themselves in the foot to include them right now. It's something they should have, but that's less their fault that they don't.

The tags on Steam are fucking trash. You can find multiple top-down RTS/TBS games with the "action" tag FFS.

Epic has sales as well, including but not limited to their free weekly games.

That's great you enjoy a community. As someone who's primarily singleplayer and has never needed to fuck with another person outside of couch co-op back in the day, I spend most of Steam-time in offline. I'm sure I'm hardly the only one.

Guess what, mods work just fine and are as easy to install without Steam integration.

I posted all the free games I have on epic awhile ago. It's like $1000 worth of games or something. Yeah, about half of em I already owned on steam, but it's still hundreds of dollars of games, many of them very good ones.

The sad thing is I have never bought anythign from the epic store. I really need to some day. I also have not really PLAYED any of the free games from the store either because I have too many on steam in my backlog lol.

So I don't feel too bad about all the free games since I have not played any of em yet.

Still I got most of my friends to start getting them free as well a year or so ago. They really do give away a ton of good stuff.

Steam could really use a proper competitor to make them less lazy and complacent, but Epic isn't it. The client is functionally inferior in every possible way (it's been over a year and there's still no shopping cart, because apparently Epic hasn't shopped online since online shopping became a thing), their sale practices are extremely questionable (at least they were last I heard, with publishers not actually getting a say in whether or not their games were discounted, which is basically Walmart's business strategy and not something I want being normalized in the games industry), and their efforts to "compete" by throwing Fortnite money around to buy exclusivity deals aren't something I want to reward. I've taken advantage of their free games, and even actually played a couple of them (I'm actually working my way through Subnautica right now, which was one of the first ones they gave away), but I don't see myself spending any money there any time soon, especially where most of their high-profile exclusive purchases are now making their way onto Steam.

You might want to look into GOG Galaxy. It lets you integrate multiple other libraries into a single client so you don't have to manually open multiple different launchers. It'll still open them for installation purposes, and run them in the background as needed, but it is definitely more convenient than having to manage multiple clients and libraries myself.

Steam

Epic came to the party way too late for me to care. If they had made a game store like 8 or 9 years ago back when every publisher created their own PC game store (EA, Ubisoft, Activision, Rockstar, Microsoft) I might have cared. Now they decided to do it when everyone else is starting to move away from that model and I really don't want to deal with it.

Plus, I have no interest in Fortnite and they discontinued support for Unreal Tournament 4, so I don't even want any of their games...

Honestly, if Steam hadn't been around 15 years, I likely would have never bought anything from them (and even now I've only paid for a handful of deeply-discounted games). And in general I hate DD, and in the case of consoles probably won't buy much of it again

It's actually been a pretty solid assortment of free stuff. Most of the higher-profile games they release are older ones, but there have been plenty of games that have been on my radar for a while that I haven't taken the plunge on for whatever reason, and getting them for free is nice. Again, I've played a grand total of two of them (Slime Rancher and now Subnautica), but I've at least got the option. It's not enough to convince me to run the client on startup or anything, but it's worth the effort of poking my head in every week or two to see what's there.

I do wonder if theres a way for companies to effectively move past the digital storefront model or at least to a more developer controlled variant than steam. Ideally it'd be a system where devs pay directly for the server hosting and visibility on the storefront without any cut of the sales going to the storefront. They just get their flat fees for hosting allowing devs to receive 100% of the profits from sold games. If there became a solid and flexible hosting service someone could probably afford to run a free client for managing the games and helping you find new games and stuff that you like.
