How much of a difference is there ? is whole bean worth the extra hassle of buying a grinder and doing it yourself ?

Youll notice a difference but only if youre grinding it right before making the coffee

and imo its not enough of a difference to really be worth the effort

As in buying my whole beans and grinding them myself or buying beans already ground up, is there a massive difference in taste to make buying whole beans and grinding them up yourself.

Whole bean is definitely better. If you drink coffee regularly like I do, I think its worth it to go through the extra little effort and slight price difference to have good coffee

Ive heard whole bean, but it was usually from the hipsters. I dont drink coffee regularly. But when I had, its be pre-ground... For many reasons. Like, Im lazy, I dont have time to grind them myself, I probably wouldnt get the flavor I like, etc...

I don't typically notice a difference between pre-ground and fresh-ground, even as black, and especially not after the creamer goes in.

The whole-bean variant is offered in many more flavors at the store though, so a +1 for that. I especially love the fruit ones. Raspberry <3

He's only 7 but he's big for his age. Someone could definitely put him to work as a brick layer or landscaper or something and get their dogs-worth out of him. 2 or 3 medium-sized dogs for sure but I bet I could double that if they're small dogs. Think of all the beans 6 dogs could chew! I could go into business!

Even bad beans can be improved a little with a bad grinder.
The better the bean, the more of a difference keeping the bean intact and grinding it just before use will make.
Due to not wanting to use the fancy expensive coffee every day, you'll be trying to make it last, as a whole bean it WILL last, and it'll be better coffee after 3 months then it would be if you ground it when you got it.

Lets talk grinder though.

A cheep little spice mill will work, it'll be too hot, you'll burn the coffee just a little, but it's a start.
To go fancier you'd want something specialised for coffee that won't get too hot, but honestly that's further then most people want to go.

Once you go this far though, it's time to stop using paper filters. Gold plated metal mesh filters.

If you have the time, don't use a coffee machine either, french press at the least. Pourover if you really can't get your hands on one.

Each thing you improve, coffee will become that small bit better. You might not be able to notice, but pour a mug for somebody who dosen't take all the steps, and they will. Make a cycle of small improvements, and then go around again and get something fancier.

Here's a less pretentious take: try different kinds and make what you like. French press vs filtered (and even within paper vs metal filtered pourover) will change the mouth feel and flavor. People have different preferences and that's fine. French press isn't inherently better than paper filtered.

Fruit shouldn't be in coffee. The worst one I ever had was peach flavored.

Went with ground for the first lot i ordered, might venture into whole bean and a grinder later on.

The company i ordered from grinds the coffee the same day they dispatch it to you so its not like store bought where it could have been shitting in a warehouse then in the store for weeks, assuming it makes a huge difference that is.

Fresh ground by the roaster is almost as good as buying the whole bean especially if you don't plan on storing it long.

I'm not a coffee drinker, but I bought my girlfriend a grinder because we moved to a different province where she couldn't get her favourite varieties of coffee. She'd buy like 10 bags of them whenever we came back to visit, but that was roughly twice a year, and I figured buying whole bean and grinding it herself would help the stockpile keep better. It's hard to tell how much of a difference that made because I bought that for our first Christmas away (which was also our first trip back home) and she didn't exactly bother buying a control bag of pre-ground to compare, but she hasn't complained about the coffee going bad, so I guess that's good. We've since moved back and it's probably not as necessary now, but she's kept buying whole bean.

Depends on your grinder, but generally whole beans is going to be better. I grind every morning, generally on beans that have been roasted within the last month. If you want to drink high end coffee it can be a pretty expensive hobby/habit. If you put a lot of cream or sugar in your coffee, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

The other thing to consider with whole bean vs ground coffee is how you are planning on brewing your coffee. The way it comes ground is probably more suited for a drip brewer unless you are buying it espresso grind, which then it would be very fine ground.
