So I was fighting Hades with two charges of Death Defiance and died without using either. Is that caused by getting hit with one of the attacks that turns the edge of the screen green?

The sides turning green means he hit you with his cast and will do 50% more damage, I think.

the EM3 fight was rough with this. i finished with 0 defies and 12 health or something. guan yu certainly increases the adrenaline factor of runs quite a bit. had weak on the attack. there's not enough pins tbh

I initially had demeter on special/dash, sold the special after tartarus and then got offered a heroic hangover dash from dio so of course i grabbed that. was hopping to get the dio legendary for the hangover/festive fog combo and just really have every single festive fog boon, but i couldn't quite get there. some day!

Does anyone know if it's possible to gain the ability to use every Companion on the final boss fight, or are certain ones just forever locked out of it?

i stumbled into that trio randomly the very first time i used naegling's board and have been in love ever since. difficult to get everything together, but even without the ideal boons it's great

I haven't tried EM Hydra but the regular one is the most binary fight to me. If I have a reliable deflect I'll do it with 0 damage. If not then I'll take a lot of damage.

Almost beat Hades with the rail without taking a single bit of damage (due to Athena legendary and acorn but still)

It's tearing me up because I think I would have had a chance if Hades didn't roll the worst possible minibosses. I was on Magnet claws with Doom on Special and Hangover on Attack. But the thing about some enemies is (and I could be wrong) that when they leave the screen, they clear their statuses. Hades's invisibility works like this, I'm pretty sure and he first rolled Skull-Crusher, and then Skull-Crusher + Wretched Sneak. I don't think Crusher clears ailments when it jumps but Sneak absolutely does. Regardless, it was very hard to get hits in on both and they just ate up so much time and health to deal with since I had no effective way of quickly taking them down.

On a more positive note, had a pretty sick Blade Rift build


Not pictured here is the Ares dash and Hermes Dash+2, and Engulfing Vortex as the enabler for the legendary. I became an unstoppable whirlwind of death. I didn't have a lot of respect for Ares's cast because the base cast is so mediocre, but oh boy does it get going once you get some investment in it.

Also I've been told I play Shield wrong because my preferred playstyle is to pick Zeus shield, put some kind of multi-hit status (hangover, chill, lightning) on Special, Poseidon on Attack, and then just run around like a madman slamming enemies into walls while rarely ever blocking or Bull Rushing.

But listen. It's so much fun.

aww yeah platinum(?) get! I got all the other achievements and the epilogue, so I decided to go for Heat 16, and it was... incredibly easy. Build:

Pretty much every enemy was a joke. I had Poseidon on attack, so no regular enemies could get close to me, and Special just melted every boss/miniboss. I didn't take the higher level of Tight Deadline since I figured higher Heat might slow me down, but that didn't happen in the slightest. No Death Defiance used, and even Theseus was a joke (I think I got hit twice). Think I'll try Heat 32 and maybe do some death scumming to farm Artemis/Demeter/Hypnos affection, but I'll be about done with it after that.

Up to 7 clears now. Got 0 heat clears on all weapons and a 1 heat clear with the Shield.

This game is pretty good.

Used the Spear for the first time, Achilles aspect. More fun than I expected but still not my fav. Beat Hades pretty easily. But what was really interesting is that I didn't buy anything from a store, saved it all for the titan blood at the end, and I didn't really have any more trouble than my previous runs. I might just avoid the store in general, and use that perk that gives you a % money bonus per floor. Though I do want to beat Charon.

this build never fails to disappoint. lots of good stuff i didnt have room to feature with the pins either, including 42% for lightning to strike twice, hangover dash and the dio/ares duo boon that makes hangover faster, and probably more i'm forgetting. oh, and of course the 305 base damage trippy flare

had a really rough patch in elysium though where i took a chaos boon right before the boss that hurt me whenever i attacked (got 30some% more cast damage for it tho) and almost wiped to the bosses. pulled through in the end though, got clutch boons in styx, the well of charon 50% cast damage increase right before finding the sack, and just demolished hades in a minute or less.

Lost to Hades yesterday on a 1 heat Guan Yu spear run. I end up "chasing the dragon" too much with that weapon where I end up getting hit again trying to use the spin attack to gain back life. Instead of doing the smart thing and just spamming the special from distance.

yeah trying to play catch up with guan yu is always a mistake. better to just get in the habit of like, throwing in dash specials whenever you have an opening and aren't at max health. and against bosses i almost never try and heal unless my spin move has a strong boon.

oh yeah, general spear tip: dash strikes. dash strikes are your bread and butter most of the time, unless you get a hammer or boon setup that changes up your special particularly well. guan yu is a little different but i still dash strike a ton with it unless my special is particularily well set or i need to stay back for whatever reason

this was a lot of fun. not pictured is all the boons that helped survivability. aphro/athena/dio/demeter is basically the perfect 4 gods to get as far as survivability boons and i lucked into it. but the hades fight was fun, basically shooting charged specials at him until he approached, when i would dash strike behind him and shoot more skewers, and then when he would go impervious or vanish, charge up the spin attack. i would have maybe preferred to have aphro on the special and demeter on the attack instead of the opposite that i got (because aphro has higher damage boost) but it worked just fine

one fun thing fighting hades, i caught him about to launch into the full screen laser spin and hit him with a max charged spin attack and it interrupted him from ever actually doing the attack. i had dashed away to avoid it and didn't need to

also special shoutout to the dio boon that makes fountains restore all health and gives a permanent damage bonus for each one. i got that early and it saved my ass

I think your build was pretty similar to what mine was on that failed run, other than the Hammer choices. I had an opportunity to take the 3 strike dash and stupidly didn't because I tend not to be a big dash striker. Of course, like you said, for the Spear it's actually a really great and important attack.

I had also gotten that Fountain boost boon early but it was only 3% per instead of 5% as I've gotten in the past. Naturally I hit 2 extra fountains and had the damn thing up to 18%!

Definitely have to give the Guan Yu another, smarter run.

I'm up to 8 clears now (in 31 attempts) after adding a 1 heat Chiron Bow run. I kinda like that weapon a lot, though the fight against Hades was a little closer than I would have liked. Had Demeter on Attack and Dio on Special. I realized by the end that it probably would have been better the opposite as I had a lot of Demeter boons that could have ripped things apart when your Special hits 5 times each strike.

Behold, the rare and highly dubious melee gun build.

Spread Fire was the last hammer buff I needed for the prophecy and when I realized what it did when I took it (which, it gives you a shotgun basically), I thought I had made a huge mistake. It neutered my lightning, basically. But it actually comboed quite nicely with Rocket Bomb later on. Damage output ended up being crazy.

Haven't played in a few weeks but I decided to hop on last night and do a 16 heat run. Highest I've done before that was maybe 8 or 9. Honestly 16 heat felt pretty much identical to 8-9 heat. I beat Hades with 3 death defiance charges left.

The last time I played I tried 32 heat and couldn't make it out of the first area (didn't try more than once though) so I wonder what the heat number is where it flips into being crazy difficult.

i think, from what i have seen, high heat is more just about thorough preparation and clarity of decision making on the run than anything else. like, bringing the right weapon with the right mirror skills and making informed decisions about what you know you're going to have trouble with.

whenever i tackle it i'll definitely be bringing eris, chiron or beowulf/chaos (chaos is probably the better choice for most people), as well as the death defiance skill that caps you at one revive but you get it in every room. this seems to be almost necessary, not just for the revive aspect but the healing aspect of the revive - what i've seen of high heat runs very often involve intentional deaths at the ends of encounters to end with more health than you would otherwise.

it seems clearing high heat mostly revolves around choices like that.

Got a clear on a 1 heat Guan Yu run! Went hard in on the Dash Strike. First boon was the hammer for 3 hit dash strike. Before Tartarus was over I had 2 more boons, 1 from Chaos, that each gave +90+ to dash strike. Needless to say, I was a dashing fool that run and avoided over using the spin strike. Plus that Artemis call is pretty damned nice!

Then I got my 10th clear...
which gives the true ending/epilogue. I was actually kind of pissed I didn't get to fight Hades at the end of that run, though I guess it was nice that we got a happy ending.. I had life steal on the sword and some obscenely high back stab damage. I'm not certain if he just let me pass because it was my 10th clear or if it was just a random thing.

I think I've done about 34 runs total. I'm feeling pretty satisfied, so I'm not sure if I'll really put more time in with this. Yes, I do still have side stories/prophecies I could do, not to mention weapon aspects and helper trinkets to unlock, but I've kind of lost my impetus to continue the grind.

Thats kind of where I'm at. I might just jack the heat up super high for future runs instead of just going one or two at a time for rewards. Its at the point where I clear the game almost 100% of the time on single digit heat
