Regarding don't move, you can still take actions, you just can't move around the battlefield.

"Stop" makes you freeze entirely. Can't take moves or actions at all, for the duration.

I'm very much enjoying the Delita/Ramza relationship.

Yeah!!

iirc Don't Move is literally, you can perform actions but the impacted unit won't be able to move off of the square they occupy. Stop straight up stops them from referring any actions.

I forgot about Don't Move but it definitely neuters enemies who don't have long range attacks, and pretty sure it has a much better chance of landing than Stop does... just another reason Time Mages are great!

Zaland Fort City introduces us to Mustadio and I just about laugh out loud when I see his weapon is a literal GUN. The revolution is coming to Ivalice! The wizards on this map annoy the heck out of me, they charge super fast and hit us before we can really do anything, it takes me a few tries to get through properly. Agrias's AI is annoying me too here, she sometimes selects panels to Cure instead of people, and sometimes uses Protect instead of Cure. She's also fond of just wandering around at the back. Aside from the wizards this map isn't bad, Mustadio's Arm Aim seems incredibly useful and never misses once.

We then get a nice scene fleshing out Ovelia a little bit, and the return of the reed flute. I'm curious what Ovelia's deal will be here, in any other fantasy I would assume she'd be installed on the throne as the Good Monarch, magically ensuring peace across the land. But this game seems to be more complex than that, with class issues and the inherent hypocrisy of the ruling class at the top of its agenda, so I'd think/hope it doesn't go that way. Though Game of Thrones seemed to be anti-monarchy until it suddenly wasn't, so who knows.

We get to see what Summoners are all about on Bariaus Hill, and they pack quite a punch. Shiva just one-shots multiple people, oof. The map layout is also annoying, it's hard to get to everyone. This one takes me several tries, I get pretty annoyed at some of the bad luck with hit chances too, XCOM flashbacks. Little note here I like that all the enemies have unique names. Take that, TLOU2. I've been having some trouble in the past couple of fights so I retrain jobs a bit and now have a Lancer and Oracle (and Ramza now has a healing spell as a Monk which is nice), Jump seems to take too long to be of any real use but attacking from two spaces away is good.

So that's that? The more I know, the worse you appear.

Dycedarg gives the ok for Ramza's murder if he doesn't listen to reason. I like how Gafgarion is openly full of contempt for this man but follows him anyway as that's his job. Dycedarg has a plan, and oddly mentions that Ovelia being with Agrias means there will be many chances to kidnap her...

We get some lore and the Zodiac Brave Story name drop with the Cardinal and Mustadio, and we lose Agrias and the princess to head to the mechanical city of Goug. Things have taken a bit of a left turn here but I trust the game knows what it's doing.

Jump is an attack with a charge time, like spells, but since it's a command rather than a menu, you aren't able to see when it will resolve until you've locked in the Jump. It is most reliable when you are targeting enemies with low CT, because that means there will be more time before their next turn.

I hadn't even noticed the absence of fantasy plot elements til now!

Thanks for the Jump tip, and I'll know to switch secondaries of guests now (which reminds me how weird it was that Ovelia was in the crew but you couldn't deploy her and she didn't show up on screen as a guest either aside from that one waterfall battle).

I've been checking the bar+record stuff periodically, I saw the King has died and the Queen took over and forced out some loyal people, and read the Zodiac Brave entry. I also saw Mustadio is a Bunansa, not sure if that'll be an important connection or how far away from XII the game is (guessing it's in the past given lack of tech? Not sure though, could be far future with the buried underground tech city and stuff. Don't clear this up pls if it's a spoiler. If this is in the past it's depressing as there is still royalty around Ivalice in XII times. Well I don't remember XII super well, they did have that judge system but there's Ashe too so idk.)

Technically you can math out the charge time on jump

It's when 2x jumper's speed would hit 100 CT. So if you're speed 10 it takes 5 clicks. Speed 5 it takes 10. The dumbed down way to figure out if you'll hit your target is try to jump on guys with less than 50 CT, assuming they're not faster than you or hasted (you don't land quicker if you're hasted either). If they are faster you need to do some math or just way overkill it. Like 30 CT or less is pretty much autohhit.

It's why I usually would make Ramza a jumping Thief in playthroughs. Thieves are fast so they land quicker than most classes.

So there's a cutscene with Mustadio and his dad in the records that I haven't seen ingame. Not sure how I missed that. Also I'm guessing the 1 casualty on there is Teta, which is a nice touch.

Nice to know undead enemies still die to Phoenix Downs! Almost makes up for me deciding against giving my White Mage Float before entering the poisonous swamp. That reminds me of one little gripe I have: is there no way to see the layout of the map when selecting your team? I've laid out my crew in bad positions before because of this. Also 'Don't Move' is indeed helpful, thank you for the clarifications on that.

Mustadio leaves the party at Goug for a hot second and gets immediately taken. I like that Ramza cares about him and Mustadio is disappointed to let Ramza down though they've only known each other a few days. The fight here is surprisingly not awful, if you can survive the initial Shiva onslaught the Summoners are pretty harmless once they're low on MP.

Turns out Draclau was in with the Bart company but Mustadio pulled the old Sonic Adventure 2 switcheroo on them with the fake stone. He joins our party properly now (yay!) but loses a bunch of his abilities somehow (boo!). He's still an absurdly good party member with his gun's range+accuracy. Time for a boat ride, which is strangely uneventful given the other boat journeys I recall from the series.

Larg, Goltana, your brothers, everyone... Haven't noticed they're all swept up in the same flow. I'm just going against it. That's all.

Another nice and strange scene with Delita once we get off the boat, poor Ramza isn't getting the answers he wants though. Delita doesn't seem to have much hope for saving Ovelia's life. Draclau kills Rudvich pretty brutally offscreen, and Agrias joins our team (also missing some abilities) after we help her out of a tough spot (Pretty easy battle though, really). I notice at the shop we now have a dictionary and a harp for sale (Bards confirmed!), and Ramza's bio in records now has the line "Fights in search of life." :(

What else can you call it other than 'evil'?

Then comes a fight with Gafgarion at Golgorand Execution Site, which is my hardest fight in the game so far. The party is split in two, Gafgarion is right in your face at the start, the Time Mages are far away and free to cast buffs/debuffs, it's pretty rough. Storywise there's some good stuff here, Ramza argues with Gafgarion (who is a very good devil's advocate) then blames himself for Teta's death, and I'm glad I brought Agrias as she has some decent moments here believing in Ramza despite his identity. Guess I'm gonna bring her and Mustadio to all story fights now in case they have unique dialogue.

No one will mourn your death.

We eventually wear them down after many attempts thanks to some Arm Aim and a lot of Stasis Sword and Haste. Our prize is a scene revealing Delita's allegiance (allegedly...) and the genuinely surprising twist that Ovelia is not Ovelia. I'm so used to secret princess tropes I didn't expect the inversion! (Cool music here too) This is a great twist if true, it really plays into the whole bloodline/commoner v royalty themes they've been laying on. It also makes Ovelia more interesting, and removes the possibility of an 'Inherently Good Monarch saves the day' trope from occurring. Really it just opens a lot of narrative doors. Man, this is... really good so far, in many ways atypical to Final Fantasy.

Yeah, that Mustadio scene is a bonus one you don't actually encounter. Not sure what happened there, but that's the only one like that. And bios regularly update, so keep an eye on those.

Golgorand is a notoriously difficult storyline battle, too. You've got another one coming up soon as well.

I didn't know you could permanently raise/lower Brave/Faith stats like that, that's cool. I don't want to break the game, at least not the first time through, so I probably won't do exploits like that unless I need to. Thanks for letting me know though, I never would have figured that out. I haven't even seen the Samurai class yet.

And I don't feel like I'm breezing through! I'm focused solely on this one game right now and having a great time with it so I'm progressing steadily but man that last battle kicked my ass, even the successful attempt took like an hour.

Had a thought that maybe the other princess isn't dead and it's Alma given that she led a very similar life to Ovelia and her bio mentions she has a different mother, but I dunno maybe that's too obvious. Also I've maxed out the JP for Mustadio's Engineer class already, so I'm worried he might leave soon!

I've been warned before about saving in a separate slot if I'm not on the world map, if that's what you're referring to.

Once a character permanently joins your squad (ie not as a guest) they wont leave unless you dismiss them. And yes, if a character joins that previously was with you as a guest their JP and abilities get reset to starter levels. Its mildly annoying, but they dont generally make so much progress as a guest that its a big setback.

Gonna have to blitz through the game when I get home to catch up to andy, hahaha...

One question for andy or anyone else: does the game utilize the joystick at all or was it just the d-pad? Going to play my greatest hits version on PS3 and I just remembered my PS3 controller had joystick drift so just wondering, but I probably should buy a new one anyways... assuming PS3 controllers are still sold, oh geez. I got a wired backup in any case but once you go wireless...

Yeah it is d-pad only Martin, the game doesn't recognise joystick inputs so you're fine.

I'm happy others are wanting to replay this now! One thing that gets me is just how well this game manages to carve its own identity and feel fresh like 20 years later. The graphical style still pretty much holds up (The character models definitely look better than 7 and 8's), the gameplay hasn't dated at all and the narrative is just so different from FF's usual fare.

I know Tactics Advance isn't liked as much or whatever but it's gonna be hard for me to not give it a shot at some point if it's anything close to this (assuming this game continues to build and doesn't drop off, and I have no reason to think it won't!).

oh ok

At the Castle Gates we have a fun gimmicky battle. I don't know how this could be done if you don't have some form of Cure set on Ramza, maybe healing him from below with a White Mage? Fortunately he's a Monk for me and has Chakra, which heals 60 damage of the 63 Gafgarion inflicts with Night Sword. This allows me to take my time, letting the team below sort everyone out on the outside before having Ramza open the gates (I saw the gate tile but wasn't certain it would actually work, we haven't had anything like that in the game before now). I almost paid the price for my hubris when Gafgarion crit his Night Sword attack, but Ramza got to the gate literally just in time.

I don't want to change the world! I just can't allow people to suffer and die because of some elitist's ideas.

Gafgarion actually dies this time (rip), and a shiver runs down my spine as we fade to a save slot not on the world map... We're soon into another unusual battle against just a single enemy, Cardinal Draclau/Queklain the Tainted King. This dude is straight up a Resident Evil boss, great atmosphere here. The battle is unlike anything we've had so far. Queklain has a nasty habit of casting Nightmare, which seems to cause Sleep or Death Sentence on anyone in its radius. He gets to cast it before we move too. Ramza gets Death Sentence'd, but thankfully he learned Stigma Magic just after beating Gafgarion. He wakes up our healer, which gives us a fighting chance.

The battle is quite a grind, getting hits in when we can (usually once per turn) and waking/healing when possible. I try to keep the party spaced out so we aren't all caught up in an attack, and he switches to Bio3 once down a chunk of health. I don't know how much HP he actually had but it can't have been too much, because the chipping away takes him down before my White Mage runs out of MP. I feel like I got lucky here. (I get that he's a boss and it would've been too easy but I wonder what the canon explanation is for him not taking damage from Seal Evil etc)

We get the Scorpio Stone (2/12... guess we're in for the long haul!) and a very cool scene of Delita manipulating Goltana, taking out one of his advisors, increasing his own station and... kicking off the Lion War. Delita has been busy indeed, though apparently he's not alone in whatever he's ultimately attempting to do. We're plenty of hours in but the war officially begins right now.

Our nation exists because of the people! We exist because of them.

Onto Chapter 3, and we kick off with a small council of assholes and one reasonable man known as Orlandu, aka 'T.G. Cid'. Tensions run high, three months have passed, and Ramza is off to see his brother. This seems a good place to leave things for now. The bar rumours state that 400,000 have died already (!), and there's some more detail about the King's death that mentions an unidentified monster and people being crushed to death. We're heading to underworld territory for sure.

Ramza has gotten most of the Monk abilities so I switch him to Geomancer and look forward to trying that out. Likewise Mustadio is now a Chemist as they can still use guns. Fur shops are available though I don't have the requisite skill necessary to use them (which class is that in? I can't find it by looking through). I am also keenly aware that whichever guest character shows up next will probably betray us and die at the end of this chapter.

-having a certain support ability on everybody which makes it a joke...
-getting Blood Sword from Gaff's crystal (I think you can steal it from him too)

I forgot the Queklain fight happened right after that one, but I'm pretty sure that was my first lesson in save-to-another-save-file for sure, hahaha...

Keep getting those shivers because the save-prompting isn't over yet...!

Gotcha, I'll try out the monster hunting next time.

I didn't steal anything from Gafgarion and he was the last enemy to fall so no crystal, oops. I never considered that anyone would want to (re)play this game because of this topic but that's awesome! Part of the reason I picked Tactics in the first place was Delita's finals run in the contest. If Garnet had outlasted him I probably would've played 9 first, right now I'm very glad Delita got there instead as I'm having a blast with this game. Tactics probably needs more exposure than 8/9 anyway. Seeing how well it holds up I really am shocked it's not been ported onto the Switch or something.

We start off with a rough battle in the snow at Goland Coal City, this was harder than I think it's probably supposed to be. We're allied with Astrologist Olan, Orlandu's protege (thanks for that info, Records). He has Galaxy Stop which is cool but doesn't seem to have a high hit rate. The problems here are threefold- the Thieves charm my mostly male party (didn't realise that until now) one attempt and my guys end up reviving the enemies and just screwing me over. They also steal the weapon right out of my Lancer's hands, rendering him pretty useless. Finally there's Phoenix Downs being used everywhere, nobody seems to want to stay dead on this map. Their Mediator gets revived no less than three times on my successful attempt!

I've cared about you being my half-brother but, after all, bad blood is bad blood.

We get through it in the end, and Olan promises another encounter upon recognising Ramza's name. At the city we have a rather cold encounter with Zalbag, though considering the circumstances he could've treated Ramza much worse tbh, he doesn't seem to have malicious intent.

Ramza is now an enemy of the church. Of all the frequently used RPG tropes, I never get tired of evil churches. This next battle against a Heresy Examiner (lol) is fine, a nice break from the recent few. Alma is with us temporarily and has a strange lack of survival instinct, wandering into danger instead of staying covered. There's little serious danger here though, and Heresy Examiner Zalmo soon flees with his life. Alma convinces Ramza to let her join us (on pretty flimsy pretenses, aren't we just forcing our way into the monastery anyway? No matter).

To Alma's credit she does concede to leaving us to protect Simon while we hunt for the next Zodiac Stone. Scary save time! The Underground Book Storage Second Floor (catchy name) battle feels flooded with enemy Lancers, who are very durable and guard against damage much more often than my own Lancer. This fight isn't exactly easy but we do manage to get through it first attempt, along the way stealing a cool helmet from the Chemist. The Time Mages are a minor annoyance but fragile enough for Mustadio to take care of after a few hits, and 4/5 of my current team having revive capabilities is pretty dang handy.

Certain sacrifices must be made for the revolution! Decadent royalty and nobles must pay! For the people!

We then get another save slot and are right into a battle on the Third Floor. This one is rougher, at one point I am certain I'll have to restart when my healer gets Jump'd right before reviving Ramza. The enemies are hitting so much harder now, and Izlude is jumping all over the place with horrible timing for me! Everybody dies at some point in this battle, and the countdown reaches 0 on multiple occasions. Thankfully I get lucky and manage to heal people up thanks to a well-timed crystal and the aforementioned abundance of reviving ability in the party. I'm quite enjoying Geomancer's gimmicks too, the guaranteed hits and wide range for Ramza is nice. We scrape through (barely) and take down Izlude for now.

Izlude is a pretty cool character considering he just appeared, he seems to have his own moral compass and isn't quite aware of the full extent of the church's plans. Curious how he'll react when faced with the truth, though judging by how the game has gone so far it will end tragically for him. The music on this floor is really good btw.

Our reward for that hard-fought effort is... another menu save? Another battle?? Wiegraf has returned?! I was not prepared for three in a row. I'm gonna have to take a break before attempting this one unfortunately, I'll come back to it later. Phew, this game isn't letting up anymore!

Even if your ideal is great, it's just a dream if you can't fulfill it!

Izlude takes Alma to who knows where (my secret princess theory gets stronger!) and we witness the grand return of Wiegraf! It's no surprise that he is back, but being allied with the church is not where I expected him to end up. Ramza says as much in the midst of this battle. There's some really good conversation happening here but the battle itself was distracting me a bit, Wiegraf comes at us aggressively with his new Agrias-like powers and does major damage from the offset.

You'll never know the feeling of the 'Meager'! You may think you know it, but you've never lived it! You'd never know! 'Reality' is far harsher than you can possibly imagine. Why do you blame me? You have no right to blame me!

Thankfully it's not a 'defeat all enemies' map, I'd normally try to beat everyone anyway but this one seemed so tough I got through it purely by rushing Wiegraf in a couple sets of turns. Even then only two people were left standing. Call it cheesing if you want but it was the only way I could see to get it done!

Wiegraf seems to escape but upon following him out of the monastery it's clear he's been mortally wounded. Izlude reluctantly leaves him (I trust Alma in his hands honestly) but then- the stone speaks! Wiegraf transforms into another Lucavi demon and leaves. I'm honestly pretty sad at this, I had hopes for a face turn for Wiegraf (or for Ramza to shift to siding with him) and with him being gone for so long it's a shame he shows up so briefly before turning like this. It's a great development narratively but a shame nonetheless. This game is very dark :( Not looking forward to meeting him again, hopefully he keeps some of his old self still...

Simon dies too after handing us a big chunky lore book, which I then read in the menu. (Finally back to the world map! Yay!) It's a description of the history of St. 'not-Jesus' Ajora, and I really appreciate the amount of detail they put into here. They have the approved religious version of events, Germonik's 'real' version, Simon's opinions and finally Ramza casting doubts even on Simon's conclusion. I like how non-definitive the text is even when we're ostensibly getting the true version. Of course this is a game and we'll probably get a clear answer eventually, but I'm enjoying how they're handling this. And how they're handling lore in general, leaving large parts of it in the menus/bars but piecemealing it out, not giving ridiculous dumps of text (except this one lol, but this has clear plot relevance) constantly like in later FF entries. Also all the history is told from a biased perspective which is neat.

One notable thing in the Germonik Scriptures is the reference to a Golden Age where airships flew the skies- is this game set long after XII after all?! Another note- a couple of the jobs I've completed have given 'Unexplored Land' rewards, though they seem to be locked to the menu and haven't opened up new areas of the map. Is there anything to this? One of them mentions the Red Wings and Baron- is FFIV set in Ivalice too?! So many connections!

Ramza is told to come to Riovanes Castle, there's a very nice scene for both Delita and Ovelia, and four new maps open up so that's enough! Really cool sequences today.

Most people have to act the roles given to them... Then again, most of them haven't even noticed they're even acting.

The Ramza/Wiegraf conversations are some of my favorite stuff in the game. Every single one of them is great.

They're just Easter Egg references to previous games in the series. All of the discoveries, whether lands or treasures, are stuff from other FF games.

The scene with Delita and Ovelia in the church is one of my favorite parts of the whole game.

There's definitely no shame in just rushing down Wiegraf in that map, given how much of an offensive monster he is. I would say that's the standard way most people approach that battle.

Another tip that might help you out is a quick usage guide for Agrias. She definitely has a lot of potential and makes the game much easier the first time around. Of all her Holy Knight skills, the only one you really need is Lightning Stab, which has a good combination of range, area of effect, and damage - it's definitely her most consistent skill. Once she knows Lightning Stab, she is actually a little better as a knight with holy sword as a secondary skill for extra damage, but better yet is to get her to Geomancer for the attack up skill. At this point in the game you can buy the Twist Headband and Power Sleeve, which both give +2 physical attack and can let Squires or Geomancers do a lot of damage, but are even better with Geomancer Agrias and her sword arts.

Also, Ninja and Summoner are both great classes and you should definitely try them. Mediator isn't as good, but it does give you the ability to recruit enemy units, which is kind of neat.

the Ninja job class really comes in handy for a certain tricky fight down the line

not that you need it to win but it helps

Yeah I'd already written a lot so didn't focus on the Delita/Ovelia scene but it was really good, nice development for both of them. Ovelia has suddenly become way more interesting since the reveal of her not being a princess. Honestly this game seems to have way better conversations in general than most FFs, especially between protagonists and antagonists. Ramza/Delita, Ramza/Wiegraf, Ramza/Gafgarion, even the minor characters, it's all been really good stuff.

Ahh that makes sense, thanks. The others I've gotten must be from games I haven't played yet.

I might swap my Lancer to a Ninja and see how that goes, and try one of the mages as a Summoner. Agrias has learned all her Holy Knight skills now so I'm free to mess around with her too. Thanks for the tips as always!

Got home from vacation, played FFT 6 hours. I recently watched a speedrun that took 6 hours to complete and I couldn't even get to Fort Zeakden. Though I spent way too much time on random battles and JP grinding, man it's fun. I'm going for classes I never used before, gonna be fun.

Now fueled by a big breakfast (including 2 large coffees), gonna try to fit in a solid 10 to 12 hours today. Vacations are great, lol...

Also so busy that I haven't read andy's updates but I will during my breaktime, just caught this:
