Have you ever heard of the concept of Boltzmann Brains? It's an argument that, if the Universe persisted in a more-or-less recognizable forms (ie, space-time as we know it exists) for long periods of time (like on the order of 10^10^50 years), then, through random thermodynamic fluctuations, fully formed brains would briefly appear in the vacuum, complete with memories. And if one forms, it's all but certain arbitrarily many will form, as the conditions that allowed them to form at all will likely continue for untold eons. Thus, in models of the Universe that allow Boltzmann brains, it's basically certain that they'd vastly outnumber actual humans, and "Cogito ergo sum" stops right there. You're a brain floating in space, briefly hallucinating until you vanish like you arrived.

Scientists recognize that this is stupid, and thus don't like models that allow Boltzmann brains. The simulation theory is a bit like that. Sure, under certain reasonable assumptions and arguments it's nearly certain that we're a simulation, but there's no way to prove it, it's deleterious to our collective psyche and scientific philosophy, and it's dumb in the same intuitive manner that ontological arguments are. It really doesn't deserve a spot in our consciousness unless somebody can somehow test it.

I dont get this argument. Theres infinite room in our collective consciousness! I agree that its almost pointless to determine whether we are or not, even if we could.

Just as far as thought experiments about the nature of our consciousnesses go, please dont go looking up Rokos Basilisk.

My point is that it's like Roko's Basilisk. At best, it's nothing worth thinking about. At worst, it'll freak people out and cause them to lose trust in science or have an existential crisis. I don't necessarily think that that's a *likely* outcome, seeing as it's intuitively stupid and all, but on the list of pointless things to consider, it's on it. And, like pyre said earlier, it's just kind of annoying to deal with and talk about

I don't even really mind that people talk about it because the things that people find interesting aren't necessarily useful in any way and I think that's fine. The irritating thing is when people (no one here, not even the people I was responding to in the last topic) act like because I am a scientist that these hypotheses have anything to do with my work/studies or that I'm for some reason obligated to have an opinion on them

The US Supreme Court already addressed this with Bush v. Gore. It's not a matter of them overruling the PA Supreme Court on PA law. The point is that the US constitution gives the right to select electors to the PA legislature, not to the state of Pennsylvania. So if there is a conflict between the PA legislature and the PA constitution, the legislature wins. This was exactly the mechanism SCOTUS used to overrule the FL Supreme Court in Bush v. Gore.

Can we just point out that the election is getting closer and Biden's lead is growing?

Normally getting closer to election day means the polls tighten, Biden is now up 10.7 points. That's up from a week ago, and up bigly since the beginning of the month.

Every single poll added in 538 has Biden getting at least 50% of the vote for the last 3 days.

Republicans don't care about bipartisan gestures, but independents and moderate Democrats love that kind of stuff. And considering those two groups are more important than progressives for winning elections, it's obvious that Biden will try to please them more. As long as he sticks to relatively sane Republicans and gives them weaker Cabinet posts, it shouldn't even be a huge problem.

Capping for this shit means you guys are either ok with or dont understand that collaborating with a Right that is moving Right means you move right, or stay in place at best.

There is a possible scenario rapidly forming where 2024 is a worse blowout than any in modern history, as the anti-Trump GOP returns to their party enthused to have it back, and the Left says youre on youre own.

Precisely. Disagree on the policy all you want, but by putting Republicans in his cabinet, Joe Biden would normalize what theyve become.

Jeff Flake is being considering because of being outspoken against Trump and choosing not to run in his Republican Party.

Yet he still voted with Trump over 81% of the time:

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/congress-trump-score/jeff-flake/

Why does potentially rewarding this man with power and relevance do for supposed Democratic policy goals?

I'm not sure anything can pull the GOP left.

In any case, putting a Republican in charge of Education is a bad idea. We need someone who will support our public schools. Ultimately, I think it depends on what positions he considers them for. But regardless of what happens, our work (Progressives) isn't done just by getting Biden into office and it never was going to be. Even if Bernie Sanders had been the candidate, our work wouldn't be finished with voting him into office (as much as we'd like it to be). Biden is a tenuous ally at best. That's all he's ever been.

If Biden puts a Republican in charge of education, we should protest it just as much as we did when Trump put Betsy DeVos in charge of it. (And hopefully our Senators will actually listen to us this time). And that's exactly what I plan to do.
