Normal people either liked it or didn't really care about it. It's a completely inoffensive movie, the only people who outright hated it are the people who hated brie Larson specifically. She really triggered a lot of hate when she said she was targeting a different audience than straight white men, and from that point on the part of the internet that complains about sjws locked onto her. They even made videos about her body language as proof that she's unlikeable

I didn't like it that much cause she was too strong. she never really is in danger of failing.

also I can only speculate since I read comics, but for casual people who only watch the MCU, I feel like they probably were annoyed when everyone kept telling them she is supposed to be so powerful yet she just came out of nowhere with no build up. imagine watching a series of movies and then this random new character appears from the blue and you are told they are stronger than anyone else. and you like "who the fuck is this....."

I hadn't heard about that but it's pretty common for women to get told to smile more, and it's generally a pretty sexist thing to say. I'd get annoyed if people told me to smile more.

IIRC her character in the movie even got told to smile by a biker? Kinda weird, I wonder if they added that specifically because of the people doing it to her irl

That can be solved by having a different sect of them. ones that chose their own path.

I do agree though, having them be "heros" or victims or whatever kinda ruined a lot of potential stories.

I didn't like Carol Danvers before the movie came out. My favorite part of her whole deal was when rogue stole her powers.

Which i would support in a future movie. Could bring the xmen in with the avengers with it.

But my personal feelings for the character made me dislike the movie. If she was someone other then Carol Danvers i might have wanted to see it or would have enjoyed it.

The alt-right already hated Brie Larson for being a "third wave feminist" (Whatever the fuck that means.) the moment she was announced. That comment she made happened after they already hated her. It is NOT the reason. It's just fuel to the fire.

Plus, it should be made clear from how the alt-right reacted to Black Panther that they just hate any lead characters that aren't white gentile males. They also lost their shit over Wonder Woman because Gal Gadot is Israeli. (Gee, wonder why THAT bothers the alt-right so much.....) That news coverage just got buried because lolDC.

.....They were also really worried she was going to stomp Thanos in Endgame for some reason. As if they were going to throw out 11 years' worth of setup just to make some girl power statement.

and also the pilot named Marvel.

Mar-Vell is the original Captain Marvel in the comics. (Well, other than Shazam, the TRUE original Captain Marvel.) Granted, Mar-Vell was a male Kree. But he had one of the few comic book deaths that actually stuck, sacrificing himself to stop Thanos. (Which obviously the MCU had someone else lined up to do.) They decided to shrink Mar-Vell's role since he's been dead for decades and Carol Danvers has been Captain Marvel for some time now in the comics. (Same reason we got Sam as the next Captain America and not Bucky. Both have taken Steve's mantle, but Captain Falcon is more recent.) But the origin story is pretty similar. Carol Danvers (who was called Ms. Marvel) did indeed get her powers due to an accident involving Mar-Vell. But it was Mar-Vell's DNA and not the Space Stone that gave her those powers.

You mean the pictured evidence that was debunked as it was an employee cleaning between showings? There's an old thread on the PS4 board about it.

Either way, the pre-opening ticket sales indicate that interest in the movie was high.

I don't really dislike Brie Larson, I guess I've only seen her in a few things...idk but I never had the urge to see Captain Marvel. It just looked bland.

Oh, it had Jude Law, i can't stand that dude.

I think by the time it came out I had started losing interest in the MCU. I watched IW and Endgame, but those were very whelming.

As for her telling the audience for her movie to fuck off based on their skin color and sex, that's a big ol yikes. There are better ways to say what she wanted to say.

I'm also not a big comic nerd, so her being "more powerful" or whatever is a non issue to me, and tbh kind of a bad argument. Her being stronger than Thor is arguable anyways. Thor was the only one who did anything in IW and was obviously weaker in Endgame because he spent 5 years soaking up another person's worth of weigth.

Ultimately I think people spend too much time looking for excuses to be angry, and Brie Larson made an easy target

That is a common criticism of the movie. Similar reason people get irked in Endgame, when Thanos is fighting more than evenly against Thor and Cap at the same time and beat up the Hulk one on one without any infinity stones, but when he headbutts Danvers in the face, she doesn't even flinch.

I haven't seen the movie in a while, but I dont really recall Danvers having much of a character arc. She was basically the same from start to finish. Compared to, say, Thor, who had to learn humility and become a hero on top of just a warrior.

She didn't flinch because by then she had ahold of the IG and was sucking power from it, which Thanos noticed and then countered by Falcon Punching her away with the Power Stone

I dont recall that being suggested or hinted at in the movie. From the look of it, he hit her with a normal powered headbutt and, when it didn't work, he hit her with a power stone charged punch.

Personally, I just thought the plot was mostly dull, as was her character. I didnt think it was a bad movie necessarily... just a bad Marvel movie.

Wonder Woman was a much more fun movie as a whole. Hopefully the Black Widow movie and any Captain Marvel sequels can raise the bar in their own right.

She wasn't taking the power of the IG, she was in Binary mode I think it's called. Which is basically her superpowered state. She got taken out by a direct hit of the Power Stone right after the headbutt.

Well yeah she's supposed to be a bit OP compared to the others. She's basically positioned to be the MCU Superman.

I'm sure she'll face some big threats in future movies anyway. Outside of no selling a single headbutt it's not like she steamrolled Thanos. Which is what people were whining was going to happen for months.

That's one of the best parts of the movie. It's a great swerve from what you'd expect, especially having Ben Mendelsohn playing Talos because he almost always plays villains. It'd be really boring to have two big evil alien empires in the Kree AND the Skrull. Kevin Feige has also outright stated that there are varying Skrull factions so you'll get your evil Skrulls at some point.

1) People dislike her taking the name of the original Captain Marvel.

2) Marvel virtue signaled hard with this one. ("Hey, everybody. Captain Marvel is our strongest superhero ever and a true icon. We're totally not over-compensating for a lack of female superheroes up until this point.")

3) Brie Larsen is pretty toxic in interviews.

4) Yeah, incels are a thing. Even a film like Alien would get a backlash today for daring to have a strong female lead.

5) There were more interesting female characters who could better occupy the Top Female Superhero role. Like, just about any of them.
