Showing a drawing of the prophet should be treated as a hate crime in western countries. Its hate speech towards Muslims. Hate speech is violence.

The last time I checked, most western countries dont treat hate crimes as a capital offence.

As a former Muslim, this is rather silly and would need context, like proof of knowledge and intent to offend, and an obviously offensive caricature to boot. Most of the world does not know en that drawing depictions of muhammad (and this is more towards Muslims than any other group) is "forbidden." And no matter what the drawing, death threats and violence is never justified.

Nine people have been arrested, including the parents of a child at Mr Paty's school, judicial sources are quoted as saying.

Police say the attacker was an 18-year-old man of Chechen origin.

A man wielding a large knife attacked the teacher in the street, cutting off his head. Witnesses are said to have heard the attacker shout "Allahu Akbar", or "God is Greatest".

A picture of the beheaded teacher was posted to social media in the immediate aftermath, but it is not clear if this was by the assailant or an accomplice.

Hate crimes shouldnt be treated with capital offense. The death penalty should be outlawed.

Drawing the prophet and showing it to Muslims with the intent to cause offense should be treated as a hate crime similar to how drawing a swastika to show to Jewish people is punishable as a hate crime.

Like holy shit, I can't imagine it's easy to cut someone's head off. Dude must have been hacking away at it for a while. Fucking insane.

Then you clearly haven't seen videos from the Mexican cartels or old Al-Qaeda tapes (Understandable since not a lot of people would like to see beheadings, I'm mostly desensitized to them after watching dozens). They use this fucking tiny knife, and the head is off in like 6 seconds.

They basically have the sharpest fucking knives in the world.

obviously you probably wouldnt commit a heinous act of violence like this guy did (unless youre a psycho) but you certainly would've been upset. respect other peoples beliefs or this type of shit will continue to happen

Mr Ricard said Mr Paty had been the target of threats since he showed the cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad during a class about freedom of speech, in relation to the Charlie Hebdo case.

Mr Paty, a history and geography teacher, advised Muslim students to look away if they thought they might be offended.

Aside from the horror of this killing, there's powerful symbolism too. The education minister said the root of what happened was "hatred of the Republic".

The passing on of French national values - liberty, equality, fraternity - is seen as a core task of the education system here.

So we should not show the swastika in history classes or in media? Because it's offensive to groups of people that were thrown in concentration camps? Intent doesn't matter? Nuance is dead? Nothing offensive should be visible?

The 48-year-old father, who has not been officially named, is accused of issuing a "fatwa" against the teacher.

He is accused, along with a preacher described by French media as a radical Islamist, of calling for Mr Paty to be punished by issuing a so-called "fatwa" (considered a legal ruling by Islamic scholars).

Interior Minister Grald Darmanin said the two men had been arrested and were being investigated for an "assassination in connection with a terrorist enterprise".
