This was a summer show on CBS for a few years in the early 2010s. I just started watching it to fill the drama void after my LOST watch through. I'm six episodes in. Seems pretty intriguing so far.

Season 1 was excellent. Season 2 was an abomination. I heard Season 3 was okay but they lost me after the premiere.

Season 1 was awesome because it didn't take itself seriously. Season 2 sucked because it took itself seriously.

Didn't bother after that.

Liked the premise, but the execution always felt a bit lacking.

The first episode was pretty decent. S1 went off the rails from there though, so I never gave S2 a chance.

(I do recommend the book.)

I watched all three seasons. It was... a summer broadcast show. I at least appreciated that CBS tried to do something besides just another police procedural. I also watched both seasons of Extant!

After episode 7, a couple thoughts/predictions.

I can't believe Big Jim is actually letting Angie run around town free considering he's already killed three other people who posed some sort of inconvenience to him and is apparently good at making them seem like freak accidents. I mean he knows it would destroy his son if he killed her but it's an uncharacteristic move that is 100% going to bite him in the ass and I think at some point he'll realize that and try to kill or at least re-kidnap her.

I also think at some point someone is going to figure out a way to leave the dome but either:
-not tell people immediately because that would end the story prematurely
-it's impractical/impossible to evacuate everyone that way
-someone (cough the Rennies) sabotage the escape
Something that makes it so that a few characters can leave the dome and explore the outside world, at least temporarily, without resolving the conflict.

Angie literally believes any bullshit lie that anyone tells her and I loved that. She was absurdly gullible.

And Big Jim is basically a cartoon villain. His name is BIG JIM and a car dealer and this is our villain it doesn't get more perfect than that.

But then they stopped having fun in season 2. :(

I've read the book, and I loved the book.

Wait, let me clarify. I loved the first half to two thirds of the book.

And then the ending happened. And then I hated the book.

I hate this book.

.

As a result I didn't bother with the show so I don't know if it's good. 800~ great pages ruined by 300~ "what the hell" pages.

Called it.

And Julia's reaction to finding out Barbie killed her husband was..... very underwhelming.

Yeah seems like it's gonna be as sucky as you all say. I was kinda futilely hoping Angie was alive because she died off-screen-ish, but I knew that was too brutal an attack and with too much blood for a non-Barbie/Julia character to survive.

Well they found their way out. Given that we're still in the middle of S2 this is obviously not the permanent escape, so let's see which of these keeps the story going.

Alternatively - everyone gets out but they get re-trapped in a new dome.

While i agree, this is generally what you get with Stephen King books. An interesting premise with characters that get you invested into a story only for it to shit all over itself on it's way to the conclusion. Pretty much the main reason i stopped reading his books.

I should be pissed that they quickly wasted off Phil at the end of an episode that he had 0 relevance in, but after the shit direction they took him in this season it's probably for the best.

I will say this - Sam has been a decent enough addition to the main cast that I went from "Whoever killed Angie needs to die the worst death ASAP" to "okay, this guy can stick around for a while."

Melanie was in every episode of S2, was a central character, and yet her actress was credited as a guest star and not main cast? Was that like, their way of paying her less?

Barbie killing that douchy carpenter guy with the baseball bat was like, one of the most brutal overkills I've seen in something that wasn't explicitly horror-genre or otherwise a gore-fest. I actually shuddered and said "Oh my God" out loud as it was happening.

Well, unlike the writers, I actually ended up finishing this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DC9xez5pxU

This had so much promise, even considering the second season either killed off or ruined almost every character I liked. But it fell into the same trap that LOST did where it tried to become something truly epic when it was much better off just being about an ensemble of characters figuring out how to survive this event. Unlike LOST, too many characters were not done justice, and it didn't even get a proper conclusion. This would have been so much better if they'd left out all the alien shit and made the conflict about Big Jim's struggle for power, had him be the big bad after all; the town gets destroyed as the dome comes down and, refusing to give up an ounce of power even in the face of doom, the captain goes down with the ship.

Barbie managed to stay (mostly) consistently good and Angie got killed off early enough to avoid getting ruined so those were probably my two favorite characters, with Big Jim and Julia marching in behind them.

Despite Season 2 actually managing to trick me into liking him for a while, Junior was the Goddamn worst.

And now to binge some comedies for a while before I give another "event" drama a shot.

Yeah I remember it getting really "watching for the sake of watching" for a stretch there, but even with that ending and the implied direction of Season 4 I was actually interested and would've watched it? But probably for the best it ended where it did.

The Barbie, Julia, Big Jim trio were great. I don't even remember chunks of Season 3 I guess, when you were posting about the baseball bat beatdown. I guess I only remember bits and pieces here and there really... but always remember Julia, mmm.

I have to recommend - even though I literally don't remember anything about it and maybe I'm overinflating it and surely it ends on an unsatisfying cliffhanger - but "Invasion" was another Lost-follower that ran one season before cancellation. I remember it starred William Fichtner and I didn't watch it when it aired, I binged it some time after and I remember really digging it... but I don't know if it'd still hold up today.

Also gotta recommend, and I don't even know if you can find this anywhere at this point, but "Siberia" was another summer show that aired when Under the Dome started too (so, 2013?). It was a show made to "appear" like it was a reality tv show set in the Siberian wilderness, but then strange stuff starts to happen.... you have to stretch belief a bit that they keep filming it reality-style after a certain point but still, something a little different and a nice twist on a reality tv concept (which I know is your fort!)

I was thinking maybe The 100 next but I'll keep your suggestions in mind.

Another thing that annoyed me was actors who were in most/all episodes in a given season and had significant roles getting credited as "guest stars" instead of with the main cast. Norrie's actress in S1 (though she got promoted to main cast in S2 and 3), Melanie's actress in S2, and Christine and Hunter's actors in S3 really should have been billed with the main cast. Kinda unfair to them.
