VI has to be played, even if it's not altogether your taste

Wrong. The game falls apart in the middle. Tired of seeing it labeled as a must-play FF/JRPG.

6 and 9 are my two least favorites but I know they're actually the most beloved here lol.

Anything else I-X I like no problem.

Last finished: Terra Cresta II (PCE), Moon Cresta (Sharp X68000), Terra Cresta (NES), Dangar - UFO Robo (Arcade), Terra Force (Arcade), Terra Cresta (Famicom).

If there's one thing this topic has taught me, it's that 6 and 9 are more divisive here than I thought! But yes, still the most beloved too, particularly 6.

Started up V, watched the opening sequences and saved as soon as I could on the world map. Will come back to it in like a week and see if the save is still there or if it's not worth bothering with. Will probably start Tactics today or tomorrow though! Might make a topic for that.

8 is the most hit-or-miss game in the series, but you didn't ask about it!

I actually agree FFVI isn't must play as a JRPG. I'd call it a must play for a Final Fantasy fan but you could easily dip your toes in the series with FFVII or FFX instead and go from there based on whetheryou like them. Chrono Trigger is what I'd call a must play (and I greatly prefer FFVI but CT just hits fundamentals like pacing better even if VI has a better cast and plot)

I'm aware how divisive 8 is being a fan myself, I just hadn't thought of 6 and 9 as having many detractors. 6 is often held alongside 7 as the top of the series and 9 still has the 'underrated' label despite being so widely loved now. Of course they both still are wildly popular here, especially 6. After all 6 was dominating this poll before the 5 and CB fanbases arrived (legitimately I'm sure).

I have played Chrono Trigger (though not Cross) and hear it compared to 6 a lot, I know they were released around the same time but I am very interested to see which side of the fence I'll fall on. I liked CT a lot fwiw but it's not 'top tier GOAT way beyond anything else best game ever' level for me.

I'm not a big fan of the romance heavy plot Final Fantasy games, so 8 was a bit of a miss for me. I also wasn't a fan of drawing magic because I got into this stigma where I felt like I should never use magic or I'd lose stats. Similarly, I wasn't as big a fan of X for the romance plot, and I tell myself I probably would have enjoyed it more if Tidus didn't exist (zing!). I did enjoy FFX-II a bit more than X, until the end.

Oh, I don't know that I'd say FFVI is a must-play as an RPG in general, but yeah, you need to play it if you consider yourself a fan of the series.

As someone who didn't play FF6 or CT when they were current, neither game came across as to me as being nearly as good as the hype indicated

I feel that way about a lot of older games though. Games generally have gotten much better as time goes on.

Tbf I haven't played any of the 2D FFs so there's a chance I won't like them. Doubt it though, I like plenty of SNES games. Maybe the NES ones will be rougher.

Potentially a hot take but FF1 is the only NES FF game even remotely worth revisiting. 2 and 3 both have their moments but simply are not worth slogging entirely through. But FF1 has a simplistic charm that still holds up.

I think when 3-DS was announced I still thought "Final Fantasy 3" referred to FF6 :(

my first encounter with FF3 SNES being called FF6 was from looking up Final Fantasy sprites for RPG Maker and I was just confused, wondering if "FF3" got a sequel

You like FF9 so you shouldn't mind FF3-DS's main problem, which is the combat being a bit slower than it should. It's imo the better game if you don't mind that too much.

It's a little silly that this board gives it so much crap for being slow yet loves the heck out of FF9 (which is slower than FF3DS) but what can you do

It's playable. I like the NES FFs a lot. But for example while the NES games had up to 9 enemies you could fight at once, the DS version only allows like 3 enemies per battle, which changes the balancing around quite a bit. And yeah just being a bit of a sloggier experience when compared to the quickness of an actual 2D game.

I think it's hard to think FF1 is good, but then play FF3 on NES and not feel like you're playing an upgraded version. It's the 8bit version of FFV!

FF2 is fun but the whole growth system is wonky as hell.

FF2 had a decent story and characters for 1980-whatever. I had an enjoyable time playing it on the GBA.

Gotta say the only mainline FF before XIII that I actively disliked while playing was III for the DS

So the FFV cart's save has held up from 10 days ago. A good sign I think (the fake Leaf Green I had back in the day didn't last 24 hours), so that will probably be my next FF after Tactics. Though I have other games I want to play too, I finally got Ghost Trick and there's a free 7 day Switch Online trial on My Nintendo that needs to be used by mid-Nov, if only FF was on there! Either way, I still have Tactics to go through for now (which I am enjoying a great deal!).
