One person disliking it doesn't really mean that much...
It seemed like a few people had issues with it and I guess I just assumed beforehand that it was god-tier loved these days, it's basically repping 3D FF itself in this poll (sorry LR and XV) and still getting obliterated by VI and running even with V, which again I didn't expect to do so well.

I do have game pass so I'll def play IX but VI seems the clear priority choice here, and it'll probably be the GBA version assuming it's not too hard to find.

@ the people who voted I/II/III / T/TA/TA2 / spinoffs, which ones in particular were you voting for? Just curious so I get a better sense of what's worth going for in the long run. (Also VI isn't as readily available as I had hoped, how did they never port the GBA version to DS or 3DS or one of the Virtual Consoles or something)

The turbo mode on modern versions should make battles less annoying at least? Idk how they could mess up an ATB system they'd nailed well enough back in IV.

turbo mode might actually be "too fast." I know that just sounds like I'm being difficult, but it's true. The main issue with IX's battle system is the long loading time at the beginning of fights, where the camera has to pan for like 5 seconds before you're able to enter a command. If there was a way to remove this and keep everything else the way it is, then that would be ideal, but turbo mode just speeds EVERYTHING up

also vote stuffing is notorious on this board so beware! ffV is worth a playthrough but it's not better than VI. that being said, if you play it before VI you might like it more, who knows.

Ugh you would've thought they'd just cut the slow loads in the remaster. I'll try it without turbo when I do play it and see how I do. Thanks! And I know there are stuffers but I didn't expect anyone to try and stuff this poll. I mean V was doing well anyway so it could just be a string of 11 consecutive fans >_> Does this board even have 144 Final Fantasy fans?

Goddammit Square/Nintendo, let me buy your products! With that and the SNES classic being so rare/expensive, why on earth have Square let their old classics only be accessible on subpar mobile versions. Do they get a bigger cut that way or something? Ugh.

Well, the playstation versions of the games are still available digitally so you could play them on the PS3/PSP/Vita.

I'd also assume that it would be cheaper to get a physical copy of FF Anthology (and thus be able to play it on a PSX/PS2/PS3) than a legitimate cartridge of the GBA version. Although I've heard that FF5 doesn't work very well on ps2 hardware.

like yeah having load times at all in the psx version is less than ideal when the original versions didn't have them, but they aren't as bad/noticeable as the psx Chrono Trigger was (where they were much longer and didn't have screen transitions to combat) and probably wouldn't be as noticeable to someone who hasn't played them on original cart or on an emulator.

The Anthology PS versions are something I hadn't really considered, that definitely seems easier to get. I could handle them running worse if it's not too bad, where are the loads anyway? If it's location switches that's fine but long loads between random battles may be too much. Colliding's experience does seem to put a damper on that idea.

I'll keep trying for GBA there's definitely carts out there it's just not as available as you'd like, aside from that the other topic's suggestions all seem to be less... official. I really would like to get them properly if at all possible but idk, we'll see how it goes. Alternatively, Square just shove them on the Switch already.

I dont remember exactly how bad the FF loads were but Chrono Trigger had loading for every single battle and every time you opened the menu.

Seems like somebody REALLY wants me to play FFV >_> Well now I don't know if V was doing so well early on for legit reasons or if whoever is stuffing was at it from the start. @ Stuffer, don't hide behind the poll, come promote your game!

I watched a bit of an early youtube clip of the PS1 VI and the pre and post battle loading does look pretty annoying. Shame as PSX versions would be easier to get but I'll keep on the lookout for GBA for now.

Speaking of, I found a very lol fake 'Fivefold pack' of FF games. If only Square was actually this generous!

Yeah probably gonna be! I'm looking forward to it and my expectations aren't super high cos even its fans say it's not really good bc of the plot or anything. I also know nothing about it thanks to it having a way smaller fanbase than VI/IX. Gilgamesh and Exdeath are the only names I know, I will have heard the party member names I'm sure but they aren't coming to mind. And there's a dragon on the logo.
And a celebratory 10 vote bump for FFV in the poll by the mysterious possibly-Not Dave stuffer!

Yeah I should've set it to one vote per IP but I didn't think anyone would stuff this! I mean in theory as lefty joked the VI votes could be stuffed too... Either way V is on its way to me, I can get IX at any time and VI Advance is still elusive as of right now. Might do a playthrough topic for V, not decided yet. If I do I'll definitely try to write less than I did for IV >_>

I guess Tactics would be next after those three but that'd have to be the mobile version as I don't have a PSP. Is that version decent or not really? Looking at the others, LR and XV would be no issue to get, I+II would be GBA probably as would TA so they should be around but maybe not instantly, III DS and TA2 should be easy enough to get, TAY idk but p much nobody voted that, and Crystal Bearers I've seen going for pretty cheap.

The GBA was really the definitive 2D FF machine huh.

I think the mobile version is considered to be better than the PSP version (unless you had a hacked PSP and applied the fan patch) due to there being a bit of lag/slowdown on special moves.

I think WotL version just has a couple extra bonus characters, the main thing that gets people about prefering one over the other is actually the translation, since the original FFT had a machine translation with a lot of typos and the new version is like most of the modern Squenix game translations (like since about FF12 or so) where it's trying to be all flowery and old timey and shakespearean and has a lot of weird awkward romanizations of the names to make them sound fancy and different even if was a simple name. So some people actually prefer the original version because it's more straightforward.

I kinda like the hunt tbh. SNES classic seems cool at launch price but I can't really justify the purchase at what they're selling it for now.

I'd suggest double checking to see if it's a legitimate cartridge just in case. Basically make sure the label looks like the right one and has numbers indented on it, look to see if the "Game Boy Advance" and other text on the cartridge is in the right font and spelled correctly, look inside the cartridge slot and see if the Nintendo logo is printed above the contacts. Also keep an eye out for technical issues like not saving (although I've had problems saving with legitimate carts that I bought brand new when they originally came out, I guess just because they haven't been played in a long time since it went back to saving normally after a while)

Well... ****. Thanks a ton for that advice Crispy, cos I'm not 100% but I think it is indeed a fake. The label looks right, there's no typos and there's a Nintendo logo printed above the contacts, but there's no numbers indented that I can see. (I compared against some for sure legit cartridges I have to see where the indent would be).

I made sure not to use a bucket store and the seller had a high rating, but I've checked more closely now and he has had a couple of neutral feedbacks from people claiming fake cartridges. Dang, I really should've seen that. I'm guessing it'll have saving issues and not work 100% then? I'll see about a refund, again thanks a lot for that advice Mr Crispy it's better to know now than after I started playing (or giving him good feedback).

Welp, back to the drawing board. :(
