We moved in together and she knew I had a dog. We agreed to not let the dog on the furniture. Which is fine she stopped sleeping in my bed when she got too big.

So we moved in two weeks ago and left my dog with my mom until we got settled. Now my gf doesnt want my dog in the bedroom at all, or the kitchen, or the bathroom. So shes trying to confine my dog to a small space in the living room. Our apartment is spacious for a one bedroom but its ridiculous.

my dog is stressed and nervous about being in a new home and I just wanted to put her bed on the floor in the room so she could sleep near us. This caused a huge fight and now Im sleeping on the couch to help keep my dog calm.

nah, I love my girlfriend shes just not that type of dog person. Im not one of those let my dog lick all over my face type people but my dog always bring a smile to my face. Had her for a while and weve been through a lot. Im not going to leave her alone in a new environment. It probably didnt help that she goes to bed around 9-10pm and I go around 1am. So I kinda woke her up with all this lol

Tell her you'll agree to that if she agrees to stay in the bedroom for 48 hours without leaving (aside from bathroom breaks and meals, like the dog) and if she has absolutely 0 complaints regarding that, then fine. but you don't stick a dog in a cage and expect it to be happy.

So did you not discuss the dog and the living space prior to moving in? How did she treat the dog when she was at your place before?

You'll need to work on a compromise and possibly decide if this is a deal breaker for you.

Well this isn't gonna end well. Try sitting down and talking with her.

I'm getting a dog and it will be allowed in my room for night crate sleeping only until it's about 8-10 months. Then the crate will be in the living room. The dog will have access to living room and kitchen only. It won't be allow on beds or couches. I can't imagine limiting it anymore in a house...Since my kids have small toys after a year or so I'll open their bedroom doors so the dog has access in there. I'll just vacuum more often.

Honestly this. I get you love your gf, otherwise you wouldn't have made the decision to move in together but...yeah man. If you decide to ditch your dog for your gf, at least give the dog to a loving owner that'll give the dog the world. Dogs typically live only about 10-15 years and their only job is to love you (unless they're a service or police dog or something) so they deserve the best in that relatively small time frame imo.

Another thing, your girlfriend didn't respect you enough to be honest about how she felt regarding the dog situation. If she wasn't 100% ok with the dog living there (she's clearly not), she should have been up front about it. This is anoter red flag.

Ive seen this play out and get it - but eventually they changed their mindset.. it just so happens it took almost an entire lifetime for them to do so but they really came from the poorest of the poor so I get it

If she has an issue with the dog even after you talk then move on. The dog came first into your life. If you give in she'll know going forward she has the upper hand with you. Don't be a doormat. If you guys break up then you'll find someone better and hopefully a dog person.

Why would you move in together if the dog was an issue? That should have been resolved first.

I'm cool with no furniture as I plan to do the same. But limiting a dog only to a certain space in a living room is kinda sad. Can it walk down a hallway or something? If she doesn't like the dog hair well just vacuum often though I won't be surprised if she doesn't wanna vacuum often. Also dog hair in the kitchen can get in food, so yeah.

I'm neurotic about dogs on furniture as well, but my wife and I compromised by letting the dog go on one of our couches but not the other, and everyone is happy.

The fact your gf wants to restrict the dog out of the kitchen and bathroom is asinine. I understand bedroom too, since we don't let our dog in their unattended as well, but your gf is absolutely the bad guy here.

Maybe try going to bed also around the same timeframe as this will help the dog sleep on a set schedule. I'd consider as I mentioned sitting down and communicating stuff. If that doesn't solve the issue then something has to go.

This. But remember to the dog, she literally won't understand the conflict, if you didn't choose her, the only thing she know is you abandoned her, betrayed her. You suddenly leave the pack and never return for some reason.
