Watched Veronica. Same director as REC. It was decent. Nothing mind-blowing. But loosely based on a true story.

Vernica is just so good at capturing the early 90s in Spain, I could relate a lot. Plus it has maybe the most terrifying line I've ever seen in a horror movie:

When her friend tells her she said she would die the following day

Like I just shivered so much thinking how I would react if that happened to me.

DAY 26.1: Lovecraft Country (TV Series)
On HBO Max

This series is so hard for me to rate. This is Black-centric TV show with a majority black cast and I really enjoyed it.

Lovecraft Country is a show set in the 1950's that follows a man who returned from the military in a batshit crazy world of monsters and magic and madness.

So here's what I really love about this series. The effects and CGI are amazing. I haven't been as impressed by the special effects and CGI quality of a TV series since Legion. But you can tell they threw a lot of money into this show.

The scares are really, really well done. Just the outright insanity and range of insane monsters to disgusting magic BS to... Well, a lot of other things. They do a great job being terrifying when they want to be.

The series feels almost like an anthology show, but it progresses the plot each and every episode. It's extremely impressive how they do this and, more or less give focus to each character. But one episode you have a monster show, the next is a haunted house, the next is jumping through time, the next is grotesque body horror, and then an episode set in Asia with Asian horror elements. It keeps each episode completely fresh and exciting while still giving you progression to the overall plot. It's so damn good in that aspect.

The acting is also outstanding and, for the most part, the plot is really, really strong and fun to watch.

Where I think it suffers is that I think the protagonist kinda sucks. I don't like him and I don't know how we're really supposed to like him. It really weakens the show a lot, honestly.

I think sometimes the script gets a little hokey. That isn't to say it's bad, but it feels very hokey sometimes and I just have to give it a weird look like... You really went with this dialogue?

And while I like the anthology format, I also feel some episodes (even ones I like a lot!) introduce stuff and then... It's kind of nothing after that. You also get kind of whiplash from the plot sometimes in terms of how different everything is.

Overall, this show is absolutely well-done and I recommend it for anyone looking for a fun horror show. It does everything you need with a unique flavor of a mostly black cast. There's some really impressive stuff in this show.

DAY 26.2: Slumber
On Amazon Prime

I mean it has Maggie Q but that's about all it has going for it.

Slumber is about a doctor who specializes in sleep paralysis trying to help a family out that are all having sleep paralysis.

atleastyoutried.jpg

It has some solid ideas, but the execution sucks, the script sucks, and you don't really enjoy the characters. The scares aren't particularly scary, but they could have been. One character is introduced in the nth hour that's terrible and annoying.

It's just a film that doesn't get horror, I think. A strong cast tries to act their way through it, but you just struggle to care. Nothing really makes this movie standout. And the ending is such a downer I don't know why they went with that.

I don't recommend this movie. It kinda sucks.

DAY 26.3: Eyes Without a Face
On HBO Max

This is a French horror movie made in 1960. And it feels like it.

Eyes Without a Face is about a surgeon whose daughter became scarred and as a result, he lures victims into his home to perform skin grafts on his daughter as she slowly begins to lose her sanity.

Back in the day, this was probably terrifying. Today? It's a slow movie. Not a bad movie by any stretch, but it's still slow. I see why it has so much acclaim though. It's legitimately a great, simple story!

I enjoyed watching it, even if I was bored at parts, simply because it was so well done. The body horror aspects were outstanding as well. All of this culminates into a perfect conclusion, honestly, and it's obvious to see why it influenced a lot of people, including Michael Myers's mask in Halloween!

It's a classic, but it does feel dated. Not much scary here, but there's enough here to make a good narrative.

I recommend it if you want to see a horror classic.

DAY 26.4: Host
On Shudder

You guys may have heard of Host as the post-pandemic Zoom-recorded movie. It's like Unfriended, but actually legitimately awesome.

Host is about a group of friends going on Zoom to have a virtual sance that goes very wrong.

That's really all the movie is about. This movie started filming and was put on Shudder in 12 days. The director held workshops for the actors on how to perform each, for lack of a better word, stunt.

What we get is a movie that doesn't do all of the idiotic melodramatic and story-based nonsense like Unfriended and some of the absolutely blitheringly stupid kills and stuff that happens (and I say that actually enjoying Unfriended). It's just straight up delivering scares, kills, and spooky Zoom-related shenanigans.

The thing that makes this so good is how effectively everything is filmed. For a movie created in twelve days. With a cast of literal nobodies. From a nobody director. Like I don't know how they could have possibly done the stunts they did to make this work. I really don't know. But they're just so good.

It's legitimately just unsettling to watch and becomes scary because I use Zoom and Teams all the time at work now. So I'm kind of used to this. But damn. This is just a movie you should watch if you liked Unfriended and want something better, or you want to see just a spectacle of horror movie stunts done before your very eyes by 100% amateurs in every sense of the word.

It clocks in at less than 1 hour, but they pack everything in there that it's just so fun to watch and enjoy while also getting scared. I was just in awe watching it. I was going to re-watch Unfriended but I feel like there's no point now. Host is such a superior movie that I'll just end up groaning at how inferior Unfriended is.

Huge, huge, huge recommend for Host.

Rating: 8.5/10

PS - This has the best end credits I've ever seen, ever. It cannot be topped.

Recommend: Brightburn
On Starz

Brightburn is a story of if Superman's childhood went completely wrong. A couple finds an alien child crash landed by their farmhouse and proceed to raise him as their own. Eventually, he begins acting strangely and then... well, you can probably figure it out from there.

This movie is actually freaking terrifying. A child Superman with powers to do whatever he wants with the mentality of a child is chilling, and this movie does everything effective with it. This movie is done so well, and you can even check out the trailer for that if you don't want to take my word for it. Brightburn does such an effective job and the story is gripping all until the very end. It's honestly incredible how well-done this movie is and I was shocked it was so good.

Go out of your way to watch Brightburn, especially if you like superheroes. You won't be disappointed.

I had mixed feelings about Brightburn.

On one hand, the concept is great and I wouldn't even be opposed to expanding on the universe from the ending.

On the other hand, there was no indication that he couldn't talk to his parents, mom especially, about anything, so how did things get so bad so quick? The only thing I could come up with is that he was a sleeper agent, and the ship triggered his activation, and that he was going to be evil regardless of how well he was raised and answers were given to him.

I think the point of the movie was to ape off the Superman ideal with stuff like Red Son.

That "He was bred to be good because he grew up in a wholesome family, but if he grew up somewhere like Communist Russia he would have grown up evil."

Brightburn instead tries to play off that expectation that there is good to him, but there really isn't and he's just an alien murder machine meant to take over the planet.

Movie #27, My Bloody Valentine (1981). Kind of an odd movie in that it's about as straight an 80s slasher as can be for most of its run, then the last 45 minutes or so changes settings and decides to get interesting, lol

DAY 27: Black Christmas (1974)
On Youtube - For Free!

This movie is about as good as you can get for what is regarded as the original modern day slasher movie (something I knew going in actually!).

Black Christmas is about a deranged psycho hiding in the attic of a sorority house who begins murdering people inside. Oh and it's Christmas time.

This is a very effective movie at what it sets out to do. It's a disturbing, creepy portrayal of an unhinged murderer hiding right above a group of people he's systematically killing. He makes phonecalls, shrieking and yelling obscene things. The killer, named Billy, is freaking terrifying.

I think this can only be compared to Halloween only to an extent. I think they are such different movies, despite both being slashers and despite Halloween being inspired by a lot of Black Christmas. For one, Michael Myers is just a silent murderer. He's the polar opposite of Billy in every way. He doesn't hide unless he's making a kill. He's undeterred. He's an imposing threat in front of your eyes. Billy, on the other hand, is a raving, spitting psychopath. You never really see him, and he's more or less faceless, but he's just not really Michael Myers at all.

I also feel, as a film, Black Christmas feels more like a modern day popcorn slashers, cracking jobs and being more comedic at times while Halloween doesn't really go out of its way to be funny. They want you to feel a lightened load for Black Christmas before digging in the dagger deep. And we're meant to be terrified of this unseeable threat from Billy, whereas in Halloween we see Michael Myers directly and see the absolute monster he is.

But that's enough about comparing, because I feel like I'm negatively portraying Black Christmas. But it's an excellent movie and I loved watching it. I recall seeing only part of this before, but it's a hell of a movie and a classic for good reason. They create tension and fear extremely well and throw in the comedy to keep you at ease before it ratchets up everything.

My only criticisms is that anything that didn't really involve the killer didn't draw me in very much, and I felt like it wasn't as tightly wound as I would have liked.

Aside from that, it's a satisfying, twisted movie with a good ending. Yeah, I recommend it bigly. Especially if you want to see where a ton of slasher movies drew their inspiration from.

Rating: 8.5/10

Side-rant: This makes Black Christmas 2019 so much more confounding. They replace Billy with a misogyny cult, throw magic BS in there, and that was supposed to be a not-so-subtle allegory for misogyny as opposed to Billy just very clearly being an embodiment of it? I really liked the director's New Year, New Me movie too, but I have no idea why she felt this movie would be good with this concept. I haven't seen it yet, but I haven't heard a single person say anything positive about it which is pretty telling.

I won't even discuss the 2006 version since that one just outright sucks because it sucks everything good out of this one.

I've probably watched ten horror flicks this October, and Host is up there with the 1931 Frankenstein as my favorite. Damn that was a fun movie! Perfect for a Halloween get together with friends. Two things I particularly loved:

  • Short as fuck, never overstays its welcome (again, perfect movie with friends)
  • They still follow Covid safety guidelines lmao

I'm excited to watch it with my girlfriend since I think she'll get a kick out of it too, especially since she does a lot of Zoom calls and stuff at her job now.

I'm glad I was able to help you find some good stuff to watch! I just happen to have a ton of time to watch horror movies this month and I've been having a blast re-watching and watching new stuff, especially movies I've put off watching a lot.

DAY 27.1: Sinister
On Peacock

So okay guys, I will go ahead and just tell you all that I probably love Sinister more than most people do. Because I LOVE this movie.

Sinister is about a crime writer who moves his family into a house where the murder of a family takes place in order to see if he can write a new hit novel. When he moves in, he finds a super 8 projector and films that depict the murder of families.

Excuse me while I gush about Sinister for a bit. I think this movie is brilliant. Absolutely freaking brilliant. I don't know where to start with this movie, so I'll just pick something.

I love how utterly creepy the super 8 films are. The graininess of them combined with the realistic snuff-style murders of the families is just so bone-chilling. It all looks so authentic and real, especially when they show the happy families before their terrible murders. I think this is just such an amazing idea. This is what makes the movie stand out to me. Very few things have really made me feel so unnerved like those.

Just the way this movie is filmed in general is a masterpiece. Scott Derrickson is so good at what he does and this movie just comes across so damn real at all points and leaves you so unsure and uneasy all the time. They hit you with unrelated scares, creepy scares related to the films, and even the jump scares are so properly placed to keep your heart racing and make you never feel safe in scenes where you think you know what's up.

And I love the plot. I love the real life struggle of this man who is trying so hard to make a novel at the cost of moving his family into a murder house and the drama that comes out of that. But what's better is the mystery around these movies. It's so greatly paced and each piece brings you closer and closer, but you never quite get it until the very end. Watching this movie as a story about a desperate author first and spookiness second is just great storytelling. But when you add in a layered and deep mystery involved with grisly murders that leaves you guessing, you just can't help but feel so interested in how it ends.

Even seeing this movie as many times as I have, when I get to the last 10-15 minutes when everything starts to unravel and they hit you with all of the turns of the story to explain it all, and then leads you into such a satisfying conclusion that wraps every single thing up perfectly, god damn. It feels good. You never know what you're expecting and I still feel so unsettled, even now, watching the conclusion of this film.

I think the soundtrack is among the best horror soundtracks as well. This uses an industrial sound, mixed with projector-like sounds in a somber yet aggressive tone. It adds a bizarre wailing in some that sounds so inhuman. The sound usage in this movie is great too, just with that damn projector among other things. It's no wonder this movie is able to keep you on edge so much with this soundtrack.

To me, this movie is amazing. I know some people don't feel as strongly about it as I do, but I just love watching this movie and still catching tiny things each time I watch it, and finding something new to appreciate about it.

I will always recommend people watch Sinister. It does so many unique and well-thought out things with the plot that can grip you so hard. This may be my wildcard 10/10 score, but it's one I'll always stick by. I think it's just a brilliant film from every stage.

But I plan on watching the second one again to see if so can give it a second shot! I've watched the first Sinister at least 8 times now at this point. DAY 27.2: Friday the 13th (1980)
On AMC

So okay, Friday the 13th is a series that I really never loved, but I enjoyed well enough I guess? They all sort of blend together for me....... except for this one. And I will end up spoiling this one, so if you don't know the major difference between the first movie in the series and the rest, go ahead and stop reading.

Camp Crystal Lake has MURDER happen after a young boy drowns 21 years prior. But then they try to re-open the camp and then all the counselors start to get murdered.

It's been forever since I watched the original movie. It's kind of boring through the first part... and honestly pretty unremarkable until you get to the end. Last chance for spoilers!

Jason's Mom is the killer in this one, and she's completely unhinged and performs her role perfectly. She's a delight to watch, honestly, being a psycho with a large knife. She's the best part of this movie by far.

That said, I kinda hate how this is all set up. We do POV shots and cut away each time anything is going to happen until we see the victims' corpses all flopping about to scare the final girl. It's just not a great way to do it, but when you get to the killer reveal, you get why. If it weren't for the reveal, this movie would suck. Full stop. But it improves so much after that. I wish they gave us a little bit more before that.

It's a clever movie in that it tricks you into thinking it's Jason for the whole movie. It's a great little campfire story redirection. It's just that the movie isn't great until we get towards the end. But I kind of really appreciate it once it gets there?

But the music in this movie is a hell of a lot better than I remember. It's all so iconic with striking string instruments at perfect times. It does make it all feel a lot better and stand out.

I would say it's worth watching from Jason's Mom onward, just to see how the original ended up playing out. It's just so different from the maniac machete-wielding Jason Vorheese we're all used to, because the most action you get in this movie is an older woman with a knife. And that's kind of funny in retrospect. I score it as high as I do entirely because of the storytelling and the back end of the movie.

Rating: 6.5/10

Debating whether or not to watch the remake or the second film after this in the next few days. I'm thinking the second movie because I want to be reminded of just how different it is from the first film. And also because the remake is kinda bad.

DAY 28: Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight
On Netflix

Man, the Polish don't fuck around with their horror movies.

Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight is set in a Polish camp for kids addicted to technology. But when they get there, they are being hunted down by a deformed, grotesque man.

Like I mentioned, this is a Polish movie and it's your standard camp killer movie, but with an added twist of no technology and weird teen drama. It surpassed my low expectations honestly, as the kills were all unique and they subverted your expectations. I was pretty surprised actually at how much they took scenes in a direction I didn't expect.

It's clearly a love letter to the genre, and the grotesque killer is just horrific to see on top of being really good at murder. The teen drama kinda sucked for the most part and I couldn't begin to care about anyone's individual story. It was more of a horror popcorn flick for me.

Not really much else to say. I recommend it I guess if you want to see a camp killer movie, because it does a good job of that.

Not really horror, but you should check out One Cut of the Dead since you have Shudder.

Just don't look up anything about it ahead of time.

DAY 28.1: The Other Lamb
On Hulu

So this movie is the shits.

The Other Lamb is about an all-female cult with a male at the head of it and he's not very nice.

This movie sucks, there's nothing happening in it, and it has very scarce horror stuff and it's sooooooo boring. I don't care about this abusive dude leading these women because everything is boring.

The dumbest part of this is that when it does have horror stuff or the abusive guy does some heinous shit, it's mostly just them all staring in shock until the very last thing.

I can't stress how uninteresting this film is. And it really, really is. Nothing about the story is powerful or impactful despite their best intentions.

Don't watch The Other Lamb. It gets half a point for at least having good acting.

Recommend: Scream Queens (TV Series)
On Hulu

Yo guys Scream Queens is an awesome horror parody show. It follows an over the top sorority dealing with a killer in their college.

It's just a hilarious show with a ton of funny characters. I absolutely loved watching each episode. Season 1 is amazing, but Season 2 ends up being not as good, mostly because they did run some jokes into the ground. I think it's absolutely worth a watch it you want to watch something take the piss out of horror movies.

Also you've probably seen a bunch of gifs of Emma Roberts that come from the show.

DAY 28.2: The Ring
On IMBD TV (for free! Just use Amazon Prime!)

Man, I love The Ring. This movie might be what really got me obsessed with horror movies.

The Ring is about a cursed VHS tape where the viewer dies in 7 days. But can Naomi Watts solve the mystery and stop the curse!?

I don't have a lot of negative things to say about this movie. The Ring does so much good, but Naomi Watts deserves a ton of praise for going all in on a movie and a premise that, on its face, is just laughable.

But The Ring takes this ridiculous concept and fills you with dread, from the start, by giving you a horror cliche of stupid kids doing stupid things (omg as a high schooler THAT WAS JUST LIKE ME) and then, you know, they die. And then it brings you in with the mystery and keeps stringing you along. An outright bizarre film on that VHS tape with hidden meanings. Strange occurrences. Stranger gross stuff. What in the hell can it all mean?

All, of course, with the impending doom. You know when it's coming. It's just a count down until the final moments as they unravel the twisted puzzle.

I feel like I don't need to dance around spoilers, but I guess I ought to. But the conclusion to this film is legendary. The build up is insane. It delivers on so many levels.

It's just an awesome mystery that is done to perfection. It really is a special movie. I don't know that it can be matched.

The Ring Two is the shits though. Just terrible, and I don't know how that got made. Rings was alright, but it wasn't anything as special as the first American film.

But The Ring? Man, watch that one forever. The biggest recommends if you've somehow never seen it.

DAY 28.3: Still/Born
On Shudder (And I believe Free on Youtube)

This is a movie that was freaking powerful stuff.

Still/Born is about a mother who had twins, but one didn't survive. She then deals with post-partum depression while a demon is trying to take her child.

Christina Burke plays the mother in this movie and she absolutely kills it. She does such an amazing job and it's just so impressive how much she killed it. I hope she gets more work.

But as for the movie itself, it's mostly carried by her acting. A lot of things that happen are similar to your standard ghost movies like Poltergeist and whathaveyou. I was just kind of like "This is pretty good." But man. Right before the third act, things get really, really, really freaking good.

The third act of this movie is done so well. The plot comes together in such a huge way during that part and you just find yourself on the edge of your seat. The conclusion in particular is outstanding. I was ready to give it an alright score, but the third act changes that entirely. It rockets it up to something really, really good and worth watching.

The postpartum depression part is also what makes this feel more unique, and everything about it feels so real. The dialogue in this film feels the most natural, which makes when shit gets real feel even more natural. Just an exquisite script that makes this movie worth watching.

Check out Still/Born! I think you can even watch it for free on Youtube! But it's great! SHUDDER WINS YET AGAIN!

You should probably check out Sadako vs Kayako. It's not exactly a *good* movie or anything, but it is completely ridiculous. And the fight itself doesn't go in a way I thought it would

Yeah, if you go to Prime and search for it, I believe there are two you can pick. One says IMDBTV Free With Ads.

Actually, I just realized I can share the link! If you want to watch The Ring for free, here it is! I don't know if you need Prime or not.

Also, they have some really solid movies there. If you filter a search to IMDBTV they're all free. The Descent is on there too which I may or may not watch too, and frankly anyone should watch because it's an amazing movie.

DAY 29: Friday the 13th Part II
On AMC

So now we get to Jason Voorheese in his prime!

Jason Voorheese kills people at Camp Crystal Lake. That's literally the movie.

First, remember when I said that it's only worth watching from Jason's mother onward? Well, they give you a 7 minute summary of the movie from that point onward at the start of this one! Although you do miss out on some excellent acting for Pamela Voorheese if you skip the first one.

This movie is distinctly different in that they outright show the murders and whatnot. But there's frankly nothing else to it. The campers are more interesting this time around, I guess. Jason's got a sack head instead of the hockey mask and he's a big fan of flannel.

I honest to goodness don't even know what to say about this movie. It has good kills. It set forth what the franchise would be more like for the rest of the film. But... it's still a very, very typical slasher with an added bonus of the ending being an interesting take on the genre.

I liked it well enough. Like I said, all of the Friday the 13th movies sort of blend together to me. I really just don't have much to say about it. But it does a good job on lore building in this movie and the soundtrack is still outstanding. It feels dated, but I also feel like I need to give this a similar score to the first movie since they're both roughly the same in terms of quality, but in different ways.

Just watched The Gallows: Act 2. Not horrible, like the original, the ending is it's best part, but in this particular case, I feel it also kind of crushes everything before it and becomes it's own worst part of the movie as well.
