I'm actually saving those to watch with my girlfriend. She wanted to watch Evil Eye in particular since she's Indian and it's an entirely Indian-made production about Indian culture.

I've heard they're all pretty good to really good in terms of quality.

Btw how I thought headcount should have ended.

The main character calls his brother and leaves a voicemail as he does, calling 5 times to do so. Cuts to the brother eventually. He sees he has 5 missed calls and a voicemail. We see him listening to the voicemail. He turns around and we see the main character. The brother says hey you didn't call me a bunch of times and leave me a voicemail saying you needed my help did you because it all just came through? The main character responds I don't think so at least not any time recently. The brother laughs and says I was gonna say because we have been together the whole time and it said to come to where I came to see you yesterday but I was with you. That's so weird. The brother laughs and grabs him by the shoulder while the main character laughs and slightly smirks. Meaning that the brother never showed up at the house the night. It was the creature. And the creature was also haunting his brother as well. And it would also fit with the instapic his brother posts of them both together.

I did it. I got two people to watch Head Count. Complete victory. Now if I can get someone to watch ALL OF THESE AWESOME SHUDDER MOVIES, I'm in business.

DAY 16.1: Spiral
On Shudder

Guys. I cannot stress to you how much Shudder is worth it, even for one month, to watch some of these awesome horror movies. I haven't had one miss, and I think this is the best Shudder original I've watched because holy shit, THIS MOVIE IS GOOD.

Spiral is about a gay couple that moves into a neighborhood with their daughter. One of the men has a past with homophobia and being targeted, and when he sees their neighbors acting strangely, he begins to think there's something sinister going on.

Holy fucking shit, what a movie. I was absolutely blown away by this film. Let me start by saying this is overall a really refreshing story because it deals with gay issues in an outstanding way. It's a horror story integrated perfectly into a crisp narrative where it doesn't feel at all like it's an out of place thing added in. But it's also not the driving narrative here. It's about a couple who each have issues and are trying to deal with it as they raise their daughter.

The acting is AMAZING in this movie. Blew me the fuck away. This had a bunch of nobodies in it, but they were all just so damn good.

And the directly is completely superb. I would not have believed this director is on his, I think, second real movie. This is his second movie and he's somehow got more talent than all of these people making horror movies in Hollywood right now. This fucking guy, Kurtis Davis Harder, is 26 years old but a master. So many scenes were just put together perfectly. So many memorable shots here.

As the movie was going on, I was like "Alright, I'll probably give this a 7." But then I was like "Okay, 7.5." Then I said "8." And then by the time it was over I said "9, solid 9." I know I just gave Alien a 9, and I'm just here like "Yeah, I'm giving Spiral a 9 too."

This plot is superb. Like, you think you're getting a generic "couple moves in and whoops weird neighbors I wonder what will happen." You aren't. Not even close. This last act is fucking incredible. It's just so good. So much horror, so much tension. So damn good, and the movie built up to this so well.

Get Shudder. Watch Spiral. This is bound to be better than the shitty Saw reboot that's coming out with the same name.

Wait a fucking minute. Sleepaway camp.

so i went into this knowing she was the killer. But, wtf did I just watch. Like it was hilarious how so out of nowhere some shit was but I think the movie literally tried to lie to you. When she goes to kill Judy I think her name is, I am pretty sure they showed a picture of her cousin. And am I imagining this or did they stick a little curling iron in a no no place? That said. The ending caught me literally out of nowhere. That was a wild ending. Lol

I was going to recommend The Wailing but since you've already watched it I will confirm it's fucking amazing

there's almost no wasted scenes, everything is done with purpose and the suspense literally builds as the movie goes along and you never know the final direction it will take you because there's just so many different looks that it keeps you guessing until the last 5 minutes of a 2.5 hours movie

I don't usually get spooked from horror movies but that ending had me keep my lights on for the next two days after watching it

Ayyy glad someone else appreciates The Wailing! Everything you said is totally true, Granzon. It's a masterpiece. The build up is just... I don't know, I feel like it was paced so perfectly that is did allow for you to continually be guessing how this movie goes literally the entire time. And then the payoff for all of that is totally worth all of the tension, because you never feel cheated, you never feel jerked around unfairly. You just have a wonderfully done movie.

Like I said, it's my favorite movie I've watched so far. So I implore everyone to check it out! If you're a horror movie fan, you owe it to yourself to watch it when you have 2.5 hours to sit down and do so. My girlfriend wants to watch it with me and I told her "I need a month or so before I watch this again." But I'm excited to see stuff that I may have missed, knowing how the movie goes this time.

So anyway, we're going to stop talking about ART and talk about a schlocky slasher.

DAY 16.2: Sleepaway Camp
On Peacock

I have never actually seen the entirety of Sleepaway Camp. I don't know why, but I never actually saw the whole thing. And it was so long ago that I barely remembered the majority of it. But you know? I think it does some stuff well.

Sleepaway Camp opens with a child and her father being murdered in a horrible boating accident. Skip forward some time and the child who survived ends up going to a camp with her protective cousin! But then, you know, murder starts to happen. You get it.

In many ways, this is a standard slasher flick. I think it does some creative and grisly stuff with it too. It doesn't just rely on standard slasher fare. It does some clever stuff. And it does a good job building up the kills. Because when this movie gets to its final act? Holy hell all of those murders are increasingly more horrific and brutal until the very end.

And yes, if you've heard anything about Sleepaway Camp, it's probably that the ending is next level terrifying. It's honestly a movie that might be pretty forgettable if it didn't have such a strong last act and, more importantly, such a traumatizing last minute. It's a completely special movie entirely because when you get there... everything goes so fast and you're just mouth agape in terror as you take in this image. If you've never seen it, don't spoil yourself. Just go and watch.

The acting is bad, yeah. But we have a fun movie here still as far as slashers go. The strong last act is what carries it to being something that stands out though.

DAY 8.1: The Beach House
On Shudder

So okay, Shudder has blown it out of the park so far out of the two originals I've watched. I'm honestly shocked by the quality of this movie.

The Beach House is about a college couple that stays at one of their parents' beach house. They discover that a couple was living there--it's friends of the parents. They end up partying one night, with edibles hitting them all harder than they expected.

I honestly don't want to give up much more than that, but I'll tell you to go in expecting a body horror movie that is fucking disgustingly good at some points.

The budget for this is shoe-string, but it's done so amazingly well despite that. The effects and make-up were crafted in such a way to just completely engross you into what you're watching. I had to just turn away at parts it was so nasty, but so effective.

The plot is super simple, and you know what? That's fine. It reminds me of really old school horror movies that are just following a few random people as they try to survive something that is much bigger than them. Think a 50's or 60's kind of feel. But the movie is slow at first, deliberately, to give you a lot of the groundwork for the subtext they throw at you as the movie continues.

I don't know what else to say but that this is a simple, enjoyable, and grotesque ride. I definitely recommend it.

Rating: 8/10

This is a Shudder Original. Shudder has great stuff. If you follow this topic because you really like horror movies, give it a shot. You won't be disappointed.

I feel for you brother. lol It's a Shudder exclusive, so you'll need to watch it there! That other movie was the shits though.

DAY 16.3: Trick 'r Treat
On AMC

This is a movie I've been meaning to watch. It's a series of shorts that all mingle within one another. I usually avoid those because... I dunno. I don't have a good reason. But I've heard this one is really good. And it is.

Trick 'r Treat follows multiple stories about people who decide not to follow the rules of Halloween. As such, there is a boy in orange pajamas and a sack head who is there to watch and punish people who break these very important rules.

This is by all intents and purposes, a really good movie. It has a bunch of small, clever stories that do end up coming together pretty nicely. It's overall just entertaining, start to finish, and the different stories do end up making it feel fresh throughout while also giving a sense of cohesion.

The cinematography is really good for these, and the effects for a lot of parts are pretty top notch as well. It's hard to really give it a proper ringing endorsement aside from saying it's a fun movie. It has a cult following for a reason.

I do recommend Trick 'r Treat, which they've finally been able to get really close to finally making a sequel for. Probably doing it with all of that Godzilla: King of the Monsters money (which, I don't know if you consider that a horror movie, but I fucking love it and you should watch it anyway!). But yeah. fun movie.

DAY 17: The Bye Bye Man
On Netflix

So we all know this movie sucks.

The flick opens with a man killing his neighbors because they told each other something. And then it jumps to the present where a group of 20 somethings move into a place and The Bye Bye Man is written on a piece of furniture, and up reading it and telling his buddies about it, they begin to be haunted by a horrible man in a hoodie.

This movie sucks. It has a pretty good opening, but then they just kind of do the worst thing they could by making the characters such bland, boring nothings who edge on unlikeable. That alone puts you out of this movie.

It's just not compelling, you know? There's nothing that really hooks you into the movie, even if it does have some pretty good scenes. It's just creepy hoodie man making people see stuff and it's just... not interesting? Even the idea that there's a supernatural force that if you think about it, it will kill you and you can't let it spread isn't a terrible idea. I'm sure you could do something with this and make it good.

It just kind of loses when you have the protagonist as this fucking loony that you don't ever really root for, and the absurdity of it sometimes just makes you laugh more than anything. The conclusion of this movie doesn't even make any sense either. They keep playing up The Bye Bye Man as this malevolent evil that will surely kill you dead, and everyone acts horrified when they see him. Except... SORRY TO SPOIL THE FUCKING BYE BYE MAN FOR YOU BUT WE'RE GOING HERE. He doesn't actually kill anyone in this movie. So we have a film in which... he just looms menacingly and gets close to touching people, but he never does. So it's like, what the fuck is the point? If you close your eyes and don't do anything then how does Bye Bye Man do shit to you? Like at least show him actually hurting or giving people indescribable torture or something.

It's a sloppy movie, is all it is. It never really lands anywhere or does anything special. It's pretty predictable as well. I don't recommend it. It's not even that funny. It's just... nothing. But it does a couple good scares and it's at least not a painfully boring as, say, When a Stranger Calls.

Also, I went to look up the credits song after this because it was actually a nice, haunting song (Train Song, if you're interested in checking it out), and the comments are just filled with people talking about how awesome The Bye Bye Man is. It was jarring, to say the least, and I'm surprised this has some kind of audience because it's just really bad.

Rating: 2/10

Also, this is the best thing this movie ever created and it's the funniest shit that makes me laugh every time.

DAY 17.1: The Gallows: Act II
On Hulu

Erm... this is better... I guess...?

This sequel is about a girl who has aspirations to be a star actress, and her family all says that's stupid and she sucks at acting. She underwhelms in acting class until she finds The Gallows, and then she kills her audition. But then creepy noose-related shenanigans happen with a hooded executioner fella!

So let me start by saying this: If you have a shitty movie, I will forgive it so many times over if you make me give a shit about at least one character. And this does it. So that, right there, absolutely makes this a better film than the first. The protagonist goes through a whole arc in this movie as she tries to become a great actress and build her Youtube channel and get people to believe in her and like her, because her family always puts her down. This part is actually done well, I thought. The actress they got is a nobody who does a good job with the role.

Oh, and this is important. This is not found footage like the last one. There are parts where you see it through the POV of a camera like the opening and then on her Youtube channel/webcam. But aside from that, we have a movie that benefits so much from ditching the found footage aspect.

The plot is actually pretty good.......... until it just careens off a cliff, and they keep trying to grab a ledge, but it keeps falling, and they grab a branch and scream "Please, help me up!" and then the director just says "Nah fam" and then it plunges off a cliff entirely.

What I mean to say is that this movie is kind of a narrative disaster, and when you get to the end of the movie you're left going "Now I have questions." And there are no good answers for any of them. It just... does not make a whole hell of a lot of sense, and they really should have figured something out, especially when this was sitting complete but unreleased for like two years.

Like I tried really hard to figure it out incase I missed something, and then I watched the FoundFlix guy explain the movie (check out his channel! It's really good!) and he was equally confused. So I said "Alright, if Mr. FoundFlix can't figure it out, it makes no sense."

Some legitimately good scares. The protagonist is really good, and her personal growth story is also good. But the plot is just a mess.

DAY 17.2: Coherence
On Amazon Prime

I fuckin' love Coherence

At a dinner party, a comet goes overhead. After their power goes out, they suddenly realize that things at their simple dinner party may be involved in a mysterious phenomenon.

So this movie is actually really special for a lot of reasons. The first of which, and I found this out by doing research, is that this was filmed in the director's house, with some of the director's actor friends that he knew would be good at improvising. He would then give them all individual notecards with the character's motivations for scenes, and they would just react. But they never knew what was on anyone else's card, so every reaction was on the fly.

The improvisation works because they had such a good cast here. The narrative doesn't feel lacking in any spots as a result of this, and everything feels so natural for a group of close friends who are in the middle of a complete cosmic shitshow.

The camera shots are done by handcam for most of the scenes, making it seem like you're right there, just among the party guests, and I'm sure it was by design. Still, this gives you excellent shots and the directing is just superb that you never feel like it gets in the way. You end up feeling everything with the group or the individual.

And the plot... whew boy. There's SCIENCE involved here, but it dumbs it down for you to understand what's going on. And like I said, it progresses along just fine--as if you're just in the group experiencing it with them. When it starts to hit its last act, things get tense. And it's written in such a way that I think you notice more. It took me after the movie to really get why something happened later in the movie, is because someone mentioned it earlier in the movie. It's really special the way they chose to do that, and you can tell a lot of work went into the script, as unconventional as it may be.

The ending of the movie is actually really satisfying. It makes the trip feel worth it in its own crazy way, even if it doesn't end conclusively. So I really recommend Coherence.

You know, I only ever saw the remake of this. I have to say that the original outshines the remake in most ways.

The Hitcher is about a boy who picks up a homicidal serial killer/hitchhiker who proceeds to torture him relentlessly in New Mexico.

Rutger Hauer does a masterful job as John Ryder, the serial killer. Like, he's incredible. Just a totally irredeemable son of a bitch who is egging on and torturing a young man. He does some excellent acting to convey an imposing psycho and it's extremely impressive how he can be such a chilling character while he's just a man.

Following the protagonist, we can understand and feel for him, because throughout the film he is just absolutely emotionally destroyed from everything he's gone through as the hitchhiker repeatedly puts him in worse and worse situations as the whole movie goes on, just wanting to turn this kid to be a murderer and kill him.

It's such an insane game of cat and mouse, and the ante gets upped through the entire movie until the climax, which seems to be only half-and-half agreed upon as the most memorable moment in the film.

It's a thrill ride that becomes chilling each and every time John Ryder is on the screen, and I loved watching every bit of this film. I recommend it.

Rating: 7.5/10

Movie #18, Unfriended. This is a movie that has no right to be as good as it is, lol. It's got a stupid premise on paper (six kids are on a Skype call that never cuts away, then weird shit starts happening to them), yet it's genuinely creepy

Unfriended is the one entirely filmed on Skype. It actually ends up being pretty decent. The twist really helps it a lot. Was debating watching it again actually. Lol

Friend Request is irredeemably bad though. So forgettable, but what I do remember is that it gets extremely silly and dumb.

Don't know if anyone saw it here but Host was a very good film with a similar concept to Unfriended, filmed all on Zoom.

And it's gonna be a long October, and I don't have reasons to believe, in much of anything, alright
