DAY 4: Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones
On Amazon Prime ($4 rental)

This movie is a trip, and left me kind of confused.

Here's the deal: This isn't your typical Paranormal Activity movie at all. It's a refreshing take on the found footage genre, actually. They take this movie and expand the lore of this series in an entirely different way, but reject the idea of people in a house with a spooky ghost.

Instead what we get is a story about a bunch of Hispanic kids (which is very refreshing in itself) who just graduated high school and they have a crazy neighbor who is doing creepy cult stuff. When they look into it, they decide they'll conduct a ritual, and from there one of them begins to act differently.

As usual, not getting too far into spoilers here. I appreciate the attempt to take this out of the comfort zone of the genre, but this feels more like a found footage monster movie than anything. We follow a story and a mystery here and there's always something going on. The story itself is pretty basic, but it doesn't need to be anything more than that.

What's real good is the climax of this movie. I did not anticipate any of this batshit tomfoolery, and this entire climax is outstanding stuff, and might be some of the best scenes in this series. I surprisingly enjoyed this one--not as much as probably 1 and 3, but this was a really solid entry into the series.

I wish we could have gotten a found footage series with all kinds of insane nonsense like we get in this one. Like an anthology series tackling different kind of paranormal threats. But instead what we get is a series that is starting to feel like it's building up its own lore a bit too much. With the additions of this one and one more movie left, I don't see how we're going to have a satisfactory conclusion to this franchise. But still, what we got here is some really good stuff.

If you like Paranormal Activity and you feel like you want something that is like Paranormal Activity, but not at all like Paranormal Activity until like near the end, then I recommend this.

I watched Kazuo Umezus Horror Theater: Snake Girl tonight. Last two nights were Corpse Bride & Orphan, which still stood up really well, to my pleasant relief.

Snake Girl was very interesting, combining a story of cyber bullying with Japanese folklore & tradition. It's a low-budget deal, but I found the story very effective, and the make-up for the Snake Girl was both creepy & funny at the same time.

I'm definitely going to branch out to some foreign horror here soon.

DAY 4.1: When A Strange Calls (2006)
On Hulu

I'm just going to keep this short. Nothing happens in this godforsaken film. I almost turned it off. There is absolutely nothing redeeming about this movie at all.

It's about a girl who babysits for a family and a stranger keeps calling the phone to troll her but she thinks the person is inside the house.

I never saw this when it came out and watching it now, I can't imagine even enjoying it 14 years ago. This movie is boring and has no even halfway decent scares in it, and it spends so much of the movie with her finding NOTHING HAPPENING. It's one thing if something actually creepy happens and the stranger is doing something, but most of this movie is NOTHING HAPPENING.

And this movie has some awful direction too. When she first finds out a killer can see her, the girl is looking around with so many camera cuts and it's so campy and stupid you can't take it seriously. There's a freaking ice dispenser jump scare and they reveal it by putting a camera in the fridge behind the ice dispenser. Come on.

And all of this wouldn't have been so bad if they had any sort of development for this girl to overcome personally. But she doesn't. So it's just... this girl just being creeped out for an hour straight.

And the actress who plays the lead, Camilla Belle, is the worst. What's worse than when you have a character with no personality? You give her an actress who, I swear to you, they must have pulled from those horrible D-Grade SyFy Direct to Video movies. And they put her as the lead in this film. But why? Who did she impress to get this job? She's just so wooden it's astonishing. There are so many actors and actresses in this movie that actually went ahead with pretty decent acting careers and she ended up not very successful, for obvious reasons.

Don't watch this movie. It sucks. I actually considered turning it off and then eventually almost fell asleep. This might actually be the worst remake to a horror movie ever. I can't think of one that could possibly be worse. I give it half a point for Katie Cassidy showing early acting chops as the only entertaining character that gets more than 1 minute screentime (of which there are like 3 characters like that total). I could write forever about the other issues this movie has but it's a waste of time. It's just abhorrent.

DAY 5: As Above, So Below
On Netflix

As Above, So Below is another found footage movie (I did not want to watch another one so soon but oh well). It also has Superstore's Jonah in it. This is... I'd say, a good try on this genre.

The story of this is that a group of people are on the hunt in Paris ruins for a stone that her father had also looked for. However, they find that they are getting lost and seem as though they're all just going in circles and get massively lost.

Honestly, the premise of this is very good from the start. Like shockingly good. So I couldn't help but be disappointed in this when it kind of doesn't really deliver as hard as you might like it to. There are very cool scenes throughout this movie with really good scares. However, they're so few and far between that while you can appreciate them, they don't make up for the rest of the movie which is people in small ruin corridors having breakdowns.

This wasn't a bad watch by any stretch, but I did find myself growing more disinterested. I appreciate the attempt more, I guess, especially when you could see what biblical story they are referring to throughout the film. The ending is a bit... well, it's contrived. I was scratching my head, just baffled by them going this route and not doing something... I don't know, cooler? Anything cooler?

It's a good attempt, as I said, but it really feels like they should have delivered more on their premise they set up. If you're interested in a unique found footage movie, give it a shot I guess. Or if the set piece of the Paris ruins is something that interests you, watch it as well because it's actually really cool. But go into it with tapered expectations.

Because why not I'll also discuss movies I see when I scroll through my list that I don't want to actually watch again for whatever reason, but I recommend people check out.

Recommend: CAM
On Netflix

Cam is a movie about a cam girl online who is willing to do increasingly ridiculous things for money from her fans. However, one day she gets hacked and there's an identical copy of her stream online. Things break down from there in a big way.

It's a really interesting look at a cam girl's life as well as an honestly chilling reflection for someone in her career and her obsession to be at the top. The story is very engaging and you're honestly left guessing until the very end. What's also interesting is that this movie was made by a former cam girl herself. It's a surreal trip and a movie I usually recommend to people who like mind-bending movies like this, or people who are interested in seeing the other side of cam girls.

I was too tired to finish this last night.

DAY 6: The Neon Demon
On Amazon Prime

What a trippy movie. This was first and foremost a very artsy affair, and had some absolutely gorgeous cinematography. Hats off to the director for that. It was a visual spectacle that I truly enjoyed watching for it.

In terms of plot, well... Hmm. The best I can describe it is that a young girl is trying to break into the model industry, and she seems to be favored over a few other girls they have, and jealousy ensues.

There's like, so much more here that is just impossible to summarize easily. But it doesn't seem like a horror movie, but it does become a lot more sinister with a huge payoff at the end. And the story they tell is good. Like, I enjoyed everything they did with the story, but it still felt very artsy and was such a wild trip. I'm not entirely against those sorts of movies--at the very least, they managed it better than a movie like, say, Velvet Buzzsaw. But I wouldn't particularly say this is a great movie.

It's beautiful, it tells a story in an artistic way, but I don't feel like I really loved it at any point. Also, Keanu Reeves is in this thing for some reason in a minor role. That's odd. Overall, I got pretty much the movie I expected, but nothing more. Your mileage may vary, depending on how much you like the idea of an artsy sort of film like this. Don't go in expecting this to be a traditional horror film though. I rate it this high based on visuals, mostly.

I was reminded of this movie as well.

Recommend: I See You
On Amazon Prime

This is a movie that feels a bit disjointed, but in the end I liked it a whole hell of a lot more than I expected. The plot is simple, but there's a lot more there.

A mother, father, and their son are living in their house, and their father is a detective working on a missing child case. The family is incredibly dysfunctional and have a lot of issues. They soon start noticing there seems to be something going on in their house that they can't really explain, such as doors closing on their own, noises happening, etc.

So you're not going to guess what's really going on in this movie. I don't care how much you think you'll guess it, you won't. The crux on this entire film relies on the twist in the middle of the movie that takes it from a rather ho-hum unremarkable film to something pretty unique and engaging. By the end, all of this movie makes complete sense, even if you think it might not as you go through it.

I can't promise that you'll like this movie maybe as much as I did--because it does have some issues. But I think that the approach they took with the film is extremely commendable and interesting, at the very least.

DAY 6.1: The Mimic (2017 Korean Film)
On Shudder

I felt like a little Asian flare and ended up going with one I hadn't heard of before I went looking at Shudder's soon-to-be-leaving collection. I've got to say, I was very impressed.

So The Mimic is about a couple who lost their little boy in the woods. They then come across a little girl who appeared to also be lost in the woods, and they decide to take her home. She says her name is the same as their lost boy's name, and since she came into their lives they begin to be reminded of him a lot more in increasingly haunting ways.

Alright, first of all, I'll go ahead and spoil a little bit: Mimics are a monster in Korean folklore and they're more or less shapeshifters. So obviously that's what you go into this movie expecting. And I've got to say, using this concept, I think this does the horror the best I've ever seen it.

This movie has so many good scares and creepy imagery involved with the mimicry, and I was seriously impressed by the creativity they showed with it. There are even really subdued scenes that are honestly chilling. There's a really great mastery of using less is more sometimes, and mixing it with loud scares.

The acting in this movie is phenomenal as well. You buy into how everyone is acting and it's some seriously engrossing stuff. You feel for the family members as they go through what they do and everyone's motivations just work. Just absolutely great in that department.

And the plot just works so well with everything. It progresses at a reasonable pace, builds up to major moments, and each major plot point feels significant. By the time we get to the end of the movie, it all feels like it's been built up to this moment and without getting too much into it, it's a really good finish (your mileage may vary though).

It certainly has a very Asian horror feel to it, and it absolutely did not disappoint. This is definitely my favorite movie I've watched so far.

DAY 7: Mama
On Peacock

I always loved the little short, but when it came out, but I never actually watched the feature length movie. I feel like it suffers from a lot of the issues that horror shorts have when they try to extend them to a full-length movie. Which isn't bad by any stretch, but I both really enjoyed this movie while also having issues with it. But this is how the director got his start and went on to direct the IT movies.

An estranged father kills the mother of his two daughters and goes to the woods, ultimately deciding he will kill the children and then himself. Before he can, a mysterious entity kills him. Five years later, the children are found and then get raised by their uncle and his girlfriend. The children say that they were being helped survive in a cabin in the woods by someone called "Mama" and then strange things begin to happen in the house.

So the visuals are outstanding and amazing to watch. Javier Botet, known for being a lot of creepy monsters, got his start in the US with his role as Mama. The cinematography is extremely well done and they do a lot of stylish and clever things with the monster.

I should also mention the characters are all enjoyable as well. Jessica Chastain does a great job as the girlfriend who never wanted this but is sort of thrust upon taking care of these kids. The rest of the characters, including the kids, round out a good cast with solid development and motivation.

That is, at least until the end. At the end, we're left with a confusing mess of mixed signals wherein... nothing adds up, in terms of motivation, including from Mama itself. While it's clear they had an admirable attempt to make a poignant ending, and what they do is actually unexpected and I kind of liked it, there's just developments that kind of say to me it should have never ended like that. I never felt like this really detracted from my enjoyment of the movie, but it's worth mentioning this because it's kind of unavoidable.

Overall, it's a good movie. I really enjoyed it. I just had issues with the plot a bit.

Rating: 7/10

DAY 7.1: Deadcon
On Netflix

So Deadcon sucks. If you give a shit about Deadcon, I'm not going to be as careful with my summary here about the plot.

It's a movie about a social media convention where a girl and her manager go to a hotel room and creepy stuff happens until eventually she gets possessed.

There's many reasons why Deadcon sucks, so I'll fire them off rapidfire.

1) The plot is stupid and boring as hell.
2) Nothing happens for most of the movie.
3) There's a few actors and actresses who are actual social media stars, and they are awful at acting.
4) They actors and actresses who are actual social media stars don't die until the end of the movie.

Legit, the first kill happens with like 20 minutes left in the movie. What the fuck. Like they did a commentary on social media stars and how it sometimes sucks, and I guess that was okay for the first bit of this movie, but after that it's just NOTHING. And the acting slayed me because it was so bad for the most part. Just painful.

Don't watch Deadcon. It's really bad. I don't know how it got 50% on Rotten Tomatoes. This movie is still not as bad as the When A Stranger Calls remake though, because at least they tried a little commentary on social media celebrities, and while it was just brutally boring, at least there was forward advancement of the plot.

That is my praise of this movie. "There was forward advancement of the plot."

DAY 8: Behind You
On Hulu

This is a movie I don't know that I'll have a lot to say about it. It's a good low-budget horror movie that does the best it can with what it has.

Behind You is a story about two little girls whose mother passes away. A friend of the mother takes them to their aunt who doesn't want them there because some evil force lives in the house and goes after little girls. You can probably guess what happens after that.

Well, sort of. The script takes you on a ride which, while not particularly interesting, has some good twists and a couple good scares. However, when the action of everything goes on, it's where things aren't quite as good. It's a basic, story that, without the twists, is rather bland. There was one part that was also hilariously bad. But they subverted my expectations a few times and kept me more engaged than I expected.

I didn't particularly enjoy it too much, but I'll give it props for the things it did well under a low budget.

Recommend: The Wretched
On Hulu

I watched this not too long ago, so I'll just open up with a FUN FACT. The Wretched tied Avatar for most weeks being first place on the box office. It has made history. Granted, this is entirely because it came out in theaters almost directly after the Covid epidemic happened and no other movies were releasing in theaters, but it's still the top of the box office in this one category!

But in all seriousness, The Wretched is actually a really good movie. It's about a boy who spends his summer working with his dad after the divorce of his parents. He has problems fitting in except for one friend who helps him investigate some strange occurrences with his neighbor who he thinks is a witch.

This takes me back to some classic 80's-90's movies vibes a bit. It has awesome visuals and a great story, and honestly I loved going through the film. There's also a few twists, one of which is actually really excellent. Like, it was such a good twist and it's worth watching for that.

I was very satisfied with this movie and I recommend people check it out if they're looking for something supernatural and good!

DAY 8.1: The Beach House
On Shudder

So okay, Shudder has blown it out of the park so far out of the two originals I've watched. I'm honestly shocked by the quality of this movie.

The Beach House is about a college couple that stays at one of their parents' beach house. They discover that a couple was living there--it's friends of the parents. They end up partying one night, with edibles hitting them all harder than they expected.

I honestly don't want to give up much more than that, but I'll tell you to go in expecting a body horror movie that is fucking disgustingly good at some points.

The budget for this is shoe-string, but it's done so amazingly well despite that. The effects and make-up were crafted in such a way to just completely engross you into what you're watching. I had to just turn away at parts it was so nasty, but so effective.

The plot is super simple, and you know what? That's fine. It reminds me of really old school horror movies that are just following a few random people as they try to survive something that is much bigger than them. Think a 50's or 60's kind of feel. But the movie is slow at first, deliberately, to give you a lot of the groundwork for the subtext they throw at you as the movie continues.

I don't know what else to say but that this is a simple, enjoyable, and grotesque ride. I definitely recommend it.

Rating: 8/10

DAY 8.2: He's Out There
On Amazon Prime

I 100% watched this because Yvonne Strahovski was in it. But this was surprisingly really good.

This movie is about a mother, father, and two girls who move to a new house. The mother and girls go there early, but then that night they realize someone is coming for them.

Yeah, it's a home invasion movie. But as far as a home invasion movie goes, I thought this was a really good one. I think the draw of this one is that, while we can probably count on two hands home invasion movies with a mother and her children, this one is exceptionally well-acted and makes sense. Strahovski is easily the best part of this movie, being such a convincing mother and it really feels like she has known these kids their whole lives. It honestly felt like a new level of parents in a horror movie. I can see why she took on this movie with what she got to do.

In terms of the plot... I mean, it's a home invasion movie with a bit of a twist on the genre in that the killer does more 'traps', if that makes sense. The killer is more sadistic and methodical, which is really the thing that makes it stand out. And when you get to the ending, it honestly feels really satisfying. The climax onward is extremely satisfying and I quite enjoyed it.

Also, the killer has a great look. I just need to mention that because it's very strong.

Overall, I actually do recommend it if you're looking for a home invasion movie and you ever liked Yvonne Strahovski. She really shows off her acting chops in this film in a movie that manages to stand out from the typical genre.

Watched He's Out There back when it came out. The Collector already did the killer with traps thing and did it way better if you ask me. I'm with you on the killer having a great design though!

DAY 9: Coyote Lake
On Hulu

So I don't know if I'd really call this a horror movie. I don't know if I'd call it a thriller. It's a drama of some kind though...? I mostly watched it because it had Veronica from Riverdale in it and she's actually really good at acting.

Coyote Lake is about a girl and her mother who live on the U.S./Mexico border who run a bed & breakfast. The girl's mother seems a bit too controlling, but when one night they had a couple drug dealers show up and put them at gunpoint, but they start to learn there is more to this bed & breakfast than they expected.

No, there's no supernatural elements or anything. I just had no other way to describe it, I guess. Basically, the movie centers on the dynamic between the mother and daughter, and it's actually pretty interesting. The movie ends up being pretty twisted, and it does a good job telling the story they want. I wasn't too particularly enthralled with it, but I also feel like I wasn't the demographic for this.

Overall, not sure if I count it as a horror movie, but as a drama it's serviceable and tells a good enough of a story. I really don't have much else to say about this, but I need a real horror movie here next.

Making up for the last entry.

Recommend: The Lodge
On Hulu

So I loved this movie when it came out in theaters before the world shut down. It's a seriously compelling story that, if you like a movie with a slow burn to a satisfying ending, you'll love this movie. This film does so many cinematic artistic choices that are really impressive, and I always found myself being pretty entranced by how clever this movie can be, even if you seem like you guess what's going on.

The Lodge is about a father, his girlfriend, and his two kids going to an isolated lodge in the winter. The kids resent the girlfriend and everything begins to break down when the father has to leave for business. She once belonged to a religious cult and, although she's moved past it, she still struggles with the trauma from it. She struggles even more with it as she and the two kids in the lodge keep experiencing mysterious things when they're stranded there.

I think this movie is masterfully done and is very well-acted. You go through such an array of emotions as you go through the film, and the conclusion resulting from it is just satisfying and makes the whole trip worth it.

Big recommend for The Lodge.

Movie #9, Evil Dead (OG). What a great movie this is considering the budget they were on. And that they only cast Bruce Campbell because they knew he had no standards for taking roles

DAY 9.1: Hellraiser
On Shudder

It's been incredibly long since I watched Hellraiser. I honestly don't remember if I've seen the whole thing. But hey. Go out of your way to watch Hellraiser. How do I even summarize this movie? It's so crazy.

A husband and wife move into the house of the husband's deceased brother who had an affair with his wife. His brother had been horrifically murdered by a hellish cult of demons, but when the brother's blood lands in the room he died, the brother comes back to life as a skinless monster, who demands that the wife bring him sacrifices so he may gain flesh again.

I'm missing out on a lot to summarize it properly, but I think that's the best I can do. Where do I start? This movie has so much rich lore in it that only merely frames the narrative in front of you. It's a 1986 movie, but the effects and demons look great still (for the most part--there's exceptions). But the way that they make the effects from everything with how horrifying the demons are, to how gruesome Frank is, to how utterly grisly some of the set pieces even look, it is done so well that you just have to appreciate the effort put into it. There was a vision from Clive Barker and by god, he nailed it.

The plot is engaging and really takes you on some turns and gives you a dynamic feel to it. It gives you such a sense of madness and insanity towards the end that leaves you almost stunned by the end of it. You just have to appreciate the level of detail placed into this film, because it's so concise and takes something like the Cenobite demons and make them feel like they're such an established thing, even though it's the first film.

I don't know if there's enough good things I can say about this movie. But I mean... come on. Watch it. It's a classic.

DAY 9.2: Knock Knock
On Peacock

Keanu Reeves is the star of this movie, and it's honestly shocking seeing him in this film. But I think it plays on a really terrifying fear for some men.

A family man is alone at home while his family is away for the weekend. He eventually lets two girls into his house and helps get them a ride home, but they seem interested in a lot more than that.

This is a really tense movie for what it is. As a guy, it's especially terrifying. It takes a situation that is extremely difficult and then makes that situation 1000 times more uncomfortable and terrifying. A tale in absolute hopelessness for Keanu Reeves's character sends him spiraling, being absolutely helpless in his situation. And you can really sympathize with him throughout it, despite what goes on.

Now, Keanu Reeves isn't the world's best actor. I think we all know that. He still does a great job with this movie conveying just how much dread and frustration he has. It was really fun watching him at the beginning of the movie being a father, and you can tell he had a complete blast with it.

The ending builds up to a hug gut punch and while I saw a lot of it coming, it still has an impact. While the ending is slightly open-ended, you're left wondering how the aftermath of it all plays out.

The girls in the movie were also very well-played, and you grow a great hatred for them. They are absolutely despicable and this is even accented in the very end of the movie too just by looking at what they leave behind.

It's a very fun movie, if not a horrifying one for delving into something that I haven't seen many movies dig into. I recommend it.

Love knock knock.

Also, not sure you are supposed to sympathize with Keanu too much. Lol. Yet your post was full on team Keanu from the very onset to the end haha.

I think it's a mixed bag that leans more towards Keanu as you go further in the movie. Especially the end. He really does end up in an impossible situation that he did everything possible to avoid while trying to be a helpful guy.

Watched Knock Knock tonight and actually really loved it! I think horror becomes more effective the closer it gets to your own life, so to see something so insanely fucked up springing out of a single bad choice in a situation that a large portion of men are probably going to encounter at some point in their life (though likely to a less exaggerated degree) makes for a really great movie in my book!

I love Keanu and while I'll admit he's not necessarily the best actor, he's always giving it his all and holy moly did that come through in that outburst he had near the end. You could really feel how done he was with everything.
