Why not? Let's do it. I'll talk about them when I finish watching. Feel free to recommend stuff--I have Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and HBO and I'll probably buy Shudder because I heard there's some good stuff on there too. I love horror movies, good or bad, and I usually have something to say about them after watching.

I don't know what I'll watch tonight yet.

But basically I want this to be an excuse for us all to discuss horror movies go go go.

I'll make some brief blurbs on stuff I have no intention of watching.

Hereditary:
So I love Hereditary. Absolutely love it. It's probably one of my favorite modern horror movies. The amount of foreshadowing and the sense of dread is really next level. It's a perfectly crafted movie that feels like each scene had so much planning involved. There's very few horror movies I love more than Hereditary.

So why am I not watching it? Because I watched it again less than 2 months ago with my girlfriend who really enjoyed it as well. That was the fifth time I watched it though!

Midsommar:
So I hate Midsommar. Which, I know, same director as Hereditary. But this movie has an amazing opening and a completely predictable and lackluster rest of the movie. I know what they were doing with the themes of having no emotional support and how it goes through the movie--that part is brilliant. But everything in between is uninspired weirdness for the sake of it with a play by numbers cult movie. There's an amazing movie in there, but it's only in the first and last 15 minutes of an incredibly long movie.

I'm not watching it because I kind of hate it. Lol

But I'll make further blurbs like this for movies I won't be watching again for whatever reason when I have time.

That Hereditary/Midsommar post has me curious because I completely loathe Hereditary and now I'm wondering if I'd like Midsommar, lol

(My beef with Hereditary is that the first half or so is legit mastercraft horror and then suddenly ghosts! And everything from then on is painfully dumb IMO.)

Yeah the list has a bunch of movies where the scares have that BLARING sound to let you know you should be scared. It's the worst modern horror film trope. But at least its a varied list

I mean, I hate it enough that I don't think I recommend anyone give it a shot. I'm sure someone else who enjoyed it might be able to sell you on it more. Like I said, the director had a lot of great ideas that were just poorly done. Another thing that keeps me from recommending it is that this movie is LOOOOOONG. So if you don't like it, you're in for it. My ex wanted to walk out but I convinced her to see it through because I thought it might deliver. It did not.

Also, I like your list Corrik. It has a lot of variety as Aecioo mentioned. I don't mind okay-ish horror movies either, which your list seems to have plenty of them! I'll probably end up overlapping with a lot of them. I know there's a couple of them there I'll end up doing a little blurb about, probably after you get to them (I'm looking at you, Bird Box...)

DAY 1: The Ruins
On HBO

So alright, I was ready to hate this movie. I did end up seeing a part of this movie, but I barely remembered any of it. But it opens with your typical college kids partying hard and having fun and getting drunk and then the one girl in this movie goes fully nude and I was convinced this was going to be trash.

But honestly? It ended up pretty good. A group of college kids head to some ruins in South America while on a trip and then get confronted by Mayans (like, modern ones, not tribal ones) and they are very angry at them for heading to the ruins and they don't quite tell you why immediately. I don't want to give away too much, but the Americans all end up having to survive on top of the ruins, but there's a lot more involved.

I thought it was just going to be a typical "Americans end up running into foreigners and whoops they're very brutal" but it's a lot better than that. What ends up playing out is a lot better, if a little hokey at times. When the movie works, it absolutely works well. When it doesn't... you at worst just end up kind of bored. I wish it had done more with the much better parts, but I think it did a good job otherwise.

There was a scene in this movie that was absolutely chilling to me though. Like, I had to look away and I rarely ever do during horror movies. But it was done so effectively and the entire scene continues and gets even worse, and I'd probably say that's when the movie was most effective.

Overall, it's a flick that exceeded my expectations from the start, and it had some really clever ideas. It drags occasionally, but I'd recommend it if you want to see a unique take on... well, everything I just explained I guess.

I remember really liking The Ruins way back when it first came out; to its fairness, it was a tough novel to adapt and it actually ended up being pretty close it.

https://letterboxd.com/film/lady-death/
I watched my first film of the month, Lady Death. A below-average animated comic adaptation with weak animation and even weaker plot. However, I did enjoy a lot of the Gothic imagery which had way more personality than any of the characters. Also a pretty gruesome (for this style of animation) immolation & hell descent scene.

I liked Midsommar a lot, so I would recommend it, especially since it seems like you liked the general mood from Hereditary in the beginning. Midsommar carries a lot of the same style from the director. It's just a far better movie in general.

DAY 2: Devil's Gate
On Netflix

Ahahahaha what a bunch of idiots you are. I tricked you all into following my Shawn Ashmore filmography viewing topic. Kidding, I didn't realize he was in both of the movies so far!

So I was pleasantly surprised with this movie. The beginning of it is... well, it is strange. I don't feel it matches the rest of the movie at all. It was a strange choice and did not prepare me for anything ahead.

And let me tell you, I don't think I'd be prepared for anything ahead regardless. Because this movie is a trip. The premise is that an FBI agent and local deputy in middle of nowhere America investigate the disappearance of local man's wife and son. When they go to investigate, they realize there's something caged in the basement. From here, this movie appears to be going down the path of a religious man believing in his faith and a desire to do what's necessary to bring back his wife and son.

I won't comment on the plot anymore, but it takes a turn and when it does, it's extremely interesting how the rest of the movie unfolds. I didn't expect it at all and was pleasantly surprised with how it went and I was legitimately shocked at parts.

The directing is the best part of this movie though. A nobody named Clay Staub managed to film this with such competency that you wouldn't expect from a guy with this budget. Even more impressive are the visuals. It's a legitimate spectacle at points for a video on demand film. This guy was given a shot and he blasted it out of the park. I'd love to see what he directs next.

All of the positives out of the way, as I mentioned, the beginning of this movie is so detached and I feel like it wastes just a little bit too much time getting there. When the movie has all of the pieces on the table, it does bungle them a little bit. It's hardly a flawless screenplay. It's a bit exposition-heavy and the dialogue is a bit of a struggle at times. The denouement, in particular, feels a little pedestrian as well without the sort of impact of the rest of the film.

Despite that, I thoroughly enjoyed my watch of this. If you'd like to see creative directing and effects with a concept that feels familiar, I recommend checking it out though. For me, something new with the horror genre will usually get my praise, even if there are imperfect aspects.

Rating: 7/10

My watchlist so far is short this year, and mostly re-watches: Hereditary, Vivarium, Annihilation, and the only one I haven't seen, Sadako vs Kayako. Plus an annual group Over the Garden Wall rewatch, which basically functions as a movie. Should get some good recs from this topic.

DAY 3: Paranormal Activity 4
On Amazon Prime ($3 rental)

So, a brief history on my thoughts on the Paranormal Activity movies. 1 is an awesome movie. 2 is the most boring shit I've ever watched with a laughably flaccid ending. 3 might actually be better than 1, honestly. I only ever watched the first two movies--and then I decided to watch the whole series. So I only saw 3 rather recently.

So now I just saw 4. I like the main actress in it, Kathryn Newton. You may know her as the girl from Detective Pikachu. The story with this one is that she has a woman and her son move in next door. The woman gets sick and heads to the hospital and her creepy son comes over talking about seeing his best friend and demon boy with the same name as the evil demon in the previous movies. And, as you may guess, increasingly strange things happen in the house.

I thought I had the story pegged, but I loathe to say this movie outsmarts you with a good twist and a couple scares. I say loathe because this movie is not good. At all. Seeing these movies so close after one another has really grinded down my patience for them. Stall, stall, stall, more stalling, then scare. That's the movie now. And unlike 3, which was a massively creative and step up, this one doesn't do anything particularly unique.

The characters, btw, are a rough go around too. The lead teenager girl is good, and so is her boyfriend. Her parents are barely even a part of this movie though, which I find actually a little refreshing, but they're so in the back of your mind plot-wise.

I think the worst part is how long they took to get to anything actually spooky. Oh my god they took so much time before getting to the god damn invisible demon. It was so frustrating. I don't get the pacing with this film at all.

But it suffers from what Paranormal Activity 2 did. It was a rehash that offered nothing new and didn't offer any moments of legitimate dread. The characters weren't interesting and it got silly at parts.

So I do not recommend Paranormal Activity 4 unless you need to round up watching the series like I do. I'll be watching the last two movies this month too. God help me.

It's the one with the two little boys and one is super creepy and the big innovation they added to it is that light that points dots all over the living room.

So I debated how to do this. I watched two horror movies yesterday and I was wondering if I should leave it in a back up in case I miss a day or something, but then I said that I'm actually watching one horror movie a day, so here I am.

DAY 3.1: The Room
On Shudder

I heard this was one of the good Shudder movies, and I have to say I was really pleasantly surprised. This is a German movie about a couple that moves into a house. They soon realize they can make a wish in a room of the house and it will come true. They proceed to use it in all the ways you expect, but then they make a wish that they really should not have made. A discovery after that about these wishes makes things a lot more dire. And that's all I can really get into with the plot.

But the plot here is really well done. It's pretty twisted and every piece seems like it was paced out perfectly. It does a good job still surprising you when you think you have an idea how this movie will go. There's a twist towards the end that really threw me for a loop as well. Unfortunately, I don't have too much to say about the plot except "Wow I really like it." It's not all perfect. A couple moments are a bit bumbled and I found the motivations for not just making the hard decision a little flimsy, but it didn't take me out of the movie at all.

The visuals are astounding though. I mentioned the wishing room, but there's a room that "powers" the wishing room and all the visuals from that are so great. Like you look at this thing, you look at the door to the wishing room, and then various other visuals are done to make this damn thing so foreboding and creepy. There's a few other visuals I can't talk about that are also done very well too. It's a movie on a clear budget, but they made all of their budget count. You have a movie like Devil's Gate that used all of their budget on the special effects, but this one used it all on creating this daunting home and these creepy rooms.

I was engaged through the whole movie, wanting to know where it goes, and it delivered on it. It's a simple movie, but that simplicity is the appeal.

Rating: 8/10

Shudder is $6 a month or so, btw, with a 7 day trial. So it's not a terrible purchase.
