As for the link. I skimmed the whole thing and saw no parts with him walking back his statements. In fact, he repeatedly condemns white supremacy at least half a dozen more times throughout the course of the interview lol

You would have no problem with someone casually implying you're a white supremacist over and over again even after you've said you aren't? That wouldn't offend you after a dozen or so times? Its not a direct question. Pretending that isnt a loaded question is you just being disingenuous

It's not loaded to just ask someone if they denounce white supremacy. It's a simple yes or no question.

not really

none of your claims matter anymore when he literally just said "proud boys, stand by" tonight, and absolutely tried his hardest to get out of answering a simple yes or no question.

none of what he said prior matters anymore since this is now the most relevant fact.

but you're going to keep shoving your fingers in your ears and scream no, then try and act smug when people just don't want to deal with a shitty two bit troll anymore.

trump refused to call white supremacists bad and told them to stand by instead.

this is an irrefutable fact.

"be present while something bad is happening but fail to take any action to stop it."
that's like from the phrase "we can't just stand by and do nothing" or to "stand idly by".

As someone who lived in Charlottesville at the time, and followed both the lead-up and aftermath of the rally in extreme detail, I can assure that you're wrong.

There was never any doubt or confusion regarding the kind of people in attendance. Only those who were completely ignorant of the event are now coming out of the woodwork with their enlightened opinion how it was regular peaceful totally not white supremacist folks just protesting a statue removal. The advertisements, list of organizers and permit requestors made it clear that it wasn't a gathering organized by or for 'very fine people.'

Trump was clear. He downplayed the actions of the protestors (even though they caused the death of Heather Heyer and injured numbers more) while pointing his concern towards the dangerous actions of the "alt left" counter-protesting.

He initially did refuse to make any condemnation and did in fact refer to the group (which collectively marched under nazi, confederacy, and gadsden flags) as fine people. He later walked back his statements because it was getting so much negative press, but that doesn't undo what he said.

I can't fucking stand news attempting to be seen as "fair and balanced", so they take one side to task over literally nothing just to maintain that appearance. Call a spade a spade.

CNN:
Trump was intent on interrupting Biden on nearly every question and the former vice president wasn't above name-calling, calling the President a clown and telling him to shut up.
Gee...I wonder WHY Biden told him to shut up? Maybe because Trump wouldn't fucking let him talk? Why is telling that fucking fat clown to shut up a negative? He didn't say it enough or forcefully enough! What the absolute fuck?

Anyway...decent analysis here:
https://www.npr.org/2020/09/30/918500976/trump-derails-first-presidential-debate-with-biden-and-5-other-takeaways

I liked the end, basically the same idea I had last night, lol:
After the first presidential debate of the 2004 election, Internet conspiracies abounded about a mysterious bulge in the back of President George W. Bush's jacket. Some believed, unfoundedly, that there was a communications system rigged up by White House advisers to coach him.
Bush dismissed that, cracking wise.
"I guess the assumption was that if I were straying off course they would ... kind of like a hunting dog, they would punch a buzzer, and I would jerk back into place," Bush said afterward.
Maybe something to look into.

Gotta say I kinda agree with CNN, here. This is a presidential debate. On a national stage. We're hoping to see someone emerge who can at least sound like and behave like a president, and get some idea of where their policies will take the country.

We already know Trump is a lying blowhard who mouths off constantly. Would've preferred it if Biden didn't let Trump get under his skin and was able to maintain his composure a little better. I think Trump is a giant piece of shit, but he's still the sitting president. Telling the president to shut up and calling him a clown shows a lack of decorum, even though Trump operates without decorum to begin with.

But I will say that I'm glad Biden stood up for himself and fired back. Just wish he chose his words a little more carefully. He should announce he'll only attend the next debate if Trump releases his taxes. We already know the next debate is going to be more of the same. May as well try to get something out of it.

So he should just "be the better man" and settle for at most 5 seconds of uninterrupted speaking the entire debate as Trump continues to interject and insult him?
The fuck is your problem? Must be nice to have never dealt with a bully your entire life and think turning the other cheek actually gets them to behave.
I thought Biden had incredible restraint, too much. I can't even imagine spending an hour and a half trying to discuss complex issues with a man-baby interrupting me sometimes ten times in less than a minute! How composed would your thoughts and statements remain if every few seconds you had to abruptly stop and let Trump hurl lies and insults, then try to resume or shift to retorting what he just said, and...whoops! He just spoke up again! Oh well.

But I will say that I'm glad Biden stood up for himself and fired back. Just wish he chose his words a little more carefully. That's stupid. Trump will just repeat the lie he can't release them, claim Biden "knows" this (again, a lie...the IRS flat out said the audit doesn't prevent him from publicly releasing them), and say Biden's a coward trying to dodge a 2nd debate. All it accomplishes is undercutting Biden, absolutely horrible advice.

You can't possibly blame someone for losing their patience when their opponent's "strategy" is to never let them get a fucking word in edgewise. That's level one trolling, and barring moderator punishment the only recourse is to tell him to shut up or just stay silent the entire time and throw away the debate.

You can't complain that someone isn't conducting themselves properly when their opponent is making it impossible for them to do their job properly.

I'm not complaining. As I pointed out above, I'm glad Biden fought back.

Would I have handled it any better? Fuck no! I would've struggled with the urge to punch Trump in the fucking mouth.

But this is a debate for the presidency. I'd expect someone who is going to run our entire country to have thicker skin and a cooler demeanor than I have. Forgive me for wanting someone more evolved, mature, and intelligent than myself to be the president.

Look, I'm voting for Biden. 100%. He's the clear choice here. All I'm saying is he could've performed a little better.

All in all -- it was an entertaining bout, although it didn't really address many hard issues. However, it did limit the candidates' ability to fall back on canned talking points (which are also of little to no value when it comes to evaluating candidates).

At the start of the debate, Trump was oddly subdued and collected. Although he was keeping his composure even more than Biden, that kind of an approach just doesn't work. That would have let Biden stay on carefully rehearsed talking points for most of the night where he'd have more control over his presentation. One of Biden's big selling points is his contrast to Trump in terms of image, whereas taking him to the ground hurts Biden's image far more than it hurts Trump (especially considering that they were taking turns heckling each other).

And while Biden let himself get rattled and sometimes inadvertently gave Trump ammunition, he also sometimes played Trump by provoking Trump into interrupting him during harder questions. By contrast, there was a moment early on when Trump was fumbling with an answer and Biden knew enough to just sit back and smile. When Biden was put into that same spot on occasion, Trump got him out of it. Conversely, there were a few moments when Trump successfully derailed the discussion.

The difference between Biden and Hillary is that Biden was willing to directly engage Trump whereas Hillary just tried to move back to her canned talking points. As such, she managed to stay on point a lot better than Biden. The fact that Biden was engaging more allowed Trump to take the conversation into what he wanted to talk about.

Otherwise the debate was a lot of the candidates asking each other why they hadn't done something. Biden attacked Trump's past almost-four years, while Trump criticized the almost 50 years Biden has been in some political office. Very safe, very standard mudslinging. The only real issue is that Biden kept trying to blame Trump for the recession caused by lockdowns resulting from COVID when Biden himself *repeatedly* went on record in favor of lockdowns. Likewise, Biden criticized preventative measures like shutting down travel when it was happening. And the PPE supply was depleted partly while Biden was VP.

And both candidates managed to work in their planned hits. Biden brought up the recent tax claim (which Trump deflected by pointing out that Biden had a hand in creating that tax code). Trump managed to bring up the Hunter Biden allegations a few times, partly thanks to Biden's unforced error when he brought up his other son (and, instead of saying "my son Bo" -- which might have been to get people to have a more positive association with Hunter -- he simply said "my son," which allowed Trump to launch into the Hunter Biden allegations again and the fact that Biden fought back on them allowed Trump to keep at it).

And, because Trump rattled him, Biden accidentally started to talk about supporting the Green New Deal, which provoked an incredulous reaction from Chris Wallace who was surprised that Biden was publicly admitting his support for it. And, as others have pointed out in the past, the framework for his policy has some strong resemblance to the GND. The whole thing validates Trump's criticism that Biden is supporting fringe elements in the Democratic Party.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/jul/20/joe-biden-has-endorsed-the-green-new-deal-in-all-but-name

As for who "won" in terms of influencing voters, NPR's undecided voter interviews kinda illustrates what Trump might have been going for:
"It moved it from maybe voting for one of them to definitely not voting for either,"
"I'm definitely not going to vote for Trump, but I can't say that Biden has won my vote completely either. So I really just want to throw up thinking about voting for either of them."
https://www.npr.org/2020/09/30/918677460/only-a-few-undecided-voters-remain-did-the-debate-help-anyone-decide

Rather than win new supporters, it may have convinced people on the fence over voting for Biden (because they weren't pleased with Trump) to not vote at all >_>

White supremacist groups aren't the ones involved in the rioting, looting, and violence that we see in cities like Portland though. The entire question was political talking point to deflect from whats actually going on
Wrong, that question was a softball pitch for him to clearly denounce systemic racism, and yet he even failed to hit that one. That Trump Ingraham interview last month was full of those easy home runs for him, she even kept trying to steer him towards them, yet he still did something as stupid as compare a murder with golfing.

I'm so sad for this country. Who won last night? China, Russia, anyone who stands to benefit from a destabilized America. I still remember the night Trump won, when he said that now was the time to heal the country from such a divisive campaign. Absolute horseshit. The country is more divided now than ever. And these debates will just add more fuel to the fire as he incites more and more chaos.

That's called damage control
No they straight up asked him again and he denounced it like he has a dozen other times before. Doubtful, it's damage control since thats a video that probably relatively few people will ever see. At least he didnt make the same mistake as in the debate. Maybe he's finally learning he has to very simply in plain Jane english say, "I denounce all forms" or else its easy for them to spin against him.

I do think he's being disingenuous about knowing who the proud boys are though even though they aren't actually a white supremacist group anyway. Bigoted sure but the group isn't even all white and their leader is a literally an afro-Cuban dude named Enrique Tarrio lol. Are you really gonna claim a white supremacist group is headed by a black Hispanic dude lmao
