If you watch Back to the Future now it's still good.

I would argue it's better than a majority of movies being made today.

Out of that list? Ghostbusters. Not on the list... not sure, so many choices. The 80s was a great time for film.

Among other things, we had Batman, They Live, The Thing, Trading Places, Coming to America, American Werewolf in London, Gremlins, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, etc, etc.... although, of the highlights, I guess the answer would be either ESB, Raiders, or Coming to America. ("When I say the boy has his own money, I mean the boy has his own money!")

Plus I need to re-watch a few films like Willow and Princess Bride.

Back To The Future Winner for me. Amazeballs when it released (I was a kid).
Airplane Shrug was semi funny, but dumb as well. Watched once.
Caddy Shack Funny. Gopher was cute. Nothing to write home about though.
Terms Of Endearment I don't have breasts or menstrate, so I never watched it.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. I have been meaning to rewatch this. Great, but not BTTF great.
Scarface Never watched. Friends have tried to get me to watch. Only mob movie I like is Johnny dangerously.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off Great as well. Watched multiple times, but still like BTTF more.
Die Hard Eh, Bruce is cool. It was ok. Never a huge fan like many though. The lightgun game rocked though.
Purple Rain WTF is this doing on the list? Does anyone think this is a top contender, even chicks?
Ghostbusters Who ya gonna call? Great show. Iconic even. Almost as good as BTTF for me, but blah on 2.

So many other much better options. Princess bride for instance. Bill and Teds as well (one of my all time favorites), Star wars 2 and 3 were in the 80's as well.

Honestly there are a shit ton of good ones, even for chicks (Dirty dancing for instance instead of one of the above choices).....nobody puts baby in a corner.

The first one is, not the second (Which is the best in my opinion).

The first still should belong on a best list I'd say, but only if it was like the top 30+, the top 20 of the 80's is a pretty freaking hard list to make cause there were so many freaking good movies in that decade (and the 90's).

Honestly the world has gone down hill big time since Y2k.

If you like Airplane! you need to watch the movie Zero Hour! It was the basis for Airplane. It's a serious drama which becomes incredibly funny because you know all the jokes. The protagonists of both films are named Ted Striker, and the pilot was played by a famous sports figure (Elroy "Crazylegs" Hirsch). Many of the scenes are very similar, like the young boy visiting the cockpit and the hysterical woman getting slapped.

What's your favorite '80s movie?

ALL OF THEM.

If I had to pick just one, I'd have a really hard time (I don't really rank things in my head, as much as I just sort of categorize stuff as "thing I like" or "thing I dislike" without trying to compare them to each other or rank them). Especially since my mood at any given time means I'd be forced to choose different movies from different genres (sometimes, you want to watch a scary horror movie or exciting action movie, other times you just want a fun comedy.

Tron's always on my list of movies that leap to mind for most quintessential 80s movies. Big Trouble in Little China and The Last Dragon are also great movies that feel like they never would have worked outside of the 80s (which is why it would almost certainly suck so, so bad if they ever got the remakes they've been taking about). Transformers taps huge into my childhood nostalgia vein. Clue and Spaceballs are comedies that I can basically quote every line from. The Monster Squad is a fun light horror movie, and Army of Darkness is a neat little mix of comedy and horror. The Running Man is great cheesy action, and as much as a lot of people are dismissive of Mad Mad: Beyond Thunderdome, it's still my favorite in the franchise.

Fantasy's one of my fav genres in general, and it was huge in the 1980s. Labyrinth and Neverending story are nostalgic favs, and both had great music. Speaking of great music Conan the Barbarian and Excalibur are both very different movies (and both are excellent), but each also has a fantastic soundtrack, and helped shape my own taste in music (Excalibur was a huge part of what got me into Wagner, Orff, and classical music in general, and Basil Poledouris' score for Conan is hugely influential, and is still awesome today). I also absolutely LOVE Krull, even if it is cheesy and people today are more inclined to shit on it for that rather than relax and enjoy it in its own way.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit's a great movie even now, but at the time it was kind of mind-blowing.

There's also Midnight Madness, a movie I absolutely loved in the 80s but which most people today have pretty much entirely forgotten about. It had a huge impact on my psyche back then (and was also the first movie both Michael J Fox and Paul Reubens/Pee-Wee Herman ever appeared in).

It's also worth remembering that Empire Strikes Back also kind of skirts the edge of being an 80s movie, and Return of the Jedi is '83 (even if neither really feel like 80s movies).

If I sat here for another hour I could probably just keep naming awesome movie after awesome movie (Top Secret, Gremlins, True Genius, A Fish Called Wanda, Superman II, Goonies...), ranging from popular blockbusters all the way to mostly forgotten cult-y films (like Ice Pirates). I could probably recommend hundreds of fantastic films that I would easily recommend to anyone born in the last 25 years or so who've missed out on them (and then hate those young bastards to death with my mind when they inevitably complain that they think everything I love is boring and old).

You kind of don't.

Airplane is funny because they take the deadpan delivery and cheesy dialogue of the original movie and turn it into comic timing and presentation. Zero Hour is basically just Airplane with all the sight-gags cut out and taking itself way too seriously.

If anything, if people like Airplane, the movies they need to watch are Top Secret and Hot Shots. Those are very much the same style of comedy.

They might also enjoy tracking down the old Police Squad TV show (6 episodes) that predates and which led to the Naked Gun movies. The TV show is pretty fun, and the first film is great - though the later films start to get a bit lame.

And speaking of 80s comedies that start out pretty strong and eventually get lamer and lamer, the Police Academy franchise is another pretty good example. The franchise as a whole tends to have a (well-deserved) bad reputation because the later films are absolutely terrible, but the first few are actually pretty damned good.

tbh, I had to watch Clue quite a few times before I started to like it.

It's quite possibly one of my favorite comedies of all time. The dialogue is just so perfectly written and equally perfectly performed that it just flows from one line to the next. It's almost more like poetry than humor.

A friend and I actually started adapting it into a stage play version at one point, before life kind of got in the way. That same friend and a couple of others occasionally talk about going out as the characters for Halloween, and that same friend went to a murder mystery dinner/weekend thing where they got to play the characters (sadly, I couldn't go).

Between that and the VCR game (also from the 80s!), I've always been a huge fan of the franchise in general (which is why, when I ran my first Mafia game on Paradiso, I based it around Clue).
