Democrats in Washington State are in a battle with Kooky Republicans after they thought they had passed a routine sex educatino requirment for all public schools earlier this year but a coalition from the right and religious conservawhackos launched a swift and historic backlash that's led to a bitter partisan fight to OVERTURN the measure this November!!

The famously liberal state say they want to protect young people from sexual abuse, disease and infections but pissed off conservatives have taken issue with it and want local control

This is the first time inthe country that such a decision on sex ed will be decided by voters

Kindergarteners would be taught how to manage feelings and make friends while older kids will learn about consent and how to respond to violence and face issues regarding LGBTQ

29 states plus Washington DC require schools to teach sex ed but it never appeared on any ballots but instead debated at school boards

Now the right-wing group Parents for Safe Schools forced this to be an election issue with 264,000 signatures, the most gathered for a referendum to overturn the bill of 40 years which has the double of minimum number of signatures needed

Mindie Wirth, a tech company manager and lives in Bothell was aided by Catholic church parishes who served the signatures and said "It feels like we're just not being listened to and i think this is a very large part of what this reprsents" said the one time Republican who lost state senate

Courtney Normand, director of Planned Parenhood is leading the campaign for the bill who said this is turning partisan rather than intention on student safety

PP received 1.1 million in contributions to support sex ed while Republican backers got 245,000.

Republicans slammed sex ed that dictates what is covered and that it is heavy handed. They oppose pre-marital sex and sex ed will push kids to engage in it.

Mario Villanueva said "When you get into issues of how do you say yes or how do you say, that can easily open the door to that. It's OK. It's OK to say yes and no"

Maia Espinoza, a Republican and single mother who had a child at 19 is running against Superintendent Chris Reykdal as she's horrified of the sex ed mandate and wants it eliminated as she blames it for getting PREGNANT as a teen.

Claire Wilson, a Democrat sponsored this bill based on her experience as educator and working with pre-teen mothers after hearing from people who didn't even know the words needed to describe sexual abuse who said this is not teaching sex and it never has or ever will be.

I went to Catholic school and the extent of my sex education was "don't have sex. but if you do make sure it's with a married catholic woman" so by that standard, please don't fucking do that to kids, please give them proper education.

Abstinence-only education does not reduce the age of first sexual activity and does not reduce the number of sexual partners of adolescents.

Abstinence-only education not only doesn't work in accomplishing its goal, but it leads to clear increases in STI, pregnancy, and sexual abuse.

These people aren't being listened to (as they complain in the linked article) because they are not worth listening to.

In terms of actual results (increasing age of first sexual contact, reducing STI transmission rates, reducing unplanned pregnancy rates), objective evidence is overwhelmingly in favour of comprehensive sex ed, with no sex ed at all being a distant second, and abstinence-only sex ed being even worse than none at all. This isn't even a matter of opinion. It is a fact that comprehensive sex ed is the best option for teens' sex lives (or lack thereof).

Sex Ed is important, but the problem with current programs is how it turns into a politically charged platform these days.

I mean, when I did Sex Ed in school, it was simple. "This is a Penis, This is a Vagina", "Tab A goes into Slot B, makes the babies", "Wrap that stump before you hump....or you get the AIDS...and your college plans are shot.".....simple.

Now, 20 years later, my kid is taking the same program, but not the same content. They spend less time on the practical conventions of sex, and more about trying to identify 20 different genders on the spectrum, which has nothing to do with what Sex Ed is supposed to be about.

Same. All the straight kids humped like rabbits. Most had at least 4 partners by the end of 10th grade. Dont expect kids to listen to faith based beliefs. If you are youre a moron.

What do you mean 'what sex Ed is supposed to be about?' learning about sex and gender, learning about how people fundamentally identify and think about themselves in relation to sex and gender, seems both pretty important and pretty related to the topic.

this is why i dislike the religious right, despite me being religious. Im socially liberal/libertarian and fiscally libertarian, but I used to be socially and fiscally conservative. Theres huge fear over there.
