1 - The level up button in the corner doesn't level up the character. It puts you on a screen where you have to expend the regular game currency and then your character shoots up a bunch of levels.

Ah, well, that's how you do it. You also have to use exp items plus the currency. Sounds like you were doing it correctly though.

for exp you're using up the EXP books you get. if that's what you mean then yes, that's the main method of raising EXP.

regarding new skills:
dupes = constellations, which unlock stuff. MC will get these through the game, the first one you can buy from the jewel icon person in town, even.
ascending = new skills as well, means you hit the level cap and unlock the next batch of levels.

healing without food: level up, goddess statues, certain characters like Barbara.

No, I meant gold, whatever it's called in this game. The basic shop currency. That feels like a really clumsy system, buying your XP. I was pretty certain my main leveled to 5 on their own.

Oh yea you get XP from killing mooks and completing major quests too. But often times it's kinda pittance compared to leveling with books.

Gold seems like a resource you don't pay attention to until it stops scaling with the cost of upgrading gear.

oh, yeah. gold is used up too and will be a limiting factor for you and weapons.
basic rule seems to be that you really only want to focus on 2-3 characters as it gets expensive. you can probably ascend everyone once and be fine but later ones... not so much.

I think leveling Artifacts and Weapons will end up being the real gold drain.

The view from the peak of Mt. Tianheng is incredible. The entire Liyue region is breathtaking really.

Fighting in those Liyue mountains is a pain. Big, dumb hillichurls keep throwing themselves off the cliff, triggering a respawn process which heals them to full...

Decided to make some wishes this morning and pulled my first Fischl. Question for gacha veterans. The banners guarantee a 4-star item every 10 wishes. If I make wishes 1 at a time and get a 4-star on my first wish, does it reset the guarantee, or can I then go 19 wishes until my next 4-star?

It resets. If 1 is 4-star, 11 is your next guarantee.

The gacha stuff is there, but I'm generally playing the game while ignoring it. As long as you don't mind that there's a bunch of different resource and leveling systems, you can generally tune out the monetization. There's one moment about an hour in where it hits you with it, and then it doesn't really make a big deal after that. Or at least that's been my experience so far, at 8 hours or so.

I pulled Fischl twice on consecutive packs. What makes her better than my starting archer?

Her bird is that good. It can keep debuffing enemies with Electro while you attack with a different element with another character. You can get a lot of powerful elemental reactions this way.

Was able to ascend Noelle so now she can be back in my party without it being sort of a waste. Liyue has all sorts of cool shit to find and I still keep running into new monsters to fights which is cool.

Her E (Oz) will proc Electro multiple times over a spawn of 6 seconds and persists when you change characters, You can multiple elemental burst procs with it. It has about a 50% up time too. With super you can a 100% uptime for 3 rotation.

Beyond that. Her burst is better than Amber and her autoattacks are stronger too. Electro as an element tends to be the one that synergizes the most with the current 6 elements. Since I think it works with everything but Geo.

Electro with water is persistent damage.
Electro with fire is overload.

Both are very good damage and you're guaranteed Barbara still, who should be in your team for difficult content anyway. We have both Amber and later on the Chinese chef girl for fire users, so she's going to mix very well for F2P.

As others have said you can largely ignore it. As long as 1) you aren't intending to do a lot of pulls and 2) you don't cave to "oh that's a lot of nice bonuses you can get" syndrome, you'll be fine. The game is F2P friendly, especially with the free units and currency they're giving out.

Wait, who's Barbara and why am I guaranteed her? Is she awarded after a quest, like Lisa and whatshisface?

Sytha, by "her E," do you mean the bird? I feel like whenever I use it it just sits there, so I guess I need to L2P. In that regard, is it normal to switch characters within a fight? I generally just find someone I like for those enemies, except maybe if I need to burn a shield. (And honestly, the only reason I keep Amber around is because I find myself needing fire, whereas I already have two other electric users.)

Sidenote: I made the possible mistake of learning the game on a controller, thinking that if it was a spiritual successor to Breath of the Wild, it seemed like a controller sort of game. Aiming would have been much easier with keyboard+mouse, and the camera controls are often painful, but the most annoying part of using the controller, honestly, is that the role of A and B in menus is backwards.

You need to get to AR20 before the 1.1 update, then you can claim Barbara as an event reward. She's a water 4* healer who's pretty strong.

You get her for free when you hit Adventure Rank 20. I think its totally normal to swap characters during battle a lot. I always use Noelles barrier, then Barbaras healing and then switch to Xiangling to start a fire and Vaporize enemies or to MC and start doing damage since she has my best weapon so far.

If you hit rank 20 before 1.1, you get Barbara for free. Water catalyst user, one of the best healers. They've yet to announce when 1.1 hits but we should have some warning.

Fischel's E = oz = bird, all mean the same thing. Use it close to enemies and it'll zap people around it.

And yes, you're supposed to constantly be switching characters to apply multiple elemental effects/use different specials/different movements/for tanking. Switching units is the main battle mechanic of the game.

Switching around is optimal. Most of your damage will come from elemental reactions.

What's weird is that it seems on PC, if you use controller, Circle is confirm. But if you play on PS4, X is confirm.

Ugh, I just spent my whole afternoon at this game. ALevel 17, and decided to take a break to explore. Went all the way to Lixue. That view of the harbor is spectacular.

Finished the Stormterror quest last night. I liked it. Gotta admit, Venti annoyed me at first, but he grew on me. I especially liked his dynamic with Paimon. Need to do the trial with him so get a real feel for his play, because I don't feel the need to spend wishes to get him.

Venti is absurd. His Hold E is an anywhere super jump that lets you go vertical about 2.5 fast climb options. Lets you glide longer distances and reach higher places with less stamina.

His E and Q are up all the time too. His E is quite spammable. and his Q is hard CC on nonBosses that procs Anemo like a dozen times.

Most people consider him the best character in the game. (If it isn't Fischl)

Sounds like he may be too good to not attempt to get with his banner. I like my current team (Amber, Barbara, Kaeya, Lisa) though, even if the free knights aren't considered very good.

Kaeya and Barbara are really good IMO.

Amber is great for exploration too.

Lisa tho yea... She is very outclassed by Fischl in like every way is the real issue with her. But if you don't have Fischl I think she can work as a substitute I think.

Kaeya I think best syngerizes with Melee heavy teams and Barbara works with like every team that could use Heals.

I wish I had an ice user who wasnt Kaeya, but its already hard enough to make a party with all the options. Still running MC, Noelle, Xiangling and Barbara since theyre all around lv40. I do have Fischl with a dupe, but havent actually used her yet. Some of the enemies are pretty tough, but mostly because its more difficult to level up weapons and artifacts than anything else

Man, that Stormterror fight is garbage. Hit his hands, he becomes vulnerable and...sits there while you can't hit him. Melee can't get to the weak spot. Ranged aim at it from the ground and hit the side of his head instead. After like 20 minutes I died, having gotten him to 80%. I'd understand if I could attack while gliding, or if there were a way to swiftly climb onto his head, but nah. Just have to attack from afar and hope you have a good angle.

Diluc is fun, kind of annoyed I got Barbara since she's a freebie later.

I attacked the claws whenever he grabbed the ledge. I'd shoot him otherwise, unless I was busy not getting hit

I lost Venti before I had a chance to figure out his controls and get a handle on the fight. When I go in there again, I'll assume using him well is pivotal since any other time the game gives you a guest character, you can basically solo the dungeon with them.

Beat the dragon. Still wasn't a fun fight. I get the impression I should learn keyboard and mouse, given how Menji implied he was hitting the neck to lower the shield, which I couldn't do. Some other controller grievances, too.
