I felt that way when I watched part 3 but then I got to part 4 and the creativity that we got from the stands was way higher than anything that couldve been possible with hamon

Magicians Red shoots fire.

Hamon magnetizes leaves and controls dead bodies like marionettes.

Which is harder to understand? ;p

Hamon has absolutely no consistency, outside of "hurts vampires". You need rules for a good powerset fight, and hamon is just anything, at any time, with no explaining how it works.

Like, we establish it can travel through organic material and stick stuff together. Alright, cool. How the hell did you make a bulletproof barrier out of hair? Not even a lot of hair!

stands do allow for some really creative powers for sure. of course i have to concede that.

but hamon is all about how skilled and clever the user is. stands are about who lucked into the more busted power. Jojo versus acdc, jojo vs wham, jojo vs kars. there's no topping it. it's an insult to even try.

That is a failing of the author, rather than the rules applied. Hamon has minimal set rules, so you don't have much logic to follow; nothing comes across as clever, just flashy.

Stands do have rules, it's just Araki keeps breaking them, and that actually damages the series quite a bit for me.

Giorno I can somewhat forgive, since Araki realizes how broken attack reflection is and just forgets about it almost immediately instead of half-assing it through the series.

Buccellati splitting himself on the train was still stupid as hell though.

Basically this. It was cool for a bit but they changed it to stands at the perfect time.

i guess this is why persona is so popular. people prefer characters just being innately stronger as opposed to characters strategizing and overcoming tougher foes through sheer determination

jonathan and dio, joseph and straits, joseph and the pillar men

the only stand fight to approach those levels is Jotaro vs Dio

What? Strategizing barely existed pre part 4. You must have stopped watching after 3.

I feel like you're arguing the wrong side here lol the strategizing really starts when the stands are introduced.

Stands are better just because they open up a basically infinite amount of storytelling options. Hamon is cooler flavor wise, though, and I wish it hadn't been almost completely abandoned.

in part 5, maybe. in parts 3 and 4? it's just about who's innately stronger. the only stratagem involved is jospeh's failed hamon stand and jotaros magnets and heartbeat. as for part 4, i cant remember strategy ever mattering. josuke literally just ignores rohans power because he's mad

i cant speak for part 6 because i dont remember much about it, but in part 7 there is plenty of strategy involved i'll grant you that. johnny and caesar are some intuitive motherfuckers

What? Tons of Part 3 fights are all about controlling space, utilizing the environment, and fooling the opponent into a disadvantageous position.

Polnaraff - Avdol faked him out.
Tower of Gray - needed Kakyoin.
Devil - some mirror bullshit or something, Polnaraff was trapped underneath a bed and didnt have use of his normal line of sight.
Lovers and Hanged Man both required forcing the opponent into a certain path/predicting their movements.
Mariah had her own powers flipped on her.

and even some of the more straight forward fights like Pet Shop or the sword were pretty close or had some interesting gimmick

I liked hamon, but you had to be an expert in it to do anything, but with stands, anyone (or anything) can be a threat

Magician's Red was a simpler time. Now every stand has to have like six different abilities and control time

It's just as inconsistent as any other Shonen power system, and Araki was clearly running out of ideas for it in Part 2.

Having a cat or a baby or a particularly well-fed houseplant developing a Stand and causing a ruckus is fun, but Hamon was more interesting. Controlling breath is hard to do even in the real world and focusing on doing so while in the midst of a battle, training exercise or life trauma would be even cooler. There was more zen and more homoeroticism with the Hamon-age storytelling and I preferred it.

I've never made it through part one. It's so bad.

Is it worth pushing through it?
Part 2 is way better, but then part is more boring than part 1 despite the fact that the power system completely changes. I liked part 4 a lot but then part 5 was just as bad as part 3. So its a series that has an inconsistent level of quality but theres a lot of hilarious and weird shit going on that makes you stick with it. I guess its worth it so you can get some context for the shows memes
