This game does a really good job of making you feel like you're getting better with each run. Like, my first few runs I was struggling in asphodel, and now I get to hades consistently and I think I'm getting the hang out that fight without relying on crutch boons. And I've only had about 21 total runs!

I know a lot of it is stuff like extra death defiance stacks and other mirror buffs, but theres more to it - like, I just feel like I just do better against bosses than even just a day or so ago.

it's okay the purple ones are mostly the best IMO aside from the Soul one and the Epic vs Duo/Legendary

specific builds aside. Well, healing from darkness is probably better early on than healing per room as I think someone in this topic said

I would recommend swapping the one that gives you 3 health per new room to the alternative that gives you health whenever you pick up darkness. You get 60% of the darkness as health which is often more healing than you'd get from the rooms.

Also the death defiance alternative gives you unlimited uses but it can only be used once per encounter. I think that one is better for new players also if you're struggling getting to bosses.

man I've never even come close to affording that, but I religiously spend my money. I thought I'd have it one run when I entered elysium with like 1k, but then i bought EVERYTHING

I got like one or two hits away from beating the boss of Elysium on my first attempt. Annoyingly I died by dashing into one of the purple rings just as the attack was erupting. I think I hurt myself in the fight by accepting the cast boon from Aphrodite, because having to get up really close to them to cast is not good. Without that boon I think I would've been able to deal more damage from a safe distance and would've won. On top of that I also shortened my range on the bow attack by accepting the twin shot upgrade earlier too. Well I still needed both of them for the fates checklist so oh well.

Darkness heal is kind of garbage after you are clearing the first few worlds. The last couple worlds have pretty much no darkness you would want to pick up and its when you need healing the most

only time I ever buy it is if I am already absolutely crushing with my build and I have confidence I will win without a single extra upgrade

This is true but bosses also drop darkness if you've already cleared their bounty. My health is usually full between rooms so I don't need the +3 but I'm definitely going to take some hits against bosses. The darkness + fountain combo usually means I have full health starting the next floor.

I think it's better for new players but yeah the +3 is probably better for experienced players

earlier in pre-release that Boon was pretty powerful, they ended up shortening its range a bit and I think also reducing how powerful it is (though it still is the largest increase in Cast damage from any god). Also it has a weird interaction with Bow Aspect of Hera where it wont hit targets when you load it into an arrow for some reason.

23 runs so far. Think I'm up to 6 deaths to Theseus. Gonna see about finally finishing off the Hydra with the one weapon I have left next. Just unlocked the mirror skill that raises base health. That would have been nice, oh, an eternity ago.

I made it to Styx but died at the boss. Neat that I'm seeing new stuff on this run, though. Boon from Demeter and a new monster in Tartarus. Chill seems pretty cool. Dont know what ambrosia is used for yet. Doesn't seem like I can give it as a gift, and the only use I see so far is trading it for titan blood at the broker. But as it seems like a rare material, I'm not gonna do that. At least not yet.

The shield upgrade that turns the Bull Smash or whatever attack into a projectile is so good. It feels cheap to just sit there and tank attacks and then shoot off an attack and then immediately block the next attacks again. It's the second weapon I've beat Elysium with now.

Aww yeah, sweet escape. I was curious how it was gonna work to send Zagreus back down (because I knew the game obviously doesn't end after one escape), whether it was gonna make narrative sense or it just being something that happens, and I was happy with the execution. I wouldn't have won if not for being able to buy two DD replenishments, lol. I needed all 4 DDs I'd accumulated and even then it was close.

Side note: Poseidon's cast boon is really good for those small rooms in Styx. The enemies all there in close quarters, getting blasted into the walls for more impact damage (and I had the boon where wall slams have increased damage, AND the duo boon where knockback causes extra lightning damage too).

I was curious about the screen after beating the final boss. It had all my boons show up, and selecting one looked like I was unequipping it. I'm not sure what the point of that was. Is it just for screenshot purposes? Like a hey look, I beat the game using this set up! kinda thing?

spear has such a bad ratio because I tried using the weird secret version a few times and its hard
sword has a bad ratio because its the first one obvi and also I was kinda bad at it at first

I almost always choose the weapon with the aura, which almost never shows up on the gun for some reason. If im ranking my preference so far I think its bow > fists > gun > shield > spear > sword but theres obviously variations in play and I havent tried all of them (or even unlocked the last two of them) yet.

Clearly I should stop choosing Curse of Pain. Static Discharge is the one that adds Jolt to electric stuff. It seems super necessary to me if youre gonna have any electric attacks.

Least used:
theres still one Dionysus boon Ive never picked. Its called High Tolerance and it makes you take reduced damage in Festive Fog. Ive only even taken Festive Fog three times so yeah.
Otherwise Ive used every regular boon at least once.

Aspects:
7/12 bow runs have been Aspect of Chiron (Makes your special have fewer arrows but home in on last enemy you attacked). It seems really good.

Keepsakes:
Ive used the coin purse 33 times. I equip it for the first floor of any serious attempt. Its been in 17 of my 19 clears.
After that, sometimes I use the god-specific keepsakes to find specific boons on the second/third floors
otherwise I use the super secret Pom blossom or the skull earring (damage up when low on health). Used the Spearpoint that makes you temporarily invincible after getting hit on a couple specific builds too and it worked out.

and then theres a bunch I equipped like once to complete the quest and never again

also still getting lots of new dialogue even fifty runs in

I love this game. I will probably do another fifty runs.

Just got it yesterday, it's really nice so far. It does feel like you can beat every screen without getting hurt despite being a fast action game. That was my biggest concern as a Necrodancer player.

On my 2nd run I best the first boss which was surprising too. Seems like the game isn't too hard at it's base and has difficulty modifier for later. I feel like I got lucky with rare abilities, which feels pretty sweet but might be a frustrating amount of RNG later on.

The presentation is bursting with detail and charm but I wonder how far that will carry it.

Managed to get a run in 21 minutes 4 seconds, fastest one yet.

Have yet to get any of the secret aspects unlocked. Or any companions.

Wow the extreme measures 3rd boss took all 3 of my lives but I still managed to beat the last boss. I can't imagine the final boss with extreme measures.

The 3rd boss with extreme measures was the first time where I felt like I legitimately couldn't avoid damage in some situations but I'm sure it'll get better as I keep playing.

I fought the third boss with extreme measures for the first time last night, and it was so good. Completely changes the fight, at least the first half. Really liked the changes.

I didn't see much of the second half of theseus since i had an aphrodite greater call so i just killed him after his invuln period. It looked like it was going to be more of the same though.

Looking forward to seeing extreme measures on the final boss

The second half is identical as far as I know. Maybe if Asterius is still around they might have a new team-up move or something but I've never let that happen in the first place.

yeah thats how ive felt. It makes me too fragile. Maybe its really good in other peoples hands but it doesnt seem to suit me.

I mean you really only use the charge on the Guan Yu spear when you need some healing, otherwise it's not very strong. The special attack is where it's at with that spear.

I'm at about 60 runs and 35 hours but I think I'm reaching the point where I've had my fill. I mean that's a lot longer than I've spent with some other recent roguelikes like One Step from Eden so I'd say that's a pretty good number.

I think the weapon and run variety is just a little too low for a game like this to keep me hooked for 200 hours like Binding of Isaac did. The story is great and I'm glad it's drawing a lot of people into a genre they don't normally enjoy but I think I would have personally preferred less story and more weapons/variety in runs.

But I'm just nitpicking, this is still a 9/10 game.

I seem pretty bad at this. 30 attempts and I haven't even beaten the Elysium boss. I did get very close, though.

Beat Tartarus with all 6 weapons. Beat Asphodel with Rail Gun and Shield. I just lost 3 lives entirely to the Butterfly mini-boss. I can't believe I have to deal with the butterflies and respawning minions.

I dunno how you all get the Sword to work. It's easily the worst of the weapons for me. Got all Keepsakes so far except Aphrodite, Ares, Poseidon, and Chaos. I haven't met the secret room for Elysium yet.

Third escape just now, Heat 1 with the bow. As soon as I left I got a legendary boon from Poseidon for more fishing opportunities. I ended up catching two fish on the surface, and boy was I surprised to see the chef give me a diamond and titan blood in exchange.

Also on that run I got the Demeter/Aphrodite duo casting boon, and it did a lot in making the final boss go down quickly. It helped that I also had two other Demeter support casting boons to extend the timeframe and add chill. I also had Weak on my special with two support boons to extend both the length and strength of the status. Chill and Weak together is pretty cool I guess.

Unrelated but I also noticed I don't seem to have a prophecy for acquiring Aphrodite's boons for some reason.

Anyway, I guess the point of this post is that, with three successful runs so far, I'm surprised at how much content is still left to unlock. That's not to mention those mystery slots at the bottom of the artifacts cabinet, the other locked room in the House, the locks encountered when I've gifted gods a bunch of nectar, whatever unlocks the fourth aspect for each weapon, the last undiscovered tab of the codex (maybe this is for companions?), the last undiscovered location in the codex... Wow.

yeah I noticed the companions on my record pretty far into my fifty runs and hadnt discovered them yet.

I have now. I wont spoil how they come about, but youre right about them being the last codex section.

Also the pact benefits thing is in reference to the buffs that armored enemies get when you turn on that part of the pact. You should have access to it now if you have the pact in the first place.

also also eventually your access to the administrative room will pay off for some diamonds from a prophecy, but youre probably a long time from the situation where that will happen still.
