*Offer only available for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. A trial of the full game is available for download now and can be played from 10 AM PST/1 PM EST on September 23rd until 11:59 PM PST on September 29th. If the game is purchased after the trial period ends, progress will carry over. The game will be discounted until October 6th (discount value pending).

Basically a free 6-day rental. Dunno how many people are out there that are interested in this that don't already own the game, given that it's five years old, but I figure it can't hurt to get the word out.

I already own this (physical copy) but if you're even remotely interested in the series or sRPGs in general you should for sure pick this game up. The complete version is even better as you can grab all the extra characters and etc from the DLC guy right in the main hub right away. I have Laharl, Etna, and Flonne from the first game on my main team for example.

I've been on a mega detour from the main storyline for the past ~110 hours or so in the Item World. Technically I'm still on Chapter 3 but most of my guys are level 400-something.

I've actually got Disgaea 2 sitting in my Steam library waiting for attention, but the time-sensitive nature of this one is going to prompt me to play it first. I very much have my doubts that I'll get through it all in a week, given how Disgaea 1 went (How Long to Beat is saying ~55 hours for the main story, 300+ for completionist, which sounds about right), but we'll see how it goes.

If nothing else, I really like the idea of having rentals like this paired with discounts, so I'm all for telling Nintendo that by taking advantage of it.

I have Disgea 2 for the PS2 but haven't played it in years. I think you can also get Adell and co. as playable units in D5 but I'd need to check. My takeaways from that one were that the characters were less interesting but the gameplay is much improved over D1. Even tweaking it so that guns could only fire in a straight line was a huge improvement, as it made bows viable again for example.

I think the main thing with these games is that they don't take very long to beat for the main story but all the extra stuff requires you to be leveled up to some obscene amount. Priere (sp?) from the first game was level 2000 IIRC. At this point in D5 I'm more than capable of blowing through the main missions but there's just a certain something that keeps me saying "Oh, I can just level up this guy's shield a little bit more first" and I haven't been doing it.

Wow that is not "free".
If it were actually free I'd have gotten a month of NSO and gotten the game.
Why is NSO such a scam?

Yeah it's more of a limited run demo if you already have NSO. A free trial, not a free game. As for NSO I wish there were a way to purchase regular NES / SNES games without having to buy a subscription too but what can you do?

That is what I've heard. It's very much one I'm meaning to play, but that's how backlogs do sometimes.

Yep. Presuming the rest of the series is anything like 1 (which I understand is the case), the real meat of the game is in the postgame grinding to absurd levels. IIRC, the final boss of 1 was level 85, which was reasonable for how much you'd level just going through the story, but then there was at least one superboss that was 6000 or 8000 (and you wouldn't stand a chance without a buttload of reincarnations and some Item World-boosted gear, so it wasn't even just the levels). The fact that the announcement trailer for 6 made specific mention of the fact that damage could go into the quadrillions really kind of reflects the series focus on gratuitously large numbers.

"They're not letting me buy a $45 game for $4. What a scam."

Yeah... not so much. As I said, it's basically a free rental for subscribers (or a $4 rental for people who want to just buy a single month to get in on it). Just like the game rentals of yore, you can potentially satisfy your desire to play the game if you can put in enough time during the rental period, and thereby avoid buying the game later, but it's not meant to be a giveaway.

Great, Epic game store has actually free games every single week.

Not sure who cares about a glorified trial.

Not sure who cares about a glorified trial.

Presumably, people who are currently subscribed to NSO and are interested in Disgaea 5 but have not yet decided to purchase it.

That reminds me, I haven't checked them lately. I should see what's there.

Apparently Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 is free starting tomorrow. That's nifty. I'll have to remember to pop in and grab that.
