well, the secret gun aspect felt pretty terrible when I tried to use it once. too much standing around trying to use the beam, and the special is too slow

This is the only negative thing I have about the game right now. Those items are hard to come by and you can't get them back like you can with the Dark souls. This wouldn't be a big issue, but it changes the way the weapon works so much that it's a big risk to spend a Titan Blood on something that might be a lot worse for you to use.

guess I spoke too soon, did a clear with the Lucifer aspect. The upgrade that lets you use the special 3 times in a row was key. just spammed it everywhere and lured monsters into them. one bomb getting hit set off a chain reaction and exploded everything

Any Switch users in here who have a good alternate control scheme that works really well for them? The default setup isn't terrible but can get kinda clunky to use at times.

is there anything specific you did to get the lucifer aspect? i have over 60 runs and frequently run into zeus but his bitchass isnt giving me anything.

Completed my first run with the rail, no aspect upgrades, and really no boon focus lol it was dope but hard as shit. Now I unlocked the bounties and I really like that system to keep the game fresh.

Hades is a 2D game with no real-time 3D rendering. That means every single frame of Zagreus animation exists as a unique image.

For example, when Zagreus shoots his bow (the standard attack), it's a 104-frame animation rendered at 32 angles. So that's 3,328 frames for that one short animation. We also have two alternate Weapon Aspects (and later will add another), bringing that number up to 9,984 since our Weapon Aspects are 'reskins' of each weapon.

The idea of an alternate 'skin' for Zagreus would mean dramatically compounding these types of large frame counts, having big implications on the game's file size and other technical aspects such as the memory requirement. In other words, if we had 'skins' for Zagreus it would mean having to multiply our entire already-substantial animation set. On top of that we would have to redraw all of Zagreus' character portraits during story scenes. And this would be for just one alternate 'skin'.

I think what players want out of systems like this is full customization, e.g. changing outfits piece by piece, adjusting colors, hats, pauldrons, ankle guards, you name it. This is the sort of thing that's quite feasible in 3D engines because you can just swap out a different 3D mesh/texture while reusing the same animation data. It's also possible in 2D games with less animation content (e.g. the classic Diablo games did it). In our game, though, it's the sort of thing that's beyond the capacity of our small team, at least not without making huge sacrifices to other parts of the game.

We love our proprietary engine and tools, which helps gives Hades its crisp responsive feel and graphic novel look; we have no plans to switch to different tech, since our tech is so good at letting us create many types of content efficiently. So this is one of those trade-offs for everything else our tech does well.

I get why this type of feature is desirable as many action RPGs have it. Hopefully in the context of Hades, it's reasonable that a character like Zagreus has his signature outfit and isn't worried about changing out of it.

I really love how the powerful platforms of today enable devs to do stuff like this. Imagine 10-15 years ago, technical skill was a much bigger threshold to producing something that looks good. Now we can just brute force things like this with little consequence.

True, but if you're still on Heat 0 then you're 100% capable of beating the game with default aspects at level 1, instead focusing on mirror upgrades and gitting gud.

Honestly, just focus on unlocking aspects for now and find something that you click with. The leveling will come as part of the "postgame"

Remap Y attack to right trigger, makes dash attacking so much easier and the god call to Y instead.

Makes dash-attack so much easier, game actually felt like easy mode once i made the switch.

not sure exactly what triggers it. He gave me the unlock phrase when I got one of his boons in the first room of a new run. But I forget what exactly I progressed the night before. Cleared with the sword secret aspect, collected all the keepsakes(including Hadess), cleared a 5 heat run

Im guessing youve gotten to the real ending by now? Not sure what exactly triggers that either

Some people theorize that dialogue gets queued up such that you can theoretically do the prerequisite for an event to occur but since theres so much dialogue in the game the stuff that happens before that has to happen first

yeah Ive noticed this. Some characters will mention stuff that happened a few runs earlier even though I had talked to them after every run

Anyone else having an issue with the final boss's lasers occasionally piercing the pillars? It only happens when he stops flush against one of them, and I can only conclude it's unintentional jank where if the beam starts inside the pillar it goes through because reasons.

I've lost a few runs because of it and it's moderately frustrating because by the time I recognize it's happening, I'm ded. And I should be 3 wins deeper because each time it's killed me, it's been on the last 10%. >_>

Yeah and depending on what your setup is you can even get free damage when that attack is being used

Gods bless the Lightning Rod boon.

Thing is so broken period, and it just wrecks bosses. If I get Zeus or Artemis, I always force the other because it's soooo good for so little effort. And it's even better if doing a high attack rate weapon since chain lightning and Artemis' arrow boon are good for those.

The issue is that I cant easily beat it. I cant beat it at all and I need have enough to buy some in the last store even if I make it there

if spent my stuff on the Sword to make a casting build and im not good with it so Ive wasted 3 very important gems for a weapon I dont like. If I put them one one I do, I might be able to beat the game

Use a different weapon then. Sword is hard mode because you have virtually no range to cheese the last boss with so you need to be more familiar with his patterns

So I love the regular shield but the one that goes off until you call it back is super hard to use effectively. I got to the last boss and got spanked after the revive. Poseidon dash boon and the extra wall damage boon really carried me in that run.

When the final boss does the beam thing, it's possible to stand on top of him and take no damage.

titans bloods really arent that rare, once you start clearing heat runs you get 2 per run. Ive only made it up to heat 5 and I just spent like 12 bloods yesterday and still have 4 more.

how many escape attempts have you done? I didnt get a clear until my 17th or 18th, all the deaths before that are how you progress. Best thing to focus on is getting everyones keepsakes and unlocking the mirror.

Yeah, but even if you collect all of the Titan's Blood from bounties you still won't have enough to max out weapons. That's why some runs I try to save money and buy whatever the expensive item is in the last area

Yeah I didn't upgrade any weapons and won with the rail for my first. I would say just invest in mirror stuff and find a boon combination you like. the game is hard but it gives you a lot of ways to make it not so hard.

I do much better on the Switch because I went with the Shield and not the sword.

well I started watching that run and right off the bat you're spending shadow on other stuff when you don't have the 3rd death defiance. use a key and reset your stuff and get all 3 levels.

Help all you want. It's not going to make me not upset that you can't get your Titan Blood back like you can with the Black Souls, lol. I happen to like the Shield upgrade that makes it just hang out there until you call it back, but I can see how that would make it a lot harder to use. If you didn't know what the upgrade did, then you're fucked if you can't easily use the new way to throw the shield.

Also, I didn't get the second death defy because then I was just trying to get more and more drops [Gems] so I can see what those new upgrades unlock [health in pots, for example]

But yeah, keep the tips coming if you don't mind. I'm going to start up another run to record now before I head to sleep

The keepsake from Dusa did help me a lot too before I could beat the last boss. Good way to stabilize hp between rooms without having to spend all your gold on health restores

So I watched your videos and I'll jot down a few tips based on my own experience. Do with them what you wish :-)

• I greatly prefer the green reroll thing instead of the purple one. So I can reroll which boons I'm offered, rather than which gods. This in combination with picking the keepsakes of the gods you want greatly helps in forcing a desired build. Which will make your runs a lot more consistent. I tend to prioritize finding the right boons early on.
• If you're struggling, I would focus on builds that use the shield or spear special so you can apply damage safely and without being locked to one place for too long. For the spear, I do Chain Skewer or Exploding Launcher. For the shield, I honestly don't think any hammer upgrade is amazing for this strategy. Dread Flight makes it take way too long to return.
• For boons I pick ones with curses that have a lot of impact with just one hit. Preferably Poseidon or Zeus, since their respective curses (Rupture and Jolted) are very strong and add a lot of damage. Their duo boon is also strong. If you go with Zeus and Ares, their duo is great to just stack revenge boons. Adds a lot of passive damage to enemies. I greatly prefer Athena's dash to all the others, since it's one of the easiest ways to reflect projectiles IMO (the other being Athena's sword special but that's another story). This saves a lot of damage for the times you dodge in the wrong direction/timing is off.
• One of the most important things for many builds is to have access to two easily applicable curses/status effects. This activates Privileged Status which is a massive boost to your damage. Look for curses that last for a long time. Demeter's does, Jolted and Rupture do, Aphrodite's can get increased duration.
• Finally, I get the feeling from watching your fight against Theseus and Asterius that either you don't know their patterns very well, or you're a bit impatient. For Asterius, keep away when he swings, then dash straight at him when he jumps so he flies past you. He'll follow up swings with his jumps 0-3 times. Give him a couple of whacks then get the hell out of there because he sometimes swings without windup. When he does the bull rush, dodge through a pillar to make him crash into it. Rinse and repeat. Keep a pillar between you and Theseus every time he wants to throw his spear (or deflect it). Once it's only Theseus left, be patient. Keep your distance and let him throw his spear. He always shows his back after, which lets you get a bunch of free hits. This way, you can focus on dodging the god's wrath and just whittle away. With a proper boon build you'll still melt them quickly. As you get more comfortable you can start being more in their face.

With the Zeus/Poseidon duo, his special will be able to apply both Rupture and Jolted, which is really optimal because then you don't have to touch the other buttons.

apparently Im too good at dodging the traps in the first 3 areas because I did a run with the 400% trap damage heat and completely forgot I even had it active until I died 3 times to the big saw blades in the satyr tunnels

I'm way too impatient to beat the last boss all that often, but I did manage to get run a second under 24 minutes with the sword! That's my best so far.
