I'm playing through the first game right now and will move on to the second after.
One thing that annoys me is how when you choose "attack" and if the enemy faints before the character attacks, the character will automatically defend, which is annoying especially for level/money grinding.
In games like Dragon Quest if you attack and one of the enemy faints, the character will just autoamtically attack a different target, but in Golden Sun the character will defend instead of just attack another target.
Was this shitty mechanic changed in the second game or not?

I believe it's even the same in the third game. You need to try to anticipate when targets are going to die and plan your attacks accordingly. It's kind of bothersome.

No. You should strategize on who you target so you don't waste turns.

In old JRPG games it was like this, in Final Fantasy one they will attack nothing if the target dies before they hit it. Modern, JRPG's have turned away from this but it was far more common in the 80s and early 90s.

I think even the first pokemon game that had doubles battle did this.

That was Ruby/Sapphire, which would have been around Golden Sun time

You should absolutely blow everything on one enemy. Send a message to the others that they are so insignificant that letting them have a few extra turns to live is a mercy you're allowing them.

It's bothersome, but kind of gratifying when you properly anticipate what attacks will finish off an enemy, so you feel more in control of the flow of battle.

This is generally what I'd do on battles with 3+ enemies (presuming you mean the AoE psynergies and not the summons). Alternate which one gets focused if there's an even number so the damage is more evenly distributed, then distribute basic attacks between whatever's left after the focused targets die. It's a bit of a pain, especially because it makes farming less mindless than is generally preferable for such grinds, but I found it was reasonably intuitive once I got the hang of it and rarely had significant issues with people wasting turns defending.

Another thing I don't like is the yes/no questions.
I was just asked "Don't you have another thing to do?" regarding rescuing Hammet and I answered yes, apparently that means I can't rescue Hammet now? The poor wording of the question made me believe that it wasn't some ultimatum and now I can't do a quest.
I like this game so far, it's just some things about it are annoying.

Yes, a lot of it is anticipating how fast or slow an enemy will die, which can be a bother if you haven't already gauged how much health an enemy has. There's merit to staying on your feet and thinking in active-time as to how to handle a fight, but this is just a nuisance when grinding turn-based battles for any reason.

There are a few parts in the both games with missable content depending on what choices you make. Make sure to get everything before playing TLA because there is content (Djinn, gear, and events...) that are either only obtained in the first game or only obtainable if you do things in the first game. Basically everything is carried over.

Basically treat both games like they're one big game and that end of Golden Sun is a point of no return.

I'm probably not gonna be able to do that if I missed stuff already. Might not be able to get everything but I'll do what I can.
Doesn't affect the ending of the second game though right?

It doesn't affect how the story ends, but missing too many djinn will prevent you from accessing the optional dungeon where the game's primary superboss is. If memory serves, TLA gives you one random missing djinn of each element from the first game, but if you're short any more than that, you'll be missing out.

You could use a password generator to give yourself the missing djinn in preparation for the next game.

You could also use that password generator to activate all the events that carry over to TLA.

It affects access to the Secret Dungeon and hardest Boss in the game.

Just an FYI if you do use the password generator (the one by Paulygon) that if you want to carry over all the events you have to leave the THIRD event check box UNCHECKED.

It's the event where (dunno if you've reached this part yet but spoilers just in case) you save Hsu from underneath the boulder.

The event flag seems to be reversed in the generator so just make sure to leave it unchecked.

I am honestly finding it just a huge chore to play through this game. I'm at the lighthouse.
The story to the game is boring. The story is one of the most important aspects to JRPGs and this is just so cliche and boring. The dialogue and writing is bad. Don't care about any of the characters. So many JRPGs out there with amazing stories and I'm wasting my time with this.
Collecting Djinnis is a chore, encounter rate is boring.
Ugh, after I'm finished this game I'm not sure I even want to play TLA. Is ANY of this improved with TLA? I might just finish the first one and never touch the series again. I am baffled at the outstanding reviews to this game. I don't understand
I also started Mother 1 on GBA and am enjoying that game waaay more, and that was originally a NES game. I feel like I should just play Mother trilogy and say fuck Golden Sun
