Welcome to my ranking of 120 user-nominated video game intros. Before I begin, what qualifies as an intro? For purposes of this topic, Im limiting it to a brief sequence (no more than a few minutes long), without meaningful player controls. The intro could be either a cinematic that plays while idle on the start screen or something you watch when the game begins (or both).
But maybe the better question is what do I consider a good video game intro? Unlike my prior ranking of TV show intros, I decided to rank these without any scoring factors. But I realized as I wrote these up, some of those same factors came into play. Above all else, a good video game intro, to me, is one that tells a story, which is meaningful even without having played the game. It also helps if its got nice visuals, good music, and a distinctive appearance, but those factors are way less important to me than the story. And a lot of the intros on this list looked nice, but were basically just a series of clips that told me nothing about the premise of the game or its characters. Ill also mention that some of my favorite games had intros that ranked surprisingly low, whereas several intros that came in near the top I had never seen before. What sets the intros near the top apart from others is how much they intrigued me and made me want to play the game. The last thing Ill say is, for lack of a scoring system, Ive organized these rankings into tiers to convey some idea what the rankings mean. Hotel Mario - hombad46 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Dv_DXqdC9k I cant say Hotel Mario was the worst thing to ever happen to Mario, since this exists: https://youtu.be/nltvnKZnm7o But this intro is trash, and not even trash thats at least arguably got some humor value like the Zelda CD-i intro, which is also on the list (thanks for nominating both, hombad). The animation is ugly, Bowsers over-the-top evil laugh doesnt fit the tone of the sequence or his appearance, Luigi is a stereotype obsessed with spaghetti, and the animators were so lazy they decided to cover Marios mouth with a sheet of paper to avoid having to make it move for a very long 15 seconds. But the worst part comes near the end when they inexplicably devoted a chunk of this sequence to Mario telling the players they could consult the instruction book if they need instructions on how to play. While Im not a fan of characters in a game reminding you its a video game by telling you to press the X button, at least that isnt an insult to the intelligence of the player. But the creators of this game obviously believed anyone stupid enough to have purchased this and to continue playing despite the intro would need to be told what an instruction manual is for. And because thats apparently the most important part of the sequence, more so than the half-assed plot about Koopa hotels, the screen stays frozen on Marios motionless face for about five seconds. The creature speaking for most of the intro was bad enough, with a cartoonish voice that makes Snarf from the Thundercats sound like a Shakespearean actor. And I couldnt even make out exactly what someone in the audience shouted out at 0:56, but it sure sounded like well all be fucked, followed by no ones going to be fucked on my watch. But thats nothing compared to Bubsys voice, which sounds like an inexplicable attempt to channel Steve Urkel and Rodney Dangerfield together at once. Its actually really difficult to describe just how awful his voice sounds, but thats hardly Bubsys only problem. His dialogue is also horrendous, with a joke that doesnt even make sense as a pun, and basically just comes down to the hilarity of saying the word Uranus. The rest of the script isnt much better. The sequence goes on for far too long as the alien describes the menace of Bubsy Bobcat, while an audience of fearful creatures boos (aside from the one saying Boo-ubsy). The gimmick wasnt much to work with in the first place, and it certainly didnt warrant more than three minutes. And despite its duration, the intro never even bothers to clearly explain why these aliens hate Bubsy so much (unless I drifted off and missed it out of boredom). But this intro did accomplish one thing. It persuaded me beyond any doubt this is a game I never want to play. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Wow, they made absolutely no effort to shoehorn his catchphrase into a halfway decent line. He just flat out says it after an unrelated sentence with no context, just to remind you "this is our character, he has a catchphrase, haha he says it sometimes! What a funny joke!" 118. Link: The Faces of Evil - hombad46
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6c0vDTMKlP0 What can I say about this infamous intro that hasnt already been said countless times before? Probably nothing, so Ill just have to say it again. The animation is absurd. You can pause this intro at literally any point and get a cringey image. I dont think theres even a single good frame. Worse still, the dialogue and voice acting are consistently stilted, and, in particular, Links voice and personality are obnoxious. The only moment of this intro that makes some sense is Zeldas reaction when Link tries to get a kiss. And his dumb smirk in response suggests this isnt the first time hes tried this. Even being the legendary hero (which the bearded guy has to bring a scroll to prove because nobody would believe it otherwise), Link is still too repugnant for Zelda to tolerate being in his presence for long. Then we get Link and the bearded guy on a magic carpet ride, and Link proclaims wow, what are all those heads? Since the perspective doesnt change to show the heads, its not clear what hes even talking about, at least until you see the map (which for some reason is completely blue in this video). And as if its a meaningful explanation of the plot, we get a name drop of the title that they are the faces of evil, which sounds like the name of a B-movie horror flick from the 60s or 70s. Although I can appreciate watching bad movies to rip them apart, I feel like trying to do the same with this game would wear thin very quickly. And I cant say Id have any desire to watch any more cinematics like this beyond some slight curiosity like peeking at an accident on a highway as you drive by. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Bubsy 3D was my attempt to get last place. It just droans on for too long for an early platformer game and this is made worse by the visual and audio quality.

Theres definitely a fair argument to be made for Bubsy getting last place, it absolutely was more irritating. What pushed Hotel Mario over Bubsy for the prestigious honor of last place was that it basically did everything wrong. It wasnt just awful voice acting, but also awful animation that cut corners to avoid even animating a mouth moving when speaking, awful dialogue, the screen being frozen for several seconds, Bowser not sounding like Bowser, and so on. But it was a tough call for me between the two intros.

We now come to Worst Birthday Ever Tier, consisting of intros that struck me as awkward and inexplicable.
117. Noji - UF8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IA5s23sj_AA What the hell is this? Seriously, Id like some explanation because I cant find anything about it online. So Ill just have to assume it is, in fact, an actual game, instead of a bunch of bizarre clips strewn together to simulate what its like to descend into madness. It starts out fairly grounded, devoting about the first 40 seconds to an assassin aiming a gun at a target. The sequence continues to be within the realm of sanity for a little while, albeit seeming vaguely off, with an unfinished look. But then 1:20 hits and theres no turning back. Suddenly we get a barrage of images including what looks like a smiling hamster, a letter D with arms and legs, and some random words flashing across the screen. It gets weirder still at around 1:30 when the main character pops up behind a soldier grinning like the killer in a horror movie, and just pushes the soldier over. But thats not all. Soon a character is flying through the air as if the game is glitching, and we get tons of random messages rapidly displayed like someone flipping through channels on TV. And I dont even know anymore. Perhaps theres some point to this, but I fear this intro has broken me. And before I lose the ability to write coherent sentences, I must call this write-up done. I can deal with the cheap production values and all the over-the-top and unnecessary gore, but that acting thats another story. Theres not a single decent actor in this sequence, with embarrassingly delivered lines like the guy screaming No! Dont go! at around 2:30. Then theres the character profile screens at the end where the actor playing Chris hams it up, ruining even the simple act of lighting a cigarette, the actress playing Rebecca gives a feigned smile before looking completely bored, and the guy playing Wesker. Well, okay, the guy playing Wesker is actually hilarious and easily the best part of the intro, so Ill let that one slide. To be fair, a lot of games that tried to incorporate real actors turned out much worse than this. But this intro never comes across as more than a campy low budget horror flick. ... There are no decent actors because basically it was a rushed half-ass production that used local talent and even a high school girl for Jill. She even looks all grumpy and frowny in the finished product because of mosiqutoes or some type of bug bothering her! It's both pretty hilarious and genuinely interesting too to look into. --- ... I could put that aside if the intro was otherwise decent, but the only part that works is when that monkey at the start looks up at the camera with a mischievous smirk. Aside from that, the intro is nothing but a series of desperate attempts to get a laugh with monkeys acting zany, including a trio of monkeys doing a spastic dance, and a monkey using a machine gun (which is difficult to follow because it looks like the screen is glitching when he fires). Making it even tougher to appreciate the monkeys antics is the fact that they all look the same, with the exception of the ringleader. I suppose they gave the monkey with the gun sunglasses to make him look like a gangster or something. But for the most part, it looks like they just created a single model for all the monkeys and lazily copied it over and over. Also, this entire sequence is all just to let the player know a bunch of apes have escaped, which is literally the title of the game. We learn nothing about the girl and the old guy frantically typing away at a computer, or the boy who catches one of the apes with a net. And why is the lead ape apparently intelligent enough to orchestrate this breakout, while still dumb enough to put flashing police lights on the heads of all the apes trying to evade being caught? Im guessing those devices on their heads let the ringleader control them or something, but you really cant tell much from this sequence. Finally, I found the music starting at about 0:22 really irritating. It does suit the playful vibe they seem to be going for with all the apes acting crazy, but that doesnt make it something Id like to listen to ever again. ... Copied to Clipboard!
