Doing Ultra Wormholes. In 10 wormholes I found a shiny Magcargo and a shiny Heliolisk. I've done every shiny hunting method under the sun. This is the only one that has EVER worked for me. I've hatched thousand and thousands of eggs doing the Masuda method. I've done SOS battles. I've done dexnav and horde encounters. I have literally never found any shinies doing any of these methods. The very first wormhole I went into had a shiny.

Some Pokmon have gender differences. Some like minior or alcremie have multiple different color forms.

Basically, just making each Pokemon look different from one another. Differences too minute and numerous for hunting for a specific combination to ever be worthwhile, and possibly even too subtle to really notice unless you put them side by side, but enough to make your Pokemon look different from those of other players without having to hunt for the single rare variant that exists (and hope that they don't also hunt for the same rare variant and negate whatever uniqueness you might have earned). I could get behind that, just as a minor cosmetic thing.

That would be pretty cool but sounds like an impossible amount of work unless it was automated somehow. But then you'd get really strange looking pokemon.

Ultra sun was hard. Not difficult, but the game was so similar to the original, and the endless stream of cutscenes that I already drudged through about made me quit on the first Island

Yeah I played Sun way back when it launched and didn't care for it at all. Then when I heard Ultra was just the original games slightly different I was like "eh screw that" and didn't play them for years. Just got Ultra Moon, skipped every cutscene. I enjoyed it quite a bit lol

Also if you're thinking about playing a Gen 7 game, skip Sun and Moon, only play the Ultra games. They added new Pokemon that you can't get in Sun/Moon.

I found PokeRadar chaining in XY was a pretty easy method. I got a shiny Furfrou pretty easily. I've heard chain fishing in XY was also a pretty easy method for shinies.

I never did any ultra wormholes in USUM. I just finished the story and was done with it.

Pretty much. It'd take some tweaking to make sure all of the variations were compatible with each other, but you'd just have to come up with a small handful of variations for each variable site and randomly select one when the pokemon is generated. Four sites with half a dozen variants each would give 1296 possible combinations, and that's very doable. Five would bump it up to 7776. That certainly wouldn't guarantee that any given pokemon you catch would be totally unique, but finding a twin would be unusual enough to be a remarkable coincidence, which is all that would really be needed to achieve the goal of such a system.

Honestly, a lot of potential variants for a given Pokemon have probably already been created in the form of rejected concept art (the stuff that just didn't make the final cut, not the stuff that's in the garbage because it belongs there). These designs go through so many revisions and tweaks before reaching their final forms that one could very easily populate a pool of variant appearances just by adapting those prototypes. It'd still take a non-trivial amount of work to do this for several hundred Pokemon (even if legendaries and other special ones were left out, since I think that makes sense), but it's not nearly as bad as you might think.

i had decent luck with the friend safari in XY, but the results were kinda annoyingly random.

USUM were great for shinies though, i got a lot through breeding and occasionally still hatch. worm hole shinies are relatively easy too, gotten magcargo, barbaracle, and a couple others, as well as shiny xerneas (bad nature but idc <3) and virizion.

I remember when God of War 3 came out, a point was made about how they had programmed the skeleton grunts to have randomized armor and appearances. That was kind of my line of thinking. With so many Pokemon it would be an undertaking for sure, but I'd prefer they start with a smaller number to begin with, anyway.

On the less-successful side of things, though, there's No Man's Sky, where they didn't put enough effort into making sure the random pieces fit together sensibly and ended up with some truly ridiculous-looking creatures as a result. I don't think that would be as much of an issue with Pokemon, since they'd just be making subtle randomized variations within a predefined framework, rather than randomizing the entire creature, but it's nonetheless one of the most notorious examples of this idea being taken too far.
