Sensible conservatives are being pushed out of the party as "RINOs" and the party is becoming more and more radicalized by far right conspiracy theories, anti-intelliectualism, and bigotry. These will not simply disappear if Trump loses; in fact, his loss may embolden them further and push someone even more extreme than Trump while actually being politically competent, which is a nightmare scenario for anyone who isn't a straight White Christian male.
If the Republicans are letting Trump skirt the law and have his way with the country, imagine what someone who's actually smart and has the full backing of a Republican-controlled House and Senate could do. 2024 is probably going to be the point-of-no-return for this country if the Republicans do get "Trump 2.0" elected. --- I often wonder if we are growing as a people... or in fact, regressing. ... Painting the Republican party as a bunch of QAnon supporters or crazy radicals is counter productive at this point. They're not all like that but they're all totally okay with them being in the same group. Which is different and, imo, worse.

The really fucked part of it all is that he was actually kinda liberal back in the 50s/60s. I don't know what happened that made him go fucking insane later. He got into politics campaigning for Goldwater in '64, more or less. He challenged Nixon for the nomination in '68, and Nixon was sufficiently threatened that he groveled before Strom Thurmond to shore him up with the Southern delegates(already lousy with ex-Dixiecrats) and stave off a humiliating floor fight(this being a convention challenge, not a primary challenge, which didn't exist in its current form then). Having read the Rick Perlstein book, it amuses me that Goldwater was a terrible campaigner who didn't really seem to get what people liked about him. One of his surrogates would throw red meat to a crowd and get them all amped up(John Wayne was always pretty explicitly racist, whereas Reagan quickly became adept with the dog-whistle), and then Goldwater would go on stage and drone on about the minutiae of the trade deficit(or some other dreadful watching-paint-dry thing) and put everyone to sleep. ...
