Sports can have an emotional connection to people so when the team does well they get the same feeling as if they were on the team. Thus, many people feel they are part of said team. Think of it as a community "we", which is what it is. Sports teams are a large part of the communities that they play in, and as someone above expressed, their success can have great emotional and financial impacts on everyone around. Since voting is a huge topic now; you vote for a leader in your area, that leader wins election, you can rightfully say "we voted him in" or "we won".
