It's not. It can be used insultingly, yes, but there are guys who make a hobby of tricking other guys into thinking that they're girls. They refer to themselves as traps.

If you use it as a term of derision toward trans women, it's a slur.
If you use it as a term for convincing cross-dressing males, it's a helluva fetish. I mean, not a slur.

i got modded here for referring to my own animal crossing character as a trap, disputed and everything, explained how nobody said anything about trans women, i just posted a screenshot of my character in super girly clothes, "trap" characters are literally created and written to be male, etc. upheld

so yeah, as far as gfaqs is concerned, it's an extremely offensive slur in any context

We live in an age where context no longer matters and the worst possible interpretation is the only correct option to justify being offended at everything.

But yeah, mods will delete it even if it's used to describe a character that isn't trans to begin with.

We went ~10 years describing GG Bridget and the like as traps, not trans.

The word's original use was to refer to (strictly cisgender) anime guys who dress as girls, being an offshoot of the Admiral Akhbar meme. Any use of the term as a transphobic slur didn't happen until later on. If it's going to be treated as a slur in all contexts, then so should fairy.

I've only ever seen it used for a male that's very androgynous or intentionally dresses feminine for the intention of entrapment essentially or femboys. In that case I feel it's fine, personally.

Now I have seen another word that's become obsolete used as derogitory for trans, though some still use it? I don't know, there's so many terms that seem to be in flux and have various meanings. I would say I've not seen it used negatively, but think I know of a way it could be.

I got warned for talking about anime traps. Not someone who identifies as a woman or anything. Literally a male that identifies as male, is straight, and wears usual clothing (read: not those two dudes from Fate and Steins;Gate) and the only thing was they had a pretty face

I don't really care about internet karmies but it was interesting to see the same fallout on r/animemes like a month after that lmao

Edit: Oh and Felix from ReZero when he's wearing casual clothing. Pretty much the only three examples I can think of where it's a guy wearing girly clothing, and I'm pretty sure the anime trap meme isn't restricted to 3 anime shows
