My thought was always they'd basically be
PS5 & XSX: $499
PS5 DE: $449
XSS: $299

But the fact they still haven't announced it must mean they're both concerned about either being undercut by the competition or maybe they're nervous that the price is high and they're saving it until as late as possible so it's not a cloud hanging over their marketing.

At this rate I think prices won't be announced until next month.

I bet Microsoft is going to announce a subsidized SKU with GPU where you get the console for $300 + have to make monthly GPU payments for 1 year.

does anyone even care about halo in 2020 though? kids/teens have no attachment to the franchise, hell even halo infinite's big marketing draw is that it's nostalgic for ppl that grew up playing halo CE.

MS should just market the xbox on hardware, people are going to want to buy the box that will best play warzone or fortnite or whatever the hell normies are playing these days

MCC is selling extremely well on Steam so yeah.

But yeah I think they'll really try to emphasize that Xbox is the best place to play console games too. Funnily enough the biggest way to draw in kids is to make Minecraft a next gen exclusive for Xbox.

The X1X can't play next gen games due to the CPU and SSD.

The XSS can. It will likely also be used for xCloud games since they don't stream in 4k.

The only thing about next gen that matters to me is that developers can finally raise the bar on games they make.

The last 3-4 years of a console gen sucks for everyone because their old hardware holds the entire industry back.

So basically if you buy a X1 now, you get a free upgrade to XSX in 18 months, probably have to renew the 2 year contract as well.

That's honestly a great deal for people who are already paying for GPU ultimate anyway.

Microsoft is in an extremely bad position right now.

They are clearly not ready to launch XSX in November, certainly from a software standpoint and I'd wager from a hardware supply standpoint as well. Halo Infinite was literally the only game that even looked like it was past development planning stages, and even it looked pretty bland.

The only reason Series S exists is to offset how expensive Series X will almost certainly be. To launch a crazy-expensive console with zero games even on the remote horizon during the middle of a huge recession is a horrible idea.

Anyone else think there will be different versions with different price points -- kind of like there is now with the xbox?

I can see them doing this so they can have one for like $999 and another for $499. Put a larger SSD or whatever in the big one and a fancy controller or special edition and people will eat it up.

Just want to point out that launch Xbox 360s were basically unusable by 2013 (no wifi, no HDMI, no HD-DVD/BLU-RAY drive, few TVs supported 1080p over Component Cables, 20 GB HDD that was proprietary despite forced game installs late-gen)

Launch Xbox One consoles don't have HDR and most games look and run worse on them than even the Xbox One S. Proprietary HDD is too small and can't be replaced.

Launch PS3s were arguably the best PS3s you could own, even by 2013
Launch PS4s are basically identical to the PS4 Slim in features (including HDR)

So if we're gonna criticize Sony for making "Pro" consoles, we should point out that at least they didn't release launch consoles that were gimped to the point of being more or less unusable by the end of the generation.

The entire point of the Series S is to be a (relatively) reasonably cost-focused alternative to Series X.

The problem, as pointed out by Digital Foundry, is that Series S gimps Series X in the same way Xbox One gimps the Xbox One X. If everything has to be compatible across the line, development must start with and focus on the lowest common denominator. Games can't be developed to fully utilize the Series X. You're just gonna get higher resolutions, better frame rates, ray tracing, etc. But not any kind of radical generation-spanning difference.

Sony is in a vastly better position to Microsoft right now, and they clearly know it. Microsoft is 2 years away from any meaningful first party exclusive other than Halo Infinite, assuming it doesn't also get delayed next year.

With that said, Sony also made one really critical mistake - that hard drive they're using. It's literally so advanced that Intel chipsets on PC don't even support it yet. It's an absurdly expensive technology that dramatically drives up the manufacturing costs of the PS5. There's a pretty good chance that Sony will price the PS5 the same or even higher than the Series X, despite being pretty significantly less powerful.

It literally doesn't matter because the PS5 is using AMD and it's not "so advanced" at all. Intel just sucks. AMD is releasing 5nm dies this year and Intel hasn't even released 7nm dies.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seventh_generation_of_video_game_consoles

During the 7th gen where the XB360 did well for the first 2/3's of the generation, Sony shot themselves in the foot with PS3.

But by the end, you can tell by Global Console Unit sales #'s.

PS3 got 87.4 million
XB360's got 84 million

Alot of PS3's increase in unit sales was near the end of it's life cycle which is what pushed it slightly over the XB360.

So MS definitely has a chance.

Between Sony & MS, this generation is the most interesting generation I've seen so far.

Both sides are so similar and have a relatively even standing at the moment.

Where did Digital Foundry say that about the Series S? Pretty sure they actually said the opposite. That it would scale fine. It's the Xbox One that's causing issues.

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2020-in-theory-does-a-4tf-next-gen-console-make-sense

However, while the tests here can only really be considered a very rough ballpark approximation of what the real thing may deliver, the basic concept of scalability seems to check out - and with next-gen pricing apparently causing concern, maybe a more value-orientated console is what the market is going to need.
