The infection rate statewidein every regionis below the established threshold and therefore all school districts are permitted to open this fall. Whether your school will be in-person, remote, or a hybrid model, will be determined locally by each individual school district under strict Department of Health guidelines.

Every school district was required to submit a reopening plan to the Department of Health, which will be carefully reviewed. Additionally, school districts must post their remote learning plans, as well as plans for testing and tracing students and staff, on their websites. These plans must be transparent and accessible.

Parents and teachers must feel safe and secure in each school district's plan to return to school, and to that end, school districts are required to engage all parties. Specifically, they must set dates for 3-5 discussion sessions with parents and the community, to be held by August 21, and at least one separate discussion session for teachers specifically.

Based on our infection rate of about one percent, New York State is in the best possible situation right now. If anybody can open schools safely, we can. We can bring the same level of intelligence to the schools reopening that we brought to the economic reopening.

NY State's guidelines for schools opening:
https://www.governor.ny.gov/sites/governor.ny.gov/files/atoms/files/Pre-K_to_Grade_12_Schools_MasterGuidence.pdf

It's also worth noting that like everything else opening up, he will close it right back down if it starts turning south.

Honestly as scary as this is, this is the ideal situation for schools opening in the pandemic. This is why instead Trump screaming schools should open, we should work to get every state into the same position NY is in so if we do open up, we aren't pouring gas on an already hot fire. Will in person school work with the virus? I don't know, but waiting until the virus is under control is the only way to do so smartly.

And hey, Cuomo is a democrat. It's almost like democrats aren't against schools opening, they're against schools opening with the virus spreading like crazy. Manage it a lot better and other states can do the same.

No it's not. Ideal situation is not opening at all and giving students that are otherwise without access to remote learning tools the computers or tablets necessary to do so.

No shit the schools are opening, kids have nearly no chance to die of this, like every other mild illness. Your last "paragraph" is a joke, why pretend like anything a politician does is anything other than political posturing? Do you really believe Trump is the devil and Cuomo is any different? That democrats care for their subjects and republicans don't?

If this was any GOP Gov saying this they'd be criticized. Dont get why because its a Dem saying it they get defended. Schools should remain closed until there is at least a vaccine.

do you really not understand the difference in the gop states opening schools that are currently rapidly getting cases vs new york, which has been at an incredibly low cases per capita number consistently for two months?

So teachers/staff and the adult family members of the students are somehow immune now?

thats some silly ass reasoning. and its annoying when ppl bring up kids being less susceptible means its completely safe. and its some clown as shit that ppl use it as a reason.

fuck that shit bro, this aint some perfect world modelling scenario.

even if they arent affected by it that much yall acting like their parents/guardians/teachers arent adults who are susceptible contracting it from the kids, taking it home, spreading it to their spouses, then those ppl going to work or out in public spreading it further

I live here and have a niece that would be going back, and my sister-in-law is an English teacher for the Fulton school district.
I am nervous, but we've been doing well with the virus for a few months and I believe him when he says he'll reverse course if it goes south.

It'll be a poor education for the kids. Mumbling through masks, barely learning, and getting graded on a curve to ensure people pass.

What is the point in opening schools if you're going to have to shut them down again once the cases start shooting back up due to opening up schools

Gov. Kim Reynolds announced Friday that she would override local school districts and require students to spend at least half of their schooling in classrooms despite the threat to teachers, students an their families from the surge in coronavirus cases in the state.

Virginia and Maryland just passed New York in active cases, and NY has 10 million more people than VA and 13 million more people than MD. By this time tomorrow, it's not out of the question that NY has under 80,000 active cases, they were just at 100,000 not that long ago.

What I'm saying is with things going down and with mental health experts saying kids need school, if there is a state that it makes sense to try to get school to work it's New York. I wouldn't tempt fate though, the first sign of trouble you need to reverse course fast.

that you're gonna get your mother sick when you come home from your fifth attempt at community college and try to kiss her

she's going to die and her body is going to be piled up atop a thousand others in the local ice hockey rink, and you won't get to say goodbye.

The thing is, New York wrote the playbook on how to handle this....as far as we know.
First, though, I must mention The Governor said, it is the parent's decision as to whether their children go back or not.

Having said that. We have successfully opened up restaurants and bars. And so far we haven't had a spike. Additionally, most New Yorks have learned to live with this, it been our reality for the better half of the year. We have taken on the discipline of trying our best to slow this thing down.

~And yes, if things go wrong at the schools or bars they will get shut down real quickly, just as they already were in resent memory.

Having said all of that, this one reason I am glad I don't have children, and never wanted to actually become a teacher. As well, as avoiding a restaurant gig this year.

that seems a bit outrageous, my mother died years ago and I don't think funerals should be banned either. it is again worthless political posturing to ban them and visits to nursing homes, considering they congregated the infected at them anyways

no, no, it's not the funeral that would be disallowed, it's the saying goodbye in the hospital before death by pneumonia-induced oxygen deprivation
