This could be big insofar as proving a model very roughly along these lines is worthy of replacing (or at least accompanying) traditional theater releases in the future... but that pricing added to gating it behind a subscription is completely fucked.

I'm personally of the opinion that the experiential gap between theaters and home theaters is shrinking if not vanishing entirely on a case-by-case and preferential basis, but I feel like the common stance is that watching it "on the big screen" is still a premium experience.

So to charge more than double a typical stub for a "lesser" experience is kind of whack. Only way I'd think to excuse it is if this was a "catch it early" sort of thing, but it may not come out in theaters for these regions at all at this rate.

I assume the price is based on the idea that a lot of people watching it will be families. So for one dude its a bad deal, but for four people its a bunch cheaper than movie tickets would be. (its theoretically also a worse viewing experience than the theater would be though)

that said, I find it hard to get over how awful a deal renting a movie for $30 sounds even if it makes some logical sense. It would have to be something I really care about before Id do that instead of waiting. I might be willing to pay $30 for Fast and Furious 9.

But for a family of 4 at the theater not including concessions would be close to $50.

I wonder by how much this will shatter the record for most pirated piece of media.

But yeah this is clearly aimed at families who'd be spending $50+ to see it in the theater anyway. It's not for my partner and me who'd only be paying like $16 to see it in a matinee showing with no popcorn or drinks.

You guys raise a fine point with the families thing - my selfish brain hadn't considered that. At any rate, I'll be very interested to see the numbers that come out of this. I remember when theaters were absolutely freaking the fuck out when Trolls 2 did so well on streaming that they were threatening boycotts over the mere idea that streaming was a viable release platform. The writing is (and has been) plainly on the wall for them, but it's been wild seeing how COVID has catalyzed things.

The family argument is silly. How much does it cost to buy a DVD or Blu Ray for a family to watch together? This price is insulting.

$25-$30.

And thats after they have possibly already paid $50+ to see it in theaters. Once.

I mean considering that a Disney Plus account can have seven users on it, it's a bit of tricky decision to make if you're on the business side of things trying to calculate how much money you could lose on whatever price point you choose. There's no way this is going to equal "$30 per viewer" in any way, shape or form, and that's not even getting into piracy.

That said I don't really believe "Mulan" looks like it's worth paying any amount of money for.

This argument fails on a few levels

  1. A brand new Blu Ray is typically $25-30 to begin with unless it's on sale.
  2. Why would you compare it to the price of a Blu Ray instead of the theater costs, anyway? The average person isn't buying a brand new Blu Ray for their very first viewing of a movie if they can help it.

Because it's the premium for not having to wait. And just like there are perks to a theater, there are also perks to being at home. Comfier seating, not having to put up with lines or a bunch of other people, being able to pause, and so on. The reason movies are cheaper when they end up on demand later on isn't completely because it's at home vs. a theater, it's because you've had to wait longer to see it and they're also trying to rope people into watching it again.

$30 is a little much, but it's not outrageous.

For one person, it's steep, sure, but discounting families seems silly.

What I dislike about it is the cost you pay the theater, even if it were the same, goes into the hands of a lot more people/businesses. This way, even if you happen to pay the same, you are basically paying it straight to Disney and no one else. That's why this is a bit of a rip off, because they don't have to charge you that much at all.

Should have been $20 for D+ users and $30 for non. You limit your market so drastically not giving non-users an option and coulda made D+ users feel special and more likely to get it.

While I think this will hurt theaters overall, I think it might be positive for theatergoers that take their movies seriously.

Not only should it open up room for more niche films, but kids running around is one of the worst things about seeing movies.

But you can save your $30 and just watch the original on Disney+ which will probably be better!
