Beds are generally cheap, it's the mattress that kills you. As for mattress pricing, there's so much obfuscation in the industry that it's hard to determine what a fair price might actually be. Plus all of the really good mattresses tend to be over $1200 (and the lowest-end Tempurs I think are like $2800).

And then there's the matter of quality. Something like a Tempur will hold up 20+ years (in fact, I think they used to warranty them out 20 years). You could possibly go through 3-4 $300 beds in that same time... although, honestly, peoples' beds often have to be almost falling apart before they replace them unless they're moving and starting things on a clean slate rather than transporting their furniture.

Oh, and then you have the adjustable bases (which you could use in lieu of a tradition bed frame and obviously removes any need for a box spring) which can run you probably $500 or $600 for a cheap one but also can get up to the thousands.

Things that tend to last tend to be expensive. I think it's understandable, if frustrating.

I bought a $3000 dollar bed in 2005 or 2006. I still use it.

I bought my current mattress off Amazon for $100 a year ago. It came in the mail, you unrolled it and it expanded into a full sized and comfortable queen mattress (first time in 20 years I didn't have a king sized one, all my sheets are too big).

My wife was a princess, so I bought very expensive king sized mattresses in the past, up until she was in a hospital bed (and I just used the king myself). This mattress has been just as comfortable and WAY cheaper, easier to get etc.

So yeah, mattresses are too expensive because you can get just as comfortable ones WAY cheaper online.

Here is the mattress I got. It was actually cheaper back then, and I got it as the deal of the day for $129 total.

Great freaking mattress.

With a lot of other furniture, it's not too hard to find quality (or at least make sure it's quality) at a lower price because used furniture is a thing. It's a lot harder with mattresses.

Your average bed-in-a-box isn't going to last you all that long. You'd be lucky to get 3-4 good years out of it. Even a cheaper knock-off like a Bob-o-pedic, which is several steps above a bed-in-a-box, often won't get you 5 good years. I think my brother's went to crap in under 3 years.

It's not that you can't find mattresses for $300 or less, it's more that they won't be great mattresses.

And, as a general side-note, my cousin -- who this year might clear $100k at a job where his salary should have been about $50k -- has an inflatable mattress he keeps with him because he every 30 days or so he checks into a new AirBnB and he doesn't like the mattress. (As for why he just hops between AirBnBs, the guy is cheap as fuck -- he lives on under $600/month, so he could easily live on minimum wage while still saving if he wanted.)

I'm familiar with the mattress, it's a low-end foam mattress that generally doesn't hold up.

It really isn't that bad when you figure how long and how many hours you use it.

I think we paid somewhere around $2k for our bed (amish made) and something like $1500 for the mattress (Serta Hybrid mattress). The bed itself will likely last us the rest of our lives (going on 12 years now) and the mattress will probably last 8-10 years or so (just got a new one last month - other mattress we bought with the bed but it was long overdue to be replaced).

$3.5k for 8 hours a day, 365 days a year, about 10 years we figure about $1 per day or 12.5 cents per hour of use. (Really, it is much cheaper now because the bed is already paid off and will probably last another 20+ years)

The more pricy ones even don't last us past 5 years, and we're lucky to get that out of them.

My spouse has also managed to break part of the underside of every single frame we've had. Even the metal one. I'm surprised I haven't been broken in half.....

I bought a Stearns and Foster about 10 years ago for about 2k. It was marked down from the original 4k price tag. I have to say it's the best mattress I've ever slept in. It was extra firm and still just as firm as the day I bought it. With cheaper mattresses, they'll sink over time and eventually you'll be feeling the coils underneath you. For something you spend one-third of your life in, it's worth to put in the extra money.

It's not about how much value you get out of it, it's about how much it took them to make it. Furniture is all relatively similar so the businesses should be competing on the margins but they aren't.

They're a very large up-front cost in many cases, but as people are pointing out, you get a lot out of that price and it's not a price you have to pay very often. To that end, I wouldn't necessarily say they're too expensive, though they can definitely be prohibitively so.

A great night's sleep on a comfortable bed also improves other aspects of your life, such as your mood and health.

So it affects more than just the time you sleep on it.

I have a purple mattress and Im EXTREMELY happy. My only regret is holding off two years on getting it. They boast about staying cool but thats not why I purchased it. But once I got it I saw that it really DOES stay cool all night, and that is amazing. And my back doesnt hurt when I sleep anymore!
