What is Game of the Month Club?
Game of the Month is a community project open to all B8ers where users share, discover, play and/or discuss a select few games every month. The games featured each month are chosen by YOU the users (and Lady Luck)

The Basics
- Each month will usually feature three games that were chosen via a random drawing from a pool of games that users nominated
- For each game you beat, you get a cool point on our just-for-fun standings as well as a nomination for next month's randomized drawing
- In order to receive the point and nomination, you must beat said game within the calendar month
- If you beat one of the current month's games in the previous month, you can apply for a "recently beaten waiver," but you will only receive a point and no nomination should you do so
- Drawing for next month's games is usually around a week before the end of the month
- If you periodically keep us posted on your progress and/or talk about different aspects of the games, then everyone will think you are super awesome!

Nomination Rules
- You get one nomination automatically each month
- You receive additional nominations each month for every selected game that you beat
- Each game you nominate has to be unique from all other nominations and cannot include a game that has already been selected for GotM
- Each game must be a standalone game that can be acquired and played on its own (aka cannot be DLC/expansion that requires the base game)
- Nominations only carry over if you beat a selected game after the drawing for next month's games but before the end of the month

MMX, the project's creator, has a birthday in September, so it's that time of year again to decide on which game we will be doing for his birthday.

Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World (Wii/PS3)

vs

Tales of Xillia 2 (PS3)

Neither of these games should need introductions.

Just vote for which one you would like to be featured in September, and you are free to change or rescind your vote at any time.

A little backstory to my pick, Tales of Xillia was a previous game of the month choice ages ago. (sadly I beat it one day late x_x). So I figured in case this doesnt go into 2021 that I pick a Tales sequel to close us out?

Vote for Xillia 2 because eh wouldn't hurt to try to get the platinum.

Going to try to finish up Yooka Laylee this month because I've actually been meaning to. Unfortunately it kind of seems like I might have to do another playthrough for the platinum due to a glitch ha ha.

So I began CTR Nitro, and I already regret my first decision. I knew going in that there was not a friendly way of unlocking content, but I was surprised at the extent of it. Anyway, I saw that there were character skins that I was interested in that required me to basically get all the relics and CTR coins and other stuff. I saw that the only way that I could change characters during adventure mode was to play the Nitro rule set, which locks you into a single difficulty.

I consider myself to be great at racing games (I would hope so given they are my favorite genre), but I know that kart racers in particular have a poor history at incorporating fair elements in terms of difficulty. Coupled with the aforementioned unlock requirements, I decided to try easy, and my god is easy a total pushover.

I am almost done with the second area, and I think there was one race where I was not in first outside of the opening seconds of the race, and I am pretty sure it was because I was going out of my way for a CTR letter. All but one or two of the relic races have resulted in me finishing at least 10 seconds under the time limit.

Luckily, the game isn't long enough to where I can easily start a hard playthrough later on, or now even, but I think that I am just going to commit to this easy playthrough.

I will say that I am not good at touching these golden eggs. Like I haven't been able to reach any of them.

I actually appreciate these.

I vote Tales of Symphonia, I guess - though both are sequels to games I've never played so not sure if I'll get to them or not.

ViolentAbacus has beaten A Short Hike

Was a really fun game, I loved it. Played it for probably two hours, tried to do everything I saw - and just explored for a while. Loved the music and the general pace. Was great to relax to.

I pray that I never have to touch Yooka-Laylee ever again, so not gonna play through that one. May play Crash, not sure. I tried it once and didn't care much for it.

anyway

I nominate:

Duke Nukem 3D

I do, too. I've been way too lazy about playing games lately, but there have been some games that I've loved that I probably never would have played if not for this topic series. Even if turnout is low, I still really appreciate it being here.

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled beated

I did a quick hard mode playthrough this morning. The last time I played this game was months ago when I did the Velo Time Trials so I really wasn't used to items being a factor which caused some trouble for me. I mostly had trouble with Blizzard Buff because I'm already inconsistent when it comes to the lake shortcut and the fence jump, and being pummelled by items added to that trouble.

I spent a ton of time racing online today in CTR. I never won a race nor did I come in last. Most of the races were on courses that I have never played, so routinely finishing in 3rd or 4th seems pretty good.

In Adventure Mode, I am in the fourth world pretty early on. I fully complete a world before moving onto the next, so I probably won't beat the game for another day or two.

Metal has beaten A Short Hike.

I was feeling unusually anxious earlier this evening, so I felt I ought to do something to calm myself, which wound up being this game. It was only sort of working at first, and then I started getting more and more invested in the game and its general feel. By the end of my three-hour session, it had turned into an experience I'd honestly call special, and one that I hope to remember forever. In fact, I might return to it later this month, especially since I missed at least a few things.

As a side note, I don't think it's a coincidence that the games I've been sparking to over the past couple years have all had enjoyable traversal.

For now, nominate The Stanley Parable.

I forgot to mention this but I did end up going back and wrapping up the remaining gem cups and relic races so I could take down the final boss one last time. I have been going back to it daily to try out courses, crystal challenges, and battle modes not offered in adventure mode. However, the main reason is because I can only unlock stuff from the Pit Stop, and I have to come back every day in hopes that the characters I want will be available.

I have already purchased Spyro, Hasty, Yaya, Isabella, and Ami.

I still hope to purchase Hunter, Rilla Roo, Koala Kong, N. Brio, Ebenezer Von Clutch, Pasadena O'Possum, Liz, Megumi, and Tawna. I have nearly enough to purchase all of them after racking up a bunch of coins playing online on Sunday.

I now have Ebenezer, Pasadena, Liz, and Tawna. I have been playing CTR every day, so the others should show up eventually right!?

More importantly, I got my first race win online, and it was on a course that I had never played before (Gingerbread Joyride). We only played it because I changed my vote at the last second from Tiger Temple to this. Usually, I am grouped up with people who are experts at this game, but I apparently got people at or below my skill level because I raced it out in front with a boost start and never looked back. It probably helped that we had two AI racers.

I started Yooka-Laylee a day or two ago. It does scratch that Banjo-Kazooie itch. After liking Tribalstack Tropics due to it being nearly perfectly sized like a BK world, I have been disappointed with Glitterglaze Glacier as they took the Banjo-Tooie/DK 64 route of having it be way too big. It unsurprisingly doesn't have the charm of the Banjo games, but I am enjoying the game thus far. I am also not a fan of the Jinjo replacements in this game.

I actually won two races yesterday. The first was on Polar Pass. I was clustered in the middle at the beginning of the race when I got a green bubble shield. Almost immediately after, someone at the rear used their warp orb and took everyone out but me. I ultimately never relinquished the lead, but I almost blew it at the end. Someone was playing as Ripper Roo and was ever so slightly catching up as the game went on. Near the end of the race, I ended up hitting one of the two seals before that wall barrier jump shortcut, which of course hurt me in multiple ways. On the final crevice jump at the end, the person playing Ripper went for broke by trying to jump as far to the left on the final stretch as they could only to miss. They ended up finishing in third as a result.

The second was on N. Gin's lab. There were about four or five of us jockeying for those top spots for the first two laps. On the third lap though, someone playing as Isabella and myself were starting to create some distance. Then, I hit a few stationary items on the ground and assumed that I was done. However, as I was leaving the area with the rolling barrel, I see the Isabella player being brought back to the track after falling off somewhere. I sped past her, laid down a beaker right in her path (which she hit), and I cruised to victory.

I have three wins as Spyro and 0-whatever as everyone else.

I last played Yooka on Saturday, but I am up to 42 pagies now. I talked earlier about being disappointed with Glitterglaze Glacier, but it redeemed itself with the Icymetric Palace. That is easily the most fun that I've had in the game.

Regarding this thing and to not bump up last month's to do so...

KCF0107 posted...
There are so many games that we have yet to do and will never be featured that I feel like doing previous games would be a waste. More importantly, I don't really see what the point would be in allowing that.

Not everyone in these topics has time every month, or the capabilities to get the games in those months. I know of a few games that passed by and either I didn't have the time or the game at the time (this month included with how I'd want to play Yooka-Laylee but definitely don't have the ability to get it right now). Sometimes people don't get to beat a game they'd want to due to having too many of the games in a month. There's a lot of reasons someone just didn't get to beat something the time that it showed up.

That said, it should never be in place of our three monthly stuff. Maybe at best it could be a birthday extra sort of moment (and one can only GotM back grab if they didn't get to beat it themselves, that way we don't get those 'hey I wanna recommend more people play SMB3' sort of things to make it appear 50 times like MMX joked about) or apply to one month a year as sort of a "retro" month. That's my idea with at least making sure it's not a wasted slot, at least.

And in addition, only one game applies to this, sometimes people nominate games that are coming out in that upcoming month, and we have obviously Suikoden having that remake done. That has a chance of getting a lot more players when it's one of our games with only two people that completed it due to lack of ownership. Allowing something to gain a re-nomination through a 4th game it would allow more players to complete it for here, not just on their own.

Sometimes I'm just someone that likes an excuse to play some games or even replay some.

Off the subject, I guess I should put my Assassin's Creed 2 nomination on the board, instead of skipping out on nominating again.

I am up to 83 Pagies in Yooka now. I have absolutely no idea where the boss in the casino is, so I may just go ahead and go to the next world. Moodymaze Marsh and Capital Cashino are a major step up from the previous two, so I'm glad that the game has been getting better the further that I've progressed. This seems like a game that I would love to fully complete, but I cannot stand the minecart segments. Those are set up poorly, and I just cannot get a handle on the finicky controls for them.

I finally got N. Brio, Koala Kong, and Megumi to show up in the shop, so I have everyone that I want now. I have like 15 more in the shop, so I might continue playing it online on the weekends and try to purchase everyone left as well as grab some paint jobs or costumes that I like. I also won my fourth race today. We were on Nina's Nightmare, and I did not race well at all. I had just come from playing Mario Kart 8, and my cornering was just way off. I was stunned that I won and by seven seconds.

I am up to 116 Pagies in Yooka. I entered Galleon Galaxy, found a ghost, and purchased the final move from Trowzer, but I didn't do anything else there. I looked at the totals page and saw that I had completed Hivory Tower and just need to the two minecart Pagies from Capital Cashino, so I decided to revisit the other three worlds for their non-minecart pagies, quills, ghosts, and extension items. Thank the heavens and the hunter tonic that I didn't need a guide to find the measly few quills that I missed in them. I did use a guide to get one Pagie in Glittermaze Glacer as I found out the hard way that the "hats" I collected for the snowmen disappear when you leave the world, so I just used a guide so I wouldn't waste so much time on it..

Looking at the totals page, this Galaxy world should be the final one, so I'm intending on doing everything aside from minecart segments before tackling the final boss.

KCF has beaten Yooka-Laylee

I finished with 140 Pagies (just need five minecart-related ones) and all other collectibles aside from a tonic I believe. My playtime was almost exactly 20 hours.

It started off pretty good but got better as the game went along. The hub world was pretty disappointing, but the individual worlds made up for it. I wish that they weren't so faithful to the 90s/early 00s era Rare games and adopted some quality of life changes, but maybe that's part of the nostalgic appeal. I plan to return one day and try to tackle the minecart stuff.

I'm glad I did too because I really enjoyed it up until the final boss which imo was hot garbage and I'm not sure if I would have wanted to keep playing. I definitely thought it was better than Banjo Kazooie but I was never a big fan of BK anyway. The voice acting was kind of annoying and the Buddy Flight controls sucked, but other that I thought it was very enjoyable

You win KCF, I enjoyed a walking sim

A Short Hike beaten

I thought this might be decent but I really enjoyed the harvest moon like mundane-ness that this game brings. In rpgs my favorite parts are when the game hits the brakes hard and goes into a section thats not pure action but more world building. This did a very nice job of that, I didn't do everything but I did everything I came across. I'll prolly save the do everything if the ps4 version gets a plat in a few months.

Nominate Mega Man X3

Cody has taken A Short Hike

That was enjoyable. Once you get some feathers it really opens up, it was fun to just romp all over the place. I liked the writing too. Beachstickball and its very lax rules made me laugh, totally reminded me of dumb games my friend and I would invent when we were younger. The surprise co-op and arguing if the serve counted was great.

Nominate Hades
