Is she a stray or feral? Sounds like she was someone's pet before, so a stray?

Because it's recommended feral cats should not be adopted. Instead TNR (trap, neuter and release) is the most humane option.

We end up doing nothing. She's too scared. I didn't expect this reaction lol.

She was so friendly with me, at least in her turf

I took her home, vet ask to visit again in 3 days

She's stray but not feral i think.

In her turf she let pet her, touch her paws even being lifted for a brief moment.

I guess takin out from her turf was a shock

Idk if this helps, but Cats can be trained the exact same way as Dogs. Get some treats and lure her out. Give her a treat anytime she does something good, and she'll start doing it more. You can use this trick to get her to stay calm in at the Vet if you work on it for the 3 days.

General advice for adopting a new cat and/or relocating a cat:

Put cat in a small room, with the door closed

This allows the cat to familiarise itself, on its own time, with its immediate surroundings. You are aiming to make this feel like a 'safe space' so the cat has somewhere to go/hide if it gets spooked. Once it has a 'safe space', it is more likely to adventure out and gain confidence.

Keep the room supplied

Litter tray, wet and dry food (cats are fussy, see which one they prefer), somewhere DARK/covered (blanket over a chair, an old box, just anything it can hide under/in). This just helps fortify the safe space thing. Don't try to interact with the cat when restocking the room - remember, you want the cat to feel like it owns the room. The dark/hidden spot is so the cat can 100% hide if it wants to, especially when you restock.

Get it used to your voice

This is usually done by just you having constant conversation with someone in the house. If you live alone, you might want to try talking to yourself a lot. It sounds dumb but cats HATE new noises/voices/etc. It took my cats (that I've had for years) about two weeks to get used to our new house, from the floorboards creaking alone. The idea here is that you want the cat to get used to your voice, so it isn't a surprise and it knows hearing you is safe. Ditto for any ambient noises your house has, loud footsteps from neighbours, cars, etc.

Never force the cat out

Once it's in the room, ideally you want to just leave it alone. Don't keep trying to get it used to your presence until it's used to the environment/your voice. This can take days. Yes, you sometimes need to grab at it and shove it in a carrier to relocate it or take it to the vet, that can't be avoided. Just minimise your contact till it settles.

Slowly introduce yourself

Maybe once it's been a few days, start leaving the door ajar so the cat may come and go freely from the room. It'll return to that room when it gets spooked (if the safe space has anchored). The cat may spot you, come to see you, just lay somewhere visible, etc... Get low to the ground (squat basically), put your hand out (from a few metres away), and call the cat over. If it comes over, let it sniff your hand a lot first - never try and pet it too quickly. It'll usually let you know if you can pet it (rub against your hand, get closer to your actual body, etc.). If it doesn't sniff you, or does then moves away, just talk to it (again, reinforce your voice) and let it be.
thank you!

mattymad posted...
Oh, in the room, put something of yours that is worn a lot. A hoody/jacket maybe, a blanket/throw from your sofa, etc. It'll associate the smell in the safe room with you.

Talk to her say you are sorry, and pet her so she knows you werent trying to hurt/scare her. She may not understand your words, but will pick up on your body language.

As for the vet it is a place filled with the smells of other dangerous animals like dogs, and strange cats, and being a wildish cat they dont like unfamiliar smells especially smells of other animals in fear. Your house probably has the smell of her baby so she knows it is ok.

She could also have abandonment issues.

I got a goblin investation!!!

Yeah anyway i tried jackson galaxy's method to basically create a hiding place for her that i can control instead of under the table which is honestly dirty. She was covered in cobwebs the first time.

  1. Block the under. I covered the undersides with cardboard/any scrap materials
  2. Still provide a place for her to hide, but in a safer, more visible places. That cardboard cave should be 10x more comfortable since it has bed and lined with my old clothes. I put the toothbrush inside too so it has her scent.
Thanks, jackson!

ay, congrats.

by improving her quality of life, you could have added 10 or more years to her expected lifespan.

iirc, indoor cats can live up to be 15 or older, while outdoor cats usually live up to five years.

Thank you! We got freaked out, the doctor last night was talking about an abnormally large heart and unusual lung sounds. They had radiology examine the x-rays this morning and her heart is fine, but she does have a few lightly fractured ribs. They got her on a few different medications, including one for lung worm which freaked me out but looking it up it seems like it's actually not too dangerous if treated right away and healthy cats can pass an infection relatively quickly. Ugh.

Yeez fractured ribs sounds very painful. Good luck man. Taking care of sick kitten is hard work, and to be honest i was plagued with anxiety almost everytime thinking he wouldn't make it.

It would feel so good to get him into good health again tho. Compared to the kitten Rivel is very low maintenance. I just need to replace food, clean litter and give head pats and chin rubs.

A researcher once played a recording of an elephant who had died. The sound was coming from a speaker hidden in a thicket. The family went wild calling, looking all around. The dead elephants daughter called for days afterward. The researchers never again did such a thing.

Yeah don't do that.

Went back from the vet. She finally got her basic flea/worm treatment. Not vaccinated yet because vet said she's still a bit stressed, and just come back in 2 weeks when she's more relaxed.

Basic checkup comes up fine. No signs of infection, eyes, mouth, teeth, ears are fine. There is a trace of worms in stool test, and she already got worm medicone.

@apolloooo Thank you for thinking about her.

So, we had taken her in Friday night, she was in the oxygen cage throughout yesterday, and this morning they took her out of the oxygen cage to see how she did. The doctor called this evening and said she was fine when she was sleeping, still had an elevated respiratory rate when she was awake but said that she felt comfortable releasing her. Just to play it safe we decided to keep her there one more night just in case something does flare up - we figured we already paid for two nights (and those were the most expensive because of the oxygen), and we'd rather let her relax one more day in a monitored environment just to be on the safe side. Especially since she had that upper respiratory infection last week and recovered really quickly from that before this happened -_-.

The one doctor said the rib fractures were from before we ever adopted her and are healing up nicely so that's also good.

She is a trooper though. Maybe it's because she spent so much time with vets/the shelter before we adopted her but she doesn't stress about anything. The vet was even talking about how she was just sleeping peacefully with all these dogs barking around her and she didn't care lol. Can't wait to cuddle with her again.

I really hope Rivel is doing well. Looks like she had traces of worms but those deworming medications are hella effective.

She is incredible. Any time we have to take our older cats to the vet, they see that carrier come out and they blast to a closet or under the bed. With her you just put her in and she goes for the ride, she's a pro at it.

Also cats are just beautiful little creatures. We jokingly named her Desert Wetpaw (we gave our cats full names based on their personalities though only my wife and I ever call them that sometimes) because she was standing in her water dish when we saw her at PetSmart the first time, and she was meowing and grabbing my finger. When we brought her home from the shelter the first thing she did at the water dish was dip her front paw in it, and she does it almost every time she drinks water. It's too cute.
